SKY T.V

How many are looking for new deals instead of SKY as its going up in December

  • Why is it going up? They have naff all.
  • Think Now tv’s offers are ok. With the boost you can share across three devices at the same time. I have virgin tv and will be ditching that in the new year.
  • Virgin wasn’t available down my road up until last week. As soon as My Sky Contract ends in January I’m will be switching to Virgin.
  • I'd ring up when they have their Black Friday deals on and ask to be placed on that, normally decent. I'll be giving them a call because when the deal is over the cost doubles.

I'm looking to do the opposite. I've had Virgin Media for the last 2 years & the picture quality is getting worse & worse. Always glitching & freezing. Tried getting in touch with them for an engineer to come out but you cant speak to anyone - calls just go round in circles & keep being told to go online & get help that way. Their answer, it seems, is to check the co-ax cable & then the ever helpful "unplug the box for 5 mins & let it reset itself".

Got so bad I made a complaint. 5 weeks later they replied with "We cant see a problem - if you think it still exists please  get back in touch". All I wanted was for an engineer to come out, check the cables inside & out to see what the problem is. Never got to speak a human in the 6 months I had trying to resolve it.

I'm in rented property & when I moved in I wanted to keep my existing Sky contract, but the Sky engineer said that they would have to drill holes on the fascia board on the front of the house. Wasn't sure the landlord would want that & as Virgin cable had ben installed previously in the property I thought it easier just to go with them. Recently spoken to landlord & he said that he's happy with a dish being put up. I keep getting letter & emails from.Sky offering discounts for me to "go back" to them....so I will take up their 50% offer & bin Virgin.

  • There’s another recent thread on Sky and lots of us posted about how we got better deals and what tactics to employ.  Worth hunting it down. The Black Friday advice is sound.

I’ve recently left as my deal (a Black Friday job) expired and my monthly subs literally doubled without any prior warning from them that my contract was about to expire. That annoyed me immensely. I also moved to a G2 listed building so cannot erect a satellite dish without a significant palaver. All I wanted to do was watch sky sports online via iPhone or laptop. Sky simply do not have an available package that will let me do that (you have to buy a base pack and then build up the extras which includes sports). We can get virtually all we want to see via Netflix, Amazon and Freeview.  I took advantage of a Now TV sports season ticket at £25 per month that can be cancelled at any time. Sky contracts last 18 months. Since I left I have had countless offers by post to rejoin and for the last couple of weeks they have phoned me daily. I don’t even pick up the phone now. Every offer they make me includes free engineering visits, discounts to the packages etc but they simply cannot get their head around the simple fact that  I don’t have a dish. Successive agents rang without being aware of the back story. One day I’d get an offer through the post and the next I’d be rung up with a higher figure. Comical. As a “platinum VIP” with nigh on 20 years service I expected better. I don’t really miss it. The ritual dance every 18 months negotiating 30 or 40 quid off my contract became a bore.

I get loads of special offers in the post and I've never been with Sky, and never will.
  • I don’t think Virgin offers Sky Atlantic or UHD for sport. Sky Box Sets are pretty decent too (although feels like they aren’t as good as they were previously).
  • Possible Sky announcement re dishless service in uk coming soon.

I am ditching Virgin too - picture pixilation is a nightmare! Got a great deal from the SKY guys based in Bexleyheath Broadway.

Possible Sky announcement re dishless service in uk coming soon.

This is the announcement just out……dishless sky embedded into their own branded 4k TVs.

There is an option to have a 'puck' box to stream to non Sky Glass TVs.....but only if you have a Sky Glass TV as part of your set up.
Will be surprised if there isn’t an option soon to link into existing TV via box as a stand-alone option.
  • Do SKY even need their own brand of TV - I know that you get the option to record etc.

But equally surprised that SKY havent followed the Netflix model

It can surely be done as already have the ability to watch via. SKY Go on my PC

They don't need it.....but they have done similar hook ups with 3rd party hardware providers before. I think that the sky branded sound bar thingy was a collaboration with Diavolo audio.

I think they see it as an initial offering and I'll be very surprised if there isn't the option to have dish-less Sky hooked up to your existing TV pretty soon.
  • People still have sky or virgin tv? Why??
  • Be interested to see what the panel is they are using, and whether I want to be tied to Sky at that level.

Given the terminology being used my money would be on Samsung.

My thoughts exactly - and if so the prices could be very competitive depending on Spec.
  • yeah, doesn't seem to want you to sign up to Sky Fibre, so I might well be in on this as the TV is getting old. Doesn't seem to talk about Wall mounting, think a trip to the new Sky Store at Bluewater is needed

    What are the alternatives?

    What are the alternatives?
The multiple streaming services that you aren’t tied into a long contract with?

  • What if you have a couple of sky mini boxes ?

    What do you mean?

They have an alternative...Called a puck I think I saw and streams to that which connects to TV. So no different really. Just assume it'll be smaller.

This is not an area of expertise (you might have worked that out).

I have sky and two other sky q boxes, with none of the TVs being connected to the main aerial. I don’t like sky but they still offer the best live sport.

I am friends with a homework’s specialist I’m guessing he will be able to help me

I would assume that they are not interchangeable either....ie you use the Pucks only instead of mini boxes if you have Sky Glass.
  • Sky Glass is a wonder - but not if you have broadband speed of 2mbs!
  • Trying to get my head around whether this is a brilliant invention or utterly ridiculous. I need a new TV and I’m about to move house, where I don’t think I can have a dish. So this seems like a good idea.

And yet being tied in at that level sounds horrible - and I just read you have to pay five quid a month to be able to fast forward through ad breaks!

I’m not feeling it at the moment. Think Glass will be great if you only have one main tv but not much benefit if you have three on the go, two of which currently requiring a mini box. Unless this puck gadget is plugged into one of the rear ports on the tv you would still need to have somewhere to put the puck ?

Also, them saying they have removed the set top box is bollocks - the whole thing is a STB. Only you can’t upgrade it without paying for a new TV.

In addition to Glass, Sky will also offer a Whole Home pack, which includes Sky Stream Pucks (boxes) that can work with your existing TVs (adding Sky TV via streaming for a multi-room solution). But these will attract a £50 upfront cost, as well as a £10 monthly subscription and, oddly, they require a slightly faster minimum download speed of 15Mbps (10Mbps on Sky Glass). Sky’s Apps will also extend access to Tablets and Smartphones etc. The Sky Stream Pucks also include 1 x HDMI v2.1 port, 1 x 100Mbps Ethernet (LAN) port and 1 x AC Power Port.

Pucks seem ridiculously expensive with the monthly subscription.
