Will we be champions

  • Unless we get a major injury crisis or Paul Elliott miraculous snatches the club back, I’d say it’s between us and Peterborough
Far too early to make such claims.

Let’s see where we are in Jan, and how we are with injuries.

if we are in a position to go for it, it sounds like there could be just enough wriggle room for some more transfers manoeuvres from Thomas that could make the difference
Not making any claims? This is a thread on a football forum. My claims are nothing more than I reckon us and Peterborough have the best squads so it’s ours to lose.

Some of you take this/yourselves very seriously.
  • We will if we have more points than anyone else.   :D
  • I'm not worried at all I firmly believe we will win the league yes there are a few standout teams at the moment but we havent reached anything like our expected level yet. New players still getting used to each other, players yet to get back playing, other teams are performing at their level we are not yet. Luckily like a few others I backed us for promotion early doors and got good odds not a chance I would cask that in at the moment even if offered a decent return

Sometimes the winning way is not solely about the best squads. Of course they massively help and strength in depth is often a luxury in league one. Agree ours is one of the best in the division but we’ll need luck with injuries and luck with matches too. We’re not yet a dominant side and that might come but top two is going to be tough. It’s achievable but I’m thinking our player turnover a few weeks ago will take just too long to burn through in cohesion enough. Playoffs are most likely for me. Anything less than sixth will frankly have been a failure though.

As I said above I agree managing injuries will be a big factor here. I just think this is a terrible league filled with terrible teams. I’d be more than happy with play-offs, but if I was a betting man I’d punt for top 2.

For all the people saying we’ll finish in the play-offs, who are in your top two? I’d love to see your logic there and why that same logic isn’t applied to us, arguably the best squad in the division (by quite some way).

Totally agree, those saying playoffs is the best we can expect, none of them have given who will fill the spots above us, and why they will be there. This is a pretty poor looking league this season, and therefore has two ways it can go. That will be 6 to 8 teams will be in there fighting for the top 6 and ultimately top 2. The other way is one of the 6/8 will get away from everybody and win this comfortably.

We have 6 wins on the trot, some will say against the lesser lights of the division, other than Sunderland, Fleetwood and Donny.  We played our first 4 games with a depleted squad and therefore gave others a potential head start.
we have yet to actually field what I think most would agree is our true first 11.
We have depth in our squad, and not just in numbers, but also in quality. We are not in the position of taking of a Yann Kermogant, to bring on a Simon Church. We genuinely have competition for first team places in virtually all positions.

On top of all this we have an owner with ambition. It would be no surprise to see the squad strengthen even more in January.

So at absolute worst in there battling for the 6, but our depth and quality in depth, in my opinion, is what will make us that bit special. I say we will win this league.
  • The main question mark at this point is goals. If our midfield carry on scoring we've got a great shout at the automatics but if they start firing blanks we could be like Sunderland were a couple of seasons ago and draw too many games 0-0 or 1-1.
  • Those two early defeats may come back to haunt us. The trouble with only one point for a draw is that we can have mediocre patch or a difficult run of games and pick just a handful of points when playing OK. However, I prefer to compare our position with when others were in charge. At that time, League Two or AFC Charlton looked more likely. We will be there or thereabout and that’s more than I ever expected in August.
  • Nah, playoff final v Sunderland
  • Peterborough losing

    11/4 there having a laugh
  • Think it’s easy for fans to sometimes get wrapped up in just how we are playing, and ignore the fact there are other teams in the league who are equally as capable (in this seasons case I reckon Peterborough are still the biggest threat).

We’re gonna have a bad run of form, just depends on how long those bad runs last vs how long the good runs last. Minimise the slumps, extend the winning runs and we’ll have as good a chance as any.

Powell’s 11/12 team had a couple of home losses on the bounce in March/April time. Curbishley’s 99/00 team had a run of one win in six leading up to Christmas.
  • Crewe 2 Peterboro 0.
  • Peterboro have had a poor defence since longer than I can remember and still have.
Peterboro might make the top 6, but they won't make the top 2.
  • We're going up as f@cking champions.

    Peterborough always fall away.
  • Yup, course we will ... this division is easy innit  :D

Sunderland 1/6 to make top 6. We are evens. I know I’m hugely biased but I don’t get it. Not complaining because easy winnings, but just don’t understand the logic.

A lot of Sunderland fans and others have backed them.

It's probably due to weight of money (Sunderland have the divisions largest fanbase and they're naturally going to back their own team). The bookies are just trying to balance their book.
  • Hope so as I got 40/1 during out stupid time just before start of season with no players and didn't have a clue who actually owned us!!
Well good on you ,love to see a punter take the bookies to the cleaners.

But in answer to the question, we are only in November and too many things can go against any side at this moment in time of covid.

We have the right owner and manager in place at this given time and we have the players in defence to cover any mishap on the field. If we can keep our form we have agood chance to finish in top 6.What we dont have is thepower of what other clubs will do.

With no fans in the grounds at the present time goes against us, as The Valley if only half full really does give us the upperhand over the opponents and the wins which we would require to finish top.

Would take Fleetwood to finish over Sunderland in any match bet. I don’t actually think they will even make top 6.

Reading were 7 points clear in The Championship but then had 2 x 3 - 0 losses. I think we have a great choice of finishing in the top 2, but it will depend on how we weather a bad run, how long it lasts and how quickly we bounce back.

I don't want to be over-confident but importantly Bows won't let the players be. I remember various getting over excited when a 'rich sheikh' took us over and I responded with my usual caution
  • If we win our next league game I may just have to start up one of my "countdown to promotion" threads.
When we've been doing well before, someone on here has posted some excellent tables showing the points needed/possible (I think it was based on baseball methodology or something like that, but I'm not sure).  I'm looking forward to seeing some more of those.
