People are weird (I don't mean on here, in the general footballing world) about having two left footed centre halves. If you look at the history of teams, ours and those all over the world it's really common to have two right footed centre halves, and no-one cares. Vidic and Ferdinand, Terry and Carvalho, Toure and Campbell, Hummel and Boateng, Puyol and Pique. All right footers. Bowyer very specifically likes to have a right and left footer at the back, and there tends to be much more of a fear of having two lefties across football. It's strange
Sure Bowyer had a dose of this with Sarr and Pearce when Bauer was injured midway through 18/19 season - we was pretty dreadful so can see why he’s not keen on it
In my opinion, it was because both Sarr and Pearce were almost completely only able to play on the left side of defence. Pearce at RCB gave away a lot of fouls.

Agree with the two right footers thing.

but i would suggest that the game is different with the level of pressing increasing significantly in the last 5 years.

The ability to naturally distribute on the left and the right and not get caught in possession when playing out from the back maybe where this new "voodoo" comes from.

Currently I can see us lining up like this in our next game if we don't get a striker deal done, but once positions are filled we'll be back to 4-4-2 diamond for sure.

    Amos
    Gunter | Oshilaja | Famewo | Purrington
    Maddison | Watson | F.Caskey | Doughty
    Williams
     Washington

Thats because if you're a leftie, you never play in the right whereas righties will have experience of playing on the left.  On Famewo, he looked very comfortable on his right foot tbf
That makes sense. As right footers are so much more common, they're more used to playing on the "wrong" side, where left footers are less likely to have to play as right CB

Similarly I imagine that right footers playing at LB are far more common than left footers playing at RB

famewo and pearce r first choice now - we need another who is at least as good / ready - barker and oshilaja should be stop gaps this season, nothing more
Pratley really is pretty good for a L1 centre-back

couldn't disagree more - he gets thrown around like a rag doll when he comes up against a proper striker - he's another who shouldn't be a first choice player if we are to go up
Disagree with this, I see him as a starting 11 player. I’m not sure we would have won the Doncaster home play off without him that night, and he was our most consistent player last season (except Dillon).

I would have thought Pearce would be fit, he started training last week, so should be nearly ready

Bowen is one of the most underrated players in my time supporting.

bearing in mind he was 34 when he joined he must have been a cracking player in his Norwich days

Didn't he have a set back in return to training?

Phil Neville was a right footed left back for England...

Struggling to think of left footed right backs

Gunter is a big unit. I wonder if he could play as a 3 at the back? Doughty as left wing back so just the RWB to sort.
Maybe he could in a 3 at the back.

But he's not a specialist CB and that's what we really need.
Could work...  But ruins the rest of the team...

    Amos
    Gunter | Pearce | Famewo
    Lapslie?           |           Doughty
    Gilbey | Watson | Maddsn
    Aneke | Washtn

Unless you want to risk all our defence at once:

    Gunter | Pearce | Famewo
    Oshilaja         Watson    Purrington
    Maddison | Gilbey | Doughty
     Washington

don't ever want to see Washington play up front on his own again - waste of time

I don't disagree, but that formation easily transforms to 3-4-3 with Doughty and Maddison alongside Washington and Gilbey in the CAM position behind.
  • Don’t get people posting these possible teams. We’re likely to be five players better off soon and the team will look completely different.

I just think it's interesting to see how our options change as we move towards the end of the window.

It's obviously only supposition and with 1 full week remaining to get in 4/5 players according to Bowyer I hope it's read as such...

Without any leaks it all has to be guess work.

He was right footed as evidenced by the fact that he took all his penalties with that foot as well as free kicks. He started at right back too but, to be fair, unlike a lot of modern day footballers, you wouldn't know that he wasn't predominantly left footed if you saw him using it.

Paolo Maldini was one of the best left backs of all time and right footed.
  • Chris Solly was one of the worst left backs of all times and he was right footed.

    Not mine. What I expect.

Somehow Bow keeps playing him... Levitt isn't exactly setting the world alight yet either.

TBF Bowen had an effective left foot.

The reason I know he was right footed was his penalty at Wembley.

    Exciting!!!! 16:00 signing incoming.
  • So will it be Koiki (the obvious option), or will it be a total curve ball that nobody has spoken about?
