  • Mmmmh, youtube is dangerous when signing a player.

With his and our injury history, I’m not sure that a perm is the best idea. Hope he does well but these signings never seem to work out for us.
He’s had one injury, any player could get it. I’d like to see him on loan with a view to a permanent but happy to see him commit longer term too.

Gunther, Matthews, Kirk, Soare, Davison.    Five players who shouldn't be near our squad if we are looking to the future.   Davison doesn't have the pace Grant does, doesn't score goals like Grant did, wasn't shoved out wide like Grant was.   If Leko isn't going to be here long term (and my jury is certainly out on whether he should be) - then this highlights the poorness of our recruitment.

I'm not sure Browne is the answer.   Chuks has already scored 1 in 2 starts, played a full ninety minutes twice (got booked twice) and is first choice currently.

Browne needs to be a first choice option and available on a permanent at the end of the season or aren't we just bringing in another short term option, who on paper, and injury record, doesn't look like he's going to massively improve what we already have....

If we are looking short term, isn't Defoe more valauble to us until the end of the season, than Browne?...

Isn't Browne a midfielder and I would have thought a long term prospect if we do sign him.

Judging from the highlights reel a big part of his game is pace, I wonder if his recent ACL injury will have an effect on that.

We'll see. But we saw Browne has a great 1st touch and control of the ball, plus strength to hold the ball up (like Chuks).
I also like the way he reads the game, his anticipation and awareness of what's going on around him; and composure.

He seems like a player who believes in his own abilities.
We've seen him only on Youtube - but Jacko will have been well aware of Browne at Oxford a few years ago.

  • Hopefully he’s fully recovered and the same player as before. Not often I’d say this but when you see these comments a loan with an option certainly feels safer
  • He looks a good player but why are we signing another winger? Unless he can play wing-back whats the point

Very upsetting for those preaching the "TS is skint" narrative.
They find a way to put a negative spin on everything TS does. They’ll assume Browne is cheap and injury prone.

Agree with this, however by the time he gets fully up to speed how much game time would he actually get this season. And if he did happen to do well would he be happy to play in L1 thereafter. If he passes his medical a permanent move with a view for next season and beyond may look a better option.
A gamble either way but in balance a short term permanent deal may suit us better.

Can play down the wing or AM. It’s been obvious JJ was looking for another attacking midfielder to compete with Lee.

  • I asked my Boro mate what he's like.
'Injury prone so fits the bill at Charlton, there's a good player in him but needs to play week in week out. Also highly doubt he can play wing back'

He can play wide, but his main position in central midfield.
I view this signing is an upgrade/competition with Lee. His scoring record is good and we need attacking midfielders to be chipping in about 10 goals a season.
This is how I want to see this, but he does seem to have spent a lot of time playing on the wing.

He looks a good technical player with a turn of pace. My only concern (more so than his injury or taking a punt in him as a permanent signing) is his position. We definitely need cover for Lee, we did before his form dropped off, and Lee is out of contract in the summer. My question with Browne is, can he play in a midfield three (though Jacko could push him further forward and switch to a 3-4-1-2) in League One?

Basically, I hope it's not another Kirk situation, signing a good player who is available, but one who doesn't fit the system or who we don't have the right support for. I'm more than happy to be wrong on this. Just want to make sure we're getting it right as he'll probably command a fee and decent wages and we don't need another right footed left winger if it turns out that's where he's most comfortable.

Isn't this the type of deal where a loan until the summer with a view to a perm would be the best route?
The player or Boro are prob not interested in that, more they want to free funds and a space up now. I think it is a good deal for Charlton, they are prob picking him up on the cheap now, and build him up for next season. Good age at 24, hungry, point to prove, lots of potential!
I don't disagree with any of that but it took JFC more than 2 years to become the player he was.   Maybe Browne is close already, maybe he isn't.

Forget about this season but it adds question marks to next season as well, which we could really do without.
  • I like the signing if we can wrap it up.

Proven top league one player who is at a good age to get better and hopefully grow with us.

I understand he has had a bad injury but think due to our record we are oversensitive to that.

  • Not sure we should be looking at yet another player with major injury concerns. We have enough of them already. Good player at his best, but this is a big gamble, and a gamble I don't think we should be taking.
  • I asked my Boro mate what he's like.
'Injury prone so fits the bill at Charlton, there's a good player in him but needs to play week in week out. Also highly doubt he can play wing back'
It keeps getting mentioned he is injury prone but apart from the serious one that he is recovering from what else are we talking about?
Don't think we will want him as a wing back but as competition for or instead of Lee.

Neither was JFC injury prone until he did his ACL, then a year of muscle injuries, then did it again.  He isn't injury prone but has basically missed 3 seasons.

From what I can gather, it's not so much that he's injury prone in the same sense as Inniss (picking up lots of niggles) but rather that it's one rather serious injury that could have multiple complications in the medium term.

Although I've not got first hand experience it also seems possible that he's going to face a bit of a psychological wall where he is (potentially) fearful of going all out for risk of a recurrence.
