Non of them I'm afraid. Like I said, when you hear it you will know it's the one...

Early 1970's.Β  It was a hit. It has a very recognisable organ riff. It was probably sung by a band.
For years I suspected Procol Harum but no...
I remember it being very theatrical.
Could be a European band (Dutch..?)
I was 11 years old and spoke no English at all, as with all other English hits, I sang Gibberish to it, and you can't google that...
I hummed the organ riff to many people,Β  they all said it was a very well known song but none of them could name it or the performers.

Friday night my sister and I spent half the night singing that bloody tune to 3 different song recognising apps. (With and without Shiraz) shtummmm !!!

So - and here is where you my educated Addicks come in.

Yesterday, due to the 40 degrees scorcher of a saturday, I decided to do something about this and put an end to my misery.
Sat in front of what I call 'my home studio' and recorded a sample version based on the tune in my head. I called it '11 years' and replaced the Hebrew Gibberish with English ones.

So now, please good souls, take a moment of your time (it's short) and help me solve the 50 years mystery.

    Here it is:

Listen to 11 Years on #SoundCloud
You say it was a hit but in what country & was it a pop chart hit or just a popular specialist radio station hit ? Apologies if similar has been asked but it's gone 4am, I need to get some sleep so couldn't be bothered reading all postsΒ  :D

Sorry for the inconsistent information provided.
It was a hit in the sense that it was played on mainstream radio, and an 11 (coul be 10 to 13) year old boy was exposed to it enough to have it's music engraved in his memory.... for obvious reasons I couldn't tell you how high it got to in the charts...

Happy to help. I told Mrs Danepak about this thread and she said that her mum likely would know.

Never heard of Roy Philips before, I am in tears watching this rendition from about 10 years ago. Check out the reharmonization at the end and perhaps you will understand why

........... well this thread was a nice positive one! I kept checking to see if the mystery was solved - have to say I am quite good with music questions from this era and guessed all the ones others had suggested but had never heard of this before , strange tune :)

Spending a total of four weeks in the UK singles chart, it peaked atΒ No.Β 34Β on January 31, 1970. However in New Zealand it had had a large impression and was hugely popular, giving them their highest charting single.

I can see how you thought it was European, there's a vibe of French chanson played by fans of Sly Stone about it.Β

Just been told that back in the 80s, she won two TV’s. They had a quiz on the radio, where you had to listen to a tiny sound bit and guess the song.
She had to use her sisters name, when she won the 2nd TV.

Also, she just told me that she actually was going to hear them live at an RSL in Sydney in the early 70s. But they couldn’t get in, as her husband wasn’t wearing a tie…

Reminds me of a bloke I used to work with. The first note of an intro to a song would come on the radio, and he'd start singing (shouting at the top of his voice) the first lyrics or the chorus. Tbh it was quite impressive

This thread made me think of this podcast . Musically minded might enjoy the β€˜etymology of a hook’ …. I made that expression up…

I remember the Peddlers. They were the β€œresident” band providing a musical interlude on a TV comedy show. I forget which one. A friend of mine used to do a great impression of the singer.

I feel a bit cheated because, had you put the wah-wah on your sound cloud version, I would have got it straightaway. What do you mean? Of course I would have!

Danepak's mum in law must have some ear and an extremely eclectic taste in music.

    Interesting fella.Β

It seems I actually bought one of his records in 1964 when he played guitar on the Honeycombes hit, 'Have I the Right'.Β  Started with Joe Meek.

50 years of pain not knowing and all you had to do was ask Charlton life and within less than a day somebody knows it. Impressive stuff. shame the song wasn't really worth it...

    Wow!
I remember the Peddlers, they had 2 or 3 minor hits around the turn of the 70's.
I remember Tell the world we're not in andΒ  of course Girlie, now I've heard it, though I never would have remembered in a month of sundays if Danepak hadn't come up trumps
