Richard Murray said 20 years ago Man utd would leave and join a European super League. Only the advent of the Champions League and home teams not having to share the gate receipts stopped that happening.
It's a power grab by the elite clubs which achieved their aims back in 91 when the Premier League usurped the EFL.
COVID-19 will kill off some clubs with no punters through the door soon, and the timing is to take advantage of that desperation and despair of clubs who may only survive a couple more months without a hand out.
The Premier League just spent £1.26 billion in the transfer window. That includes Liverpool who won the title at a canter last season and no doubt other clubs on players who may be flops and who may not feature at all this season. I think they can afford to give the EFL a few hundred million to maintain the integrity of the pyramid no strings attached.

The fans we represent are fortunate to support clubs that regularly secure the largest financial revenues in the Premier League. But all of us understand that football doesn’t work in isolation. It’s a family. It requires a fair share of resources to ensure that the Premier League is competitive to watch and that the lower leagues flourish as part of our national game.
While the six clubs we support are widely reported to be the instigators of Project Big Picture, it is important we state very clearly that we do not support the proposals in their current form.
The Premier League has rightly said that all stakeholders should be involved in discussions about the future of the game. And yet supporters have not had the courtesy of any communication or consultation about these plans before they were published last Sunday, despite allegedly being three years in the making.
By floating this latest plan, those behind it are acknowledging football needs to be reformed. It’s something we have been saying for many years. There are some suggestions in this plan that have merit. But we are totally opposed to concentrating power in the hands of six billionaire owners and departing from the one club, one vote and collective ethos of the Premier League. This part of the proposal must be dropped immediately if other elements are to be given serious consideration.
We welcome the Government reiterating its plan for a supporter-led review into football governance. This needs to happen as a matter of urgency and supporter groups must be consulted on the terms of reference. These terms must include how fans are to be given a greater say in the running of their clubs and a chance to be involved in ownership structures.
We call on the Government and football authorities to now work urgently to secure a sustainable future for all clubs, many of which face serious threats to their existence as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
We also expect both parties to make a genuine commitment to reform and to listen to our members. Fans are the lifeblood of the game.
We need to be heard as soon as possible.

Saw a very valid point online earlier. Obviously the big 6 are offering this 250m per season bribe to the EFL, but once it goes through and they have complete control, what is to stop them cutting this funding?
They could turn round the following year and say 'sorry EFL it's our money, you're now only getting half that'. There would be absolutely nothing anyone else could do about it.

The charm offensive has been going on all day from Parry, and it would seem the overwhelming majority of EFL clubs are supportive, in most if not in all of the proposals (the veto on new ownership will be a non-runner).
Seems the only strong voice against is the other 14 PL clubs!!

I can’t see the majority of clubs giving up a quarter of their money without some way of recovery it. Maybe the 8 game proposed idea is the way round it. They can tout their games playing the big clubs to the Far East week in and out. I doubt the 25% is the same 25% the EFL think they might get. Even if the lower league teams do get the money it will just be fuel wage inflation just as has at the top table.
