I don’t know if this is a good or bad move?

A really good player, but is he a shadow of the player he was after his horrendous injury?

You have Clare and JFC to come back into that CM category next season but wing backs defo need improving.
Clare won't add any value in midfield. Similar player to Dobson who is much better there.
Agreed but Dobson must need a rest. Plays 90 minutes every game.

Dont think we've seen enough of him to make that judgement yet. Im going on the basis that he was signed as a CM and thats what he rates himself as his strongest position.
But we have seen him play this season and he is defensive minded. If we want to challenge next season we need energy and creativity in the middle, we have the defensive player in Dobson. Clare ain't the answer in midfield.
So we only have one player for each role?
  • Gunther, Matthews, Kirk, Soare, Davison.    Five players who shouldn't be near our squad if we are looking to the future.   Davison doesn't have the pace Grant does, doesn't score goals like Grant did, wasn't shoved out wide like Grant was.   If Leko isn't going to be here long term (and my jury is certainly out on whether he should be) - then this highlights the poorness of our recruitment.

I'm not sure Browne is the answer.   Chuks has already scored 1 in 2 starts, played a full ninety minutes twice (got booked twice) and is first choice currently.

Browne needs to be a first choice option and available on a permanent at the end of the season or aren't we just bringing in another short term option, who on paper, and injury record, doesn't look like he's going to massively improve what we already have....

If we are looking short term, isn't Defoe more valauble to us until the end of the season, than Browne?...

  • Grant had been an England youth international
Davison was someone released by Peterborough, that we picked up from non league.

That's not to say that Davison won't have a decent career, but realistically it will be in L2 with perhaps the occasional spell in L1 with a smaller club after promotion

Don’t forget, we don’t get injuries and players all keep their form. 11 players for 50 odd games is more than enough.
  • Could potentially be a great bit of business if he’s fit. The fact that we could be getting him on a permanent suggests we’re satisfied with his recovery and see it as a sensible investment.

Can’t wait to see an exciting right footed winger be pigeonholed into a LWB!
  • Just watched the YouTube reel of Browne when he was at Oxford.

I know these videos can be dressed up but he's some player.

    Excited if this one happens.

If Browne is on a permanent, then I still look at the above and hope our recruitment strategy is better than the strategy used for Kirk and Soare.... :-)
  • Permanent deal for Browne makes a lot more sense.

Surprised to hear so many definitive comments about whether Browne is or isn’t what we need. Has anybody really seen enough of him to reach a conclusion? Serious question btw,  I’m not having a dig.
I watch the Quest highlights show, but don’t remember seeing him play (although I don’t pay 100% attention to the Championship matches).

It is kind of throwing the towel in for play offs but it’s realistic.  If we were in the race I guess we’d sign someone who comes in and hits the ground running, Browne is another long term ready for next season, I think it’s a good move.

Your original post quotes JFC and Clare coming back into CM and it's wing backs that need improving. Those CM's aren't enough to go up next year. We have no creativity.
  • With his and our injury history, I’m not sure that a perm is the best idea. Hope he does well but these signings never seem to work out for us.

    Think that's exactly why this'll work 😉
  • Surely a 'try before you buy' would be the sensible decision to see how he is after the injury.

Rather than taking another risk and ending up with Souare mark 2.

I haven’t, so can’t pass comment.  I think the problem stems from the fact we’ve had a lot of poor signings over the last few years.  Even the ones that we thought were potentially going to push us on, haven’t really pulled up trees.

At the moment, until we start performing a lot better, I expect more skepticism on the players we’re bringing in
