The thing with going into administration, everybody understands the punishment. Why is it 12 points? Because the league decided that was appropriate. What you need is set standard punishments if a club breaks certain rules and no vagueness. So if Wednesday's punishment is halved, there is still an admission that rules were broken. Not having a clear enough set punishment allows crap like this to happen. It comes down to lawyers and precedents when it should come down to facts.
As golf addick says they probably knew this would happen. If we had stayed up as a result of the 12 points deduction would they have had to subsequently relegate us
So the rule is 12 point deduction as standard. Birmingham got a reduction to 9 for fully cooperating. Sheffield W tried to hide the date of the ground sale which apparently doesn’t breach the ‘good faith’ clause which would be a reason for enhancing the penalty. They now end up with a smaller reduction than Birmingham.
On SSN, 12 point deduction halved by arbitration panel and now move off the bottom of the league. Fucking joke.
Not off the bottom any more, cos Wycombe have just beaten Birmingham 2-1 (thanks to an injury time own goal by a Brum defender according to the Beeb live text), so they're up to 3rd from bottom, and Wednesday are back down there again. How sad.
So we have an organisation that have a set criteria of rules to play by. Everyone signs up for it but when it goes wrong you can complain and an independent panel says the rules.you agreed to are wrong.
Congratulations on your promotion to the Premier League Weds. I really think EFL haven't gone far enough. Perhaps, come end of season if they haven't got enough points to get promoted just bung them a few come end of season.

I believe the maximum is a 21 point penalty. Obviously only for extreme cases like paying for players to have a burger on the way home.
Just wait until a small club in div 2 breaks the rules,21 points deduction, absollute farce, going from bad to worse, agree with previous poster, brown envelopes flying about here.
So basically you can cheat and break the rules and there is little that the EFL can do about it, because of their maladminstrstion of the leagues. A consequence of this is it will reinforce the governments rejection of any financial support for league football. Why would you give money to the corrupt teams in this league while the EFL in capable of adminastrating the leagues.
Am I being cynical to say that the EFL knew back in August that this was likely to happen & that's why they didn't push for the points deduction to be actioned last season. Imagine how it would look now if the EFL turned round & said..."sorry we relegated you for no reason"

Are Sheffield Wednesday cheats? 100% yes.
Wonder how Macclesfield fans feel?
And they are still cheating. One can but hope that SW and Rooney FC go down. Coach my arse.
