There was only ever going to be a brief moment of quality in a match like this, hosted in the swirling winds of the north west, but to which side the opportunity would fall was the question. Shrewsbury started the brighter, but were unable to make hay. After twenty minutes the Addicks came into their own, taking possession and advancing their passing play. We won opportunities in key places, from open play and set pieces, but there was no breaking through a resolute, deep defending Shrewsbury Town.
From set pieces we looked vulnerable at times, but for ninety percent of the match we were in control. And it was from a corner that Shrewsbury scored the winner in the final minutes. Cosgrove went straight through the back of Dobson, as clear a foul as you’ll ever see, and the ball fell the right way for the Shrewsbury man to put the ball past MacG who was unable to palm it around the post.
It was not a pretty spectacle, with Shrewsbury dragging us into the mud with them. They were lucky that their patience paid off and, with a bit of poor refereeing, they were able to see us off and take all the points.
Jacko’s run had to come to an end at some point. It’s gutting that it has in the manner it has, but perhaps the sting will provide extra impetus in upcoming matches. Jacko has proved thus far that he and the team have what it takes to learn from each match and I expect this will be an important lesson.

Blatant foul
Edit: and we didn’t “give up late goals like this” today: there was a blatant foul not given.
Personally I think he's still the right man for the job and I expect a big response against Ipswich.
But we were pony today.
This 3-5-2 works well against top teams because the wing backs are able to defend but then work very well on the counter. Against teams like Morecambe and Shrewsbury it doesn’t work at all because both games they were sat too deep and limited us to speculative crosses only. Never mind the poor quality crosses, without Stockley we don’t have any aerial threat at all.
Really disappointed by today’s result and performance and leaves me feeling quite negative about the rest of the season just as things were looking up.
Horrible weather resulting in horrible football from both sides and it’s decided by a terrible referee decision. One of those days.
Couple of weeks until the next league game. Let’s hope we’re refreshed and ready to go.
Quite astonishing incompetence or, if not, just bias on the part of the referee.
As I said on Tuesday, we are jinxed by injuries and shit refs.
Ho hum
Davison isn't good enough to be the back-up striker.
In that time a points yield of 14/21. Two points per game.
No Innis. No Lavelle. No Stockley. No Matthews. No Leko.
Seven points from 9 against teams in the top 5.
11 goals for and 4 against.
I think we all would have taken that seven games ago?
I think we all know enough about JJ that this performance and result will hurt bad and I totally back him to come back from it. A decent length of time between now and our next league game.
This is football, folks. Especially third tier football with third tier level players.
