  • That'll do for me.....three points and another clean sheet in atrocious conditions. Amos showing we will not miss Phillips, Inniss immense, Famewo superb, Gunter the type of player any manager would want, Alfie at his best and Pratley proving his doubters wrong by changing the game when he came on.
And I still think things can get even better.
  • I went for a 1-1 draw in the preview because I couldn't see how Charlton could win because they struggle to get more than one shot on target !
    I was right and wrong.
I forgot about the consistent OG and Innes who can leap for England.

    Great win in poor conditions.
Creating more chances will be for another day.

I thought the referee had a very decent game today.

And to think it was his first ever game at this level. Seems to have a promising future, maybe as a top ref?

    Anyway, good luck to him.
Made one silly decision to give a drop ball to us when we were already in a better position in the first half

If he continues to have good games like today then he doesnt stand a chance of rising up the league given the standard of officials higher up
Not sure if it was silly.  I think he stopped the game cos he was concerned about a serious injury so drop ball was the only course of action.  Considering the conditions and the wilyness of L1 players I thought he did pretty well
But then dont the rules state the game should only be stopped for a head injury?

Otherwise I agree, thought he was probably the best official we've had in a long time in any EFL League, Andrew Madley at Wembley is the only one close
  • Playing that midfield 3 was poor selection from Bowyer. Unlike our next opponent Robinson however, he does something about it and made the change he had to. Today didn’t suit Levitt but I’m going to be honest (maybe a little harsh so early) and say he’s going to flop this season. Yep that dont look like to flop are the CBs, great finds.

Smyth didn’t impress me either, I thought Bogle did a good job, with articulately in the second half when I thought he might tire.

All in all a good win against a poor team in a poor game in poor conditions.
  • Not a classic , but a well deserved 3 points in atrocious conditions  . Thought Gunter was excellent  , as was Inniss . Levitt looked lost and Williams disappointed again  .

Interesting, differing opinions on Johnny's performance on the players marks thread.
  • I really do think that this season it is, put simply, a case of the ends justifying the means. The football might be average but if that means us getting out of this division, especially when we probably won't be able to watch a good proportion of the season "live", then so be it.

I certainly do not imagine we'll see a repeat of today in weather conditions that aren't extraordinary

The standard in league 1 is so bad. Worse than i remembered. First half was honestly painful to watch, £10 is a joke for top premier league games let alone dire league 1
Can't think of a better way to spend a tenner on a wet and windy Saturday afternoon.

Watching my team win, away from home, with yet another clean sheet and two goals that had me cheering.

When was the last time we kept four clean sheets on the trot?
Hear hear and all that, but christ c’mon its so bad atm.

Just loved Alfie's old fashioned wing play that brought our 2nd goal.

Credit to Amos for aiming his dropkick right into the path of Doughty - but watch Alfie with the only intent of charging to the goal line, before squaring back into the box ........ all the defenders facing towards their own goal, so difficult to defend.

The hapless defender couldn't do anything but sweep the ball into his own net.
If he'd let it go, there was Williams and Smith running in behind him.

Almost impossible to defend. Well done, Alfie.

Still love that second save from Amos when Inniss heads the ball back to him.

Doesnt try and panic by rushing to kick it away and so miss resulting in 1-0 - Instead watches it the whole way!!
  • 3 wins in a row. 4 clean sheets in a row.

    What's not to like.
For you Golfie the fact that you're well on the way to losing our bet.

Once again your pessimism is being proven unfounded.

  • Terrible first half. Second half we dominated. Don’t remember them having a shot on target in second half .

Watched on the hill outside the ground. Second half pissed it down. Saw both goals.

Bowyer gave up a clap at the end. Promotion bound I think.
Bowyer gave a clap to the fans going to watch against the new regulations.

He really is a true hero.

  • Amos.
Remember now why I liked him so much when he was last a regular. His ability to come for the ball and claim it. It must have been a nightmare in those conditions, but he did not lose concentration and claimed. His distribution is very good, and his throw out to Doughty was a good example. Phillips is a better shot stopper IMO, but the double save in the first half was 1st class, and not for the first time this season.
    Inniss.
Immense. If he has not got a tattoo with ‘they shall not pass’, he should get one. An absolutely fantastic display today.

    This is a huge victory.

If you want to win promotion, you need to go to places like Northampton, where it's scrappy, the weather is poor and the pitch is awful yet still win.

It's results like today which are crucial.

Didn't have to be pretty, we got the job done

I appreciate that but I don't just mean today. We only had one shot on target in our last game and average three shots on target per game for the whole season. Lincoln have had 44 compared to our 21 which is why they have scored 13 as opposed to our 7.

LB is trying to establish a winning formula that is based on a rock solid defence (and I don't just mean THE defence when I say that) and the last thing he wants is us "trading blows" with the opposition. It's a formula that will, hopefully, last the test of the season especially with the cover that we have in most positions. That back up is something that the likes of Lincoln may not have and when the injuries/suspensions kick in they will, hopefully, falter.

It's also the reason I believe that LB isn't totally bothered about not having a 20 goal a season striker because, as good as that would be, a team becomes not just reliant on that player but the opposition know that he is the one that they have to nullify. If and when that player gets injured, as Taylor did for us, the scoring options and that "modus operandi" goes out the window.

I might be totally wrong and LB might set up the side to be more expansive but if that means sacrificing points in the process then it is unlikely, in my opinion, to happen.
  • Very pleased although it seems like we are winning very ugly.
I am elated at where we are at. We cobbled together a team very late in the window, many have no experience playing with each other, our defense is good and... we are not giving up points in the last 10 minutes with lapses like we did all last year.
Given we were a few days away from Administration just a month ago, upper-half of table is great for me. No complaints!

I’d say the title winning season under Lord Chris we won the large majority of our games ugly! Long may it continue! Well worth the money spent on the pass even though the conditions and the game itself were terrible! We press on...
  • Yes, but what did Seth Plum think?

  • If our midfield are all fit .........
Well, they're not going to be for 40+ games this season.

Which is why we have options - and some bloody good ones as well.
