OK, what happens when you have purchased a Valley Pass, redeemed your code ahead of time to make sure it works, then get a message saying "This content is only available in certain countries"?

Working now!
Which country is your VPN going through?
Think they're season ticket holders.
Ah. Tried UK and PL no luck. Going for the streams now. I just know @Big_Bad_World one will be the best :-)

It should be a good stream. The commentary will take a bit of understanding 😂

It wanted me to turn off my adblocker, so I swerved it. This stream is of Sky.
I have been e-mailing the EFL and the club, the EFL claim there is no issue with Valley Pass showing the game in Portugal - see e-mail conversation below. The club are saying the rules prevent them from showing the game in Portugal. I am doing my best to find out who is wrong - I have asked the club to contact Danny at the EFL to clarify.
Me:
Good afternoon, As a Charlton fan in Portugal, I subscribe to their Valley
Pass overseas broadcast package. I understand that live games broadcast by Sky
are not available in countries where there is a broadcast agreement with the
EFL in place. Here in Portugal I understand that is Eleven Sport, but they only
show Championship games. So can I assume our League One game with Accrington,
scheduled for early January will be avialable for me to watch on Valley Pass,
as Eleven Sport will have no intention of showing the match, or any other in
our league at all? Many Thanks.
Them:
Dear Perry,
Thank you for your email, we note
your comments.
Broadcast rights for our competitions
are acquired through Pitch International, who coordinate the sale of rights on
the EFL’s behalf internationally. We would advise that it is ultimately at the
discretion of the rights holder (in this case Eleven Sport) as to what they
schedule and which games they cover live. We would therefore recommend that you
contact them, in this regard.
If the rights to a Charlton match are
purchased by Eleven Sport in Portugal then the match will not be available on
iFollow. There are situations where broadcasters choose not to broadcast the
match live, however this is at the discretion of the broadcaster.
Thank you for contacting the EFL.
Kind Regards
Danny

Hello Danny,
Thank you for your response – you appear to have
misunderstood my question, as you have answered a completely different one to
the one I asked.
I did not ask if Eleven Sport are showing the
Charlton game - I know they will not be – I asked about the position of the TV
rights for League One clubs when Eleven Sport have the rights for Championship
games.
If you don’t know the answer, could you contact
Pitch International and find out? Or at least give me the contact details of
the person there so I can ask?
Regards
Perry

Hello Perry,
Apologies for any confusion with my
first response.
Our overseas broadcast partners i.e.
Eleven Sport will only purchase rights for particular matches and will never
have the rights to all Championship or League One matches. You can view the
international TV picks on our website at: https://www.efl.com/clubs-and-competitions/tv-games/international-games/.
If Eleven Sport have the rights to a
particular Championship match then this will not affect your viewing on Valley Pass
of Charlton’s match. The only matches affected on iFollow (or Club equivalent
service) overseas are the specific matches where the rights have been purchased
overseas.
I hope this provides clarity on the
questions you have asked.
VPN worked great for me although I might as well have watched that shite on Sky.
Hi Mutts, thanks for your DM. Which country did you set your VPN to? Are you abroad or in the UK? Reason I ask that is that if I would switch to your VPN (Express), it's paid for, like mine, and I need to know if Express can bust through BBC IPlayer before I cough up, as this is what I mainly need my VPN for. Thanks!
@Algarveaddick last time this happened I discovered that in CZ some really obscure web based platform was showing the Charlton game as part of a package of footie rights it had paid for. My neighbour, who found it, had never even heard of the platform, but unfortunately, there it was, effectively busting through my potential claim that no Czech broadcaster actually broadcast the game. Might be the same in Portugal. :-(

Right, I read their letter again, and meanwhile checked and established that the two Czech (cable) channels with EFL rights (according to the EFL website) didn't show our game either. Of course they didn't. So you and I believe that letter suggests we should have been able to watch, but we could not. And this is wrong because the EFL say that we are only barred if the rights holder exercises its right to show the game?
So it looks like the EFL are just too lazy and pony to ask their rights holders to notify them of their attentions on a game by game basis, and just slap a blanket ban on all countries where they have flogged some rights. And then use some expensive VPN blocker to enforce it. Is that your understanding. If so, Ill piggy back on to your complaint and give them some grief.
Here is the most crass aspect of this all. Before and during every game we watch on Valley pass we have to endure among other things a leaden and over-long exhortation not to use illegal streams. Last night we were prepared to pay good money to watch (I did pay and wasted my money). And what happened as a result. I was driven to watch it on an illegal stream!!
I am going by this sentence @PragueAddick : The only matches affected on iFollow (or Club equivalent service) overseas are the specific matches where the rights have been purchased overseas.
I have also asked the club to clarify, and to liaise with Danny at the EFL if necessary.
I used to regrettably write the money off. It was £6 then.
Yes I had a problem a year back (after Roland) couple of times it wouldn’t allow with VPN so went through the opposition site and it was ok but not sure if that has changed now due to different rules in place
It was suggested to me by the staff at Charlton Athletic to
contact you in regards to my query. As the governing body who have entered into
contracts for overseas broadcasts, are you aware that in at least one case (see
below) the broadcaster is not exercising its right to broadcast?
For televised matches, I understand that a match is not
shown on Valley Pass in a country that has broadcasting rights, but if these
rights are not exercised (BeinSports in France never show League One matches),
I do not see how allowing access to the Stream on I Follow (Valley Pass) would
be unfair competition.
Whereas it is possible to subscribe to Sky and watch a
particular match in the UK, for example Charlton Athletic v Accrington Stanley,
this is not the case in France. It is quite possible for me to subscribe to
Bein Sports but on the 8th January this would have only given me access to 2 FA
Cup matches and 1 Bundesliga match, not the match in question.
BeinSports do not show EFL League One matches so I do not
understand how showing it on Valley Pass would contravene broadcasting rights.
Upon subscribing to the service it is stated that 'you will gain access to all
league games the club is allowed to stream in your respective region.' Please
explain to me why the game against Accrington would not be allowed in my
respective region if Bein Sports choose not to exercise their broadcasting
rights.

You can view
‘up to’ 46 matches via a seasonal iFollow subscription overseas. Due to certain
rights restrictions, there is a chance you will not (for some Clubs selected
for broadcast by our rights holders) be able to watch all games in the season.
That is because we cannot guarantee every game is available due to the rights
restrictions in place domestically and internationally.
It is out of
the EFL’s control which matches our broadcasters will show live, as sometimes
they will purchase the rights in bulk and may not show certain fixtures,
however this is at the discretion of the broadcaster and whilst we understand
this may be frustrating as a supporter, the rights have been sold and therefore
it cannot be shown on Valley Pass.
If you wish
to raise any issues with the matches shown live on Bein Sports then we would
recommend you contact them directly.

But now my commentary is about 2 seconds ahead of the picture.
There are no words to express how happy you have made me. Well no printable words, anyway...
