What constitutes a swing?

to my novice eyes looks like he went for it and then pulled out at last minute

He didn’t break the plate - and as I understood it, the fact he pulled back at this point, should indicate a checked swing and a ball rather than strike called. Really bad call.

The more I look at it the worse it gets. Truly dreadful call. 

The importance of the occasion and the fact that the decision finalised the score makes it even worse. Proper sickener for the giants.

As a Dodgers fan I'm obviously pleased we got through but that was undoubtedly a bad call on the last out.
