Let’s look at this chant, unfortunately the North Upper has latched onto this and feel it’s acceptable to chant this after not winning any of our first 5 competitive games. I think the largely youth element, and those that just join in have no idea of the true place for this chant and of it’s intended impact.
Having been a fan for over 55 years, it’s a call out that is rarely used. It’s not aimed at poor sides, who can not over achieve, it’s not aimed at 100% percent triers where it just isn’t enough, it’s not aimed at kids learning the game, basically a pretty rare situation. In my view we can, if these are put in front us choose to Boo, or just leave early, finishing a game to a empty stadium says more to the team, and management than any chanting.
Let’s save the “Not fit to wear the shirt” chant for those games where we have players who don’t, care, can’t be bothered, want to leave, couldn’t give dam about the club or the fans? An that was not the players who turned out yesterday… by any stretch of the imagination.
The booing and finishing to an empty stadium may have been warranted, but “Not fit to wear the shirt” was unwarranted and can only make things worse. Showing our dissatisfaction with the team in front of us is acceptable, BLAMING the players for that situation is currently in my view NOT acceptable.

That game was also memorable for a "super Alan Pardew" chant, sometimes you do have to be careful what you wish for.
They didn't give a shit.
This current lot tries at least but they just ain't good enough
Like you @RaplhMilne i've been going for over 50 years and i just knew what was going to happen
Thought it was very harsh on the players; you can't say that they didn't try yesterday. There was plenty of effort, but we just did not have the quality on the pitch (or the bench, for that matter) to overcome the opposition. That isn't the players' fault.
The main reason I don't like it is that many of our young players have been thrown in at the deep end and are doing their best - and how do you think Kirk will be feeling after only having joined us a week or two ago? He will maybe feel that he hasn't been given time to prove himself and that we have a very entitled fanbase who, when the shit goes down, turn on their own and look for scapegoats to vent their anger upon rather than sticking together and showing some backbone.
And sadly, I'd have to agree with him.
Show some class FFS. We're not f**king Arsenal.
"You're the worst team thats ever happened,
to me you're the worst..."
With a second verse of ‘but thanks for saving us as otherwise there wouldn’t be a Charlton’. Ensuring happy clappers and negatives are equally satisfied.
I think that CAFC supporters have short memories if they have forgotten how this cycle starts and ends.
Remember when we were first relegated when we came down from the Prem?
We had a team that had any confidence that it could have had destroyed by the hostility of the home crowd. The Valley atmosphere became toxic and as soon as a player made a mistake, the abuse started.
The result? A nervous team that then made more errors, got more abuse etc. on and on. To relegation.
Now, we may not be playing very well, but we'll play even worse if we completely destroy the confidence of our emerging young players and make them afraid to try anything creative on the pitch in case it goes wrong.
When fans and players are divided, results go to shit and any chances that you might have had of breaking the vicious cycle disappear leading to disaster.
Show some patience, please; I don't want the Valley to become a negative, toxic place for our players because it only helps those who wish to see us fail.
Also thought it very harsh to start “Who the effing hell are you?” when Kirk had an early touch. Then I realised it was because Wigan fans had just piped up. I hope Kirk realised that too! 😉
They will just stop giving a shit at home as they will get paid regardless.
I could name 3 that I thought deserved the chant.
99% of the people that sang it wouldn't say it to the face of the players.
They deserved to be booed off but not humiliated.
Bet Amos was glad he fucked off hearing that at the end, hardly going to encourage new signings to come to the club is it.
But you take the flip side when the chips are down. I don’t see an issue personally. Doesn’t mean I don’t see the argument against it, I just feel the fans are more than entitled to air their feelings about the team, just as long as it doesn’t get personal, and start singling out individuals.
Booing, chanting "You're not fit to wear the shirt" and "We're fucking shite" are such blunt instruments. They demotivate the whole team, even those who had moderately good games. McGillivary was good, I thought Kirk showed some promise and also Famewo had a good game, yet they get hit by this barrage of abuse. Being a supporter comes with some responsibilities, our job is to give encouragement to the team through good times and bad. How anyone can think that this sort of vitriol and abuse will motivate players and management is beyond me.
I agree that the team is not good enough and we are likely to see many substandard games this season, that the recruitment has not been good enough and much of the criticism of individual players and the teams tactics overall. However I will never go down the road of indiscriminate abuse of the team. I am a supporter and that's what I will continue to do, even when what I see in front of me is pretty dire. Meet up with mates, have a beer or two, discuss individual players and the tactics and the management failings, criticise all you like, that's certainly what I do every home game, and at the moment it is the highlight of the matchday. But at the end of the game, if the team has played badly, I reflect on the shortcomings, moan about it with my mates, then carry on with my life.
