I think in an ideal world we would have moved Pearce on and replaced him with a better CB. Sounds harsh on Pearce who has been a good solid servant and always gives his all but I just don’t think he’s good enough anymore. Not completely ruling him out, if he has to play a few between now and the end of the season i hope he improves on his recent form. It’s just not ideal that you have Gunter and probably Pratley who could well be ahead of him.
Also (and especially in January) finding anyone who would take him would be a challenge. He's made several fairly high profile blunders when he's played recently, you'd need to be desperate to think he's going to be improving your defense much.
Yes I agree, don’t think Pearce leaving now was realistic, but it’s what I would have tried to do had I been playing Fifa/Football Manager. Under the salary cap it’s not good business to have him as a 3rd/4th choice CB when you only have one other one fit. Hopefully Famewo is back ASAP as otherwise they defence doesn’t look particularly strong.
  • I said all along yesterday that deadline day would be judged on who we replaced MM and JW with. Sounds more and more like just getting rid of Maddison was good business in itself, and the young lad from Swindon seems like a good replacement for Williams.

Not entirely sold yet on Schwartz, but Stockley and Millar are two very welcome additions. Don't know enough about Smith to comment.

Still think we should have got a CB in, but overall I'd say it was a decent window.
  • Yeah think I’m happy with this transfer window, once again only time on the pitch will tell & of course Bowyers man management skills, gutted it never worked out with Williams who I think still had enough to offer (his time at Cardiff will tell us either way),losing Maddison was in a way abit of a shock, once again feel he had a lot to offer, but if he was a bad influence round the club then we are definitely better off without him,so here we are the next part of our journey continues, let’s hope our players gel & push us towards the finishing line of at least the playoffs,or dare we dream of more...

Cmon u Addicks, 3pts tonight would be lovely thanks
  • I give it a solid 8/10.

External factors, the pandemic, the salary cap, the division we’re in.  All this taken into account we’ve done very good business.

Finer details, looking at only players that were relevant to the first team squad, it’s 6 out 5 in, most of the incomings will be starters whereas the outgoings were mainly squad players, I don’t think this point has been mentioned enough.

Only reason it’s an 8 and not a 9 or 10 is the centre half situation, which I think could of been sorted early jan if they really wanted too.

We've enough to get out of this division just depends now if the players want it enough and we don’t have another injury crisis.
  • Slightly off topic but does anyone know how player coaches wages effect the wage cap?

Watson has a one year option that will probably be triggered by playing x number of games, from what Gallen said (unless he gets total frozen out from now on) but Pratley and Pearce are both out of contract in the summer.  There is probably a valid case of "keeping them in the building" but not being in the team other than emergency cover.

All 3 have probably got a lot to offer the club, if not the 1st team and, certainly in the case of Pearce and Watson, their options are very limited if they don't want to move house etc.
  • Excellent window with five upgrades coming in. Pace right and left will give other teams problems and we won’t see their backs bombing forward as much. Better strikers with better service. Loving it.
Glad we didn’t waste the CAP on a CH. Famewo back Saturday which means we will have three of four of our CH available. I also think Gunter has improved in that position which gives us cover there as well.

Glad Maddison has left. Sad that Williams has left and I am sure that if had not been for the CAP he would have kept him, but needs must. He has been replaced by a player that can play 90 minutes and who’s record shows produces more goals and assists.

Wierdo leaving also disappointing, but the right to buy back is sensible and shows the decision was not clear cut.
  • I’m very pleased especially when I think back to previous windows. I thought we might just miss out on autos but now I think we could get there, especially if we win tonight as I think it could start a run.

I’d probably say 8/10 as I was still hoping for a CB. If Famewo breaks down again we’ll have an issue and I have real doubts about when/whether Inniss will get fit. Jaiyesimi was a really cherry on top last night and lifted much of my ‘Doughty gloom’.

It’s interesting seeing people mention Pearce and Pratley as I think a ‘Kinsella figure is still missing. I had hoped Watson could bring this but I’ve not seen it yet. Whatever happens this summer I expect us to go for a midfield general. I’m also hopeful that the loss of JW won’t hurt the dressing room vibe too much.

Tbh though Pearce is clearly a very natural coach, teacher, leader etc. I'd prefer him to stick around at Charlton
Pearce and Pratley are wonderful and essential leaders and role models to the younger members of the squad.
They are major assets, irrespective of any discussion as to whether they merit a place in the starting 11.
    I entirely agree. And I think Pratley is definitely a first-reserve centre-back too ;)
  • Pleased with the window. Running start for the squad rebuild that will be necessary from June. Excited to see the players that have come in. Hope they improve the team.

Dressing-room leaders? We've got LOADS imo

    - Pearce obv
    - Pratley obv
    - Gunter fairly obv
    - Oshilaja definitely has this about him
    - JFC has 'leader' vibes
    - Millar was Liverpool U23 captain and seems a very cool and level-headed guy. I'm watching one of his videos his wife does with him right now even, they're very cute
    - Stockley seems like a captain figure. "Well done you!"
  • I will go with handsome

    Ins -

Stockley - Unit, I believe he will be a better asset than Aneke and Schwartz

Schwartz - shown glimpses and comes with a good record

Millar - We know how good he has looked recently

Smith - hard to judge, I'll trust Swindon fans on this one and assume he is a decent player but was misjudged a bit

Jaiyesimi - looked a real player in both games, has a good highlight reel and Swindon fans now want their owner dead as a result of selling him? Sounds good enough for me, cherry picking the best players in the lower teams is good business

    Outs -

Maddison - personally disappointed it didn't work out, but I am backing Bowyer here and trusting his judgement, a good goal for us and a few promising crosses but almost like Ben Reeves, Marshall, Ajose and the countless other players we have signed I think he flattered to deceive and was maybe a bit 'Charltonised' before he kicked a ball for us

Williams - love Jonny but let's be realistic, he has never played more than 30 games in a season? Doesn't contribute with many goals and assists, injury prone, manager wasn't sure on him. Luxury player, more suited to a team in the championship who can afford to have a player come off of the bench to change things up, not us I don't think. Good luck to him

Bogle - was wrote off from the start, will be surprised if he scores 5+ from now until the end of the season. Works hard, definitely can be a team player but it just didn't work out for him, Stockley a much better player.

Wiredu and Lapslie - With Brendan he has potential but he wasn't getting his chance here, now we will see what he's made of and we have the option to get him back, good luck to him. Personally gutted about Lappo but obviously his touch hasnt always been great and he wasn't getting his chance here, good luck to George.

Bit more wordy than I expected and may have missed a player or 2? But a handsome window imo, promising for the future

    You missed Smyth
  • Good luck avoiding the seemingly inevitable! Your lot fought well in both games against us, not impossible you'll do it

Hey guys! Stfc fan here..... u have got 2 gems in smith and DJ.
between our owner being an money grabbing idiot and our manager a clueless dinosaur we would have loved to keep them both.

DJ - pacey, tricky, will score u goals, can become non existent and disappear in games.
His release clause was met by you guys so our hands were tied.

Smith - cracking talented young ‘un. Started season so brightly but new manager meant new system and he doesn’t fit the long ball, stay tight at the back 😂  system.
I think we said he wasn’t gunna play as much so Arsenal recalled and offered to you. Lightweight but very talented.
Hope you all enjoyed the meltdown of our ‘fans’. Was a good read!

Good luck moving up the table.

    Thank you STFC.

I'm trying to think of previous players we've signed from Swindon?
  • Good luck to you, seems we have done well with both.

We know the pain of supporting a club and hating it's owner, I'm sure I speak for quite a few in saying I would not wish that on anyone.
  • Really happy, if anything in this world of the salary cap, being able to get rid of players is almost as important as buying them. Puts us in position to move forward. As others have said, a lot will rest on DJ and Schwarz, if those two play to their full potential there will be very little in this division to match them.
That said, I get the impression that this is the situation they would have wanted to be in at the start of the season and that opportunity was robbed from them, so they are essentially one transfer window behind, which all means that I am looking to next year as the big one for promotion.
  • I think the biggest positive for me, particularly once Famewo is back on Saturday. Is that I think we will start seeing more settled positive attacking line ups with real options on the bench if needed as well.

The best compliment I can give is that I am excited for the rest of the season.

The great Arthur Horsfield, of course! The not so great Roger Smart too.

Don't agree that JFC has leader vibes, and I know from someone that knows him personally that he's a fairly quiet character.

  • I'd say that overall it was a successful window.  All look like good additions that will fit to Bowyer's preferred style of play.  Sad to see Jonny go as I thought he gave his all but couldn't last more than 75 minutes.  Always thought Maddison didn't really 'fit'.  Shame about Doughty too - think he has a great future.  Bogle never really looked interested to me.  Anyway let's hope the team, as a whole, gel quickly and we stay in the top 6.  Think top 2 is a push too far this season.

Anyone know - can any of the late signings play tonight?

Apparently Bowyer said Smith will be in the squad tonight but the Lad who signed late will not be.
  • As we are today which player(s) is obviously ahead of Forster-Caskey in the player of the season stakes?

good interview .. as Bowyer says, the squad is a lot stronger and more skilful since January 1st .. promotion beckons ((:>)

Overall a good window - signing Jaiyesimi the equivalent of the last minute winning goal from a disappointing draw.
  • I think it's difficult to say how good a window it's been because of the dampening effect of the salary cap.

One thing I am certain of - it was at least ten times better than what we would have had under RD.

A good window - i''ve not been on much today so don't know if this info is out there but i am reliably informed that Jonathon Fortune is the Swindon winger's agent and he let us know that the player had a £300k release clause so Swindon couldn't do anything about it.
It’s not what you know 😊 Well played JF!

That implies that if he plays, it will be as an attacking midfielder, and not in the engine room
