Sheffield Wednesday play Middlesbrough on Wednesday so it makes sense to delay any announcement until after that game as plenty of others have said.
Middlesbrough have a slim chance of being caught by us and Luton. If Wednesday management and players knew they were guaranteed relegation already the game could legimately called a fix and the EFL would be to blame so they will no risk that, correctly in my opinion.
Middlesborough can not get relegated as 3 teams can not get more than 49 points.
Yes they can - If Wigan and Sheffield Wednesday dont get points deductions then Charlton and Luton are both on 48-pts with the latter in 22nd place
As a result if Charlton / Luton win and no penalties get dished out then either Middlesbrough or Birmingham will go down (at present it would be Birmingham as they've got the worst GD of the two)
Its something you cant rule out with the EFL keeping radio silence
Any points deduction will be applied next season as a “compromise” IMO.
A proper "compromise" will be points deducted this season, so that they get relegated, and points deducted next season to put them on the back foot in Division Three before a ball has been kicked.

But Wigan are going to have 12 points deducted. The EFL have said so (so no radio silence there) & it's in their rules. It's not something you can really appeal & the EFL have already said that an appeal wont be successful.
The sad thing is Wednesday night should be a fantastic evening of football with loads still to be decided, the "final" league table will be out just before 10pm but due to the clowns at the EFL we'll still have no clear idea who is to be relegated, what an absolute farce they are making of the competition.
Having just read the most recent posts on their fans site, it's interesting to see that they seem as clueless about what is likely to happen and are speculating in the exact same way that we are. Some seem convinced that the delayed decision is linked to a joint announcement being made involving them and Derby. Many others believe that the delayed decision will result in any points deduction being deferred until next season - which means they escape relegation this year.
The more I think about our own precarious state going into Wednesday's final game, the more I think we are going to need Sheff Weds to be dragged down into the bottom 3 for us to escape. I am convinced that Luton will go above us one way or another. I also think Wigan are capable of beating Fulham if Fulham have to go out for a win to give themselves a chance of automatic promotion and also bypassing us out of the bottom 3. Can't see Barnsley beating Brentford though. That leaves us 3rd from bottom (above Hull and Barnsley) and in desperate need of Sheff Weds getting a 12 point deduction - noting they have one of the easiest games of the season against Middlesbrough to come.
Let's get a point at Leeds and escape the drop without the need for Sheff Weds to be involved in our survival plot.
I totally agree. We need to ignore everything and do what we need to do to be safe based on what is the position now.
That said, I will still be angry that an honest club in and around us will be relegated whilst clubs that consistently cheat are allowed to stay in the league. It is just wrong and leaves a very nasty taste in the mouth.
At least two Championship clubs are set to face an agonising wait over whether they will drop into League One even if they finish in the relegation zone because of outstanding disciplinary cases regarding Wigan, Sheffield Wednesday and Derby. The fate of several clubs hinges on the outcome of three independent hearings, none of which is expected before the final league matches on Wednesday.
Wigan, who are 13th, have appealed against a 12-point deduction for entering administration on the grounds of “force majeure”, which typically relates to exceptional circumstances beyond the control of involved parties. Wigan launched their appeal on 6 July and, under EFL rules, it must be heard within 21 days. They are 10 points clear of the relegation zone and if they beat Fulham and at least one of Charlton and Luton lose, Paul Cook’s side would escape relegation, even if – as expected – the punishment is imposed.
Wednesday, eight points above the bottom three, were charged with misconduct in November regarding the £60m sale of Hillsborough to the owner, Dejphon Chansiri. The charge relates to “how and when” the stadium was sold to Chansiri, and the inclusion of the profits in the 2017-18 accounts. The club has said EFL executives authorised the sale, that the charges are “unlawful” and that it is ready to “vigorously defend” its position.

Derby, 13 points above the relegation zone, were charged by the EFL in January with breaching the financial regulations of the Championship following a review of the sale of Pride Park to the club’s owner, Mel Morris. They too have strenuously denied wrongdoing, and have said they “adhered to the profit and sustainability rules”.
The fate of the trio of clubs rests with independent commissions, which will determine the severity of sanctions in the event of any guilty findings. In guidelines presented to clubs by the EFL in September 2018 the template for breaches of spending regulations was a maximum deduction of 21 points – 12 for the breach, plus a further nine if it was an aggravated offence. Other possible penalties include heavy fines. There is an appeals process.
In March 2019 Birmingham were docked nine points for a breach of the EFL’s profitability and sustainability rules.
The regular season ends on Wednesday but the “transfer of membership”, when the 2019-20 season will be formally concluded by the EFL, will take place after the Championship play-off final on 4 August. The bottom seven teams remain at risk of relegation, including Barnsley. Paul Conway, the Barnsley co-chairman, has made clear the club would consider legal action if they are relegated and the outstanding disciplinary cases are not completed. Last week the Barnsley first-team coach, Adam Murray, bemoaned clubs being kept in the dark. “To be where we are in the season and not know the black and white of the situation is strange, to put it nicely,” he said.
Wigan’s administrators have sanctioned the sales of the teenagers Jensen Weir and Alfie Devine to Brighton and Tottenham respectively to help cover wages, having made 75 support staff redundant. Weir, an 18-year-old midfielder who became the club’s youngest-ever player, will reunite with his father, David, who is on Brighton’s coaching staff, while the 15-year-old midfielder Devine was regarded as one of Wigan’s most exciting prospects. The 18-year-old Joe Gelhardt could also depart, with Leeds among his suitors.
I feel sorry for Wigan having to sell their best teenage prospects for relatively peanuts, compared to what they could easily be a worth in a couple of years time.
But then we know all about having our best prospects sold before we've truly reaped the benefit.

That the biggest part of that article for me
Charged in November yet still no decision nearly a year on
The Wigan and Wednesday situations are completely different
Wigan have broken a rule for which there is a specified punishment, and have been found guilty of it
With Wednesday, we don't even know if they've found guilty, never mind what the potential punishment would be.
And then you have Derby, whose case has only just started.
Hearing was thought to be lasting three days. Possibility that the EFL are waiting for the result to be known so that there is some correlation of punishment?
Surely even the heads in the sand EFL can see that if these clubs get away with this, the floodgates could open and there will be carte blanche for clubs to fiddle the books knowing they will get away with it.give the offenders 21 points deduction,it stops overnight.

Give the offenders a 21-point deduction in total.
If it only takes 9 points to relegate the offender then that's all they get in that season and the remaining 12 points are carried over to the following campaign.
If the 21 points don't relegate the club ... demote the cheating sods anyway!
It’s ridiculous that at least two teams in the bottom three may have to wait until 4th August to know what division they will be in next season. What a crock of shit.

Or not. It may be the case that by committing the crime first, Wednesday get away with it as the EFL are lenient because they don’t have the guts to follow through with any sort of real punishment, but the next club have been warned and they get slammed silly

They've already set a precedent by deducting Birmingham 9 points last season - and they admitted their guilt.
Wednesday are denying they've done anything wrong and have continued to flout FFP numbers.

How on earth are teams supposed to be preparing for next season with that in the air ?

Exactly. I feel sorry for them as they've been shafted by their owners..............and then realise the same could happen to us in a few weeks.
I see LB has now stuck his two penneth on reading the Evening Standard about why he and other Managers should know before the games on Wednesday who is getting a points deduction or a tummy tickle!
To now read that we may not hear anything until August is truly shocking...
We the fans have spent money for months watching our teams to end a season at a certain point with the knowledge that when the final whistle goes on Wednesday that we either celebrate or cry our eyes out....
BUT no... The EFL and their little panels say in effect... 'You fans can all fuck off because we're still playing Gods over here and we're decide when it's over!
How is that allowed?? I really do wonder what is the point of supporting any team when actually the Game is rigged and a normal season is just a thing of fantasy!
I apologise my my language but I am way passed golly gosh!
Does anyone have a telephone number for the EFL..? Might be worth everyone phoning them up tomorrow asking when the fuck is this all going to be sorted out.
Any points deduction that is given to Sheffield Wednesday surely has to be enough to get them relegated. Otherwise what’s the point. Anything less is no punishment at all. I’m not saying they will or won’t be given a points deduction just that it’s a pointless exercise if they aren’t relegated. I actually think a very hefty fine and no points deduction is most likely.

A total deduction of 21 points will suit me.
