We need Gilbey's running, movement and energy in the midfield.
Unless Morgan starts putting on performances to impress Chelsea, Gilbey is the player to team with Scott Fraser.
Agreed, Gilbey gives us real energy, with and without the ball. We become very pedestrian without him. He needs a little more consistency though.

I just don't see it, have held my tongue and watched and waited patiently but I do not see what Gilbey brings to the team. Last night he was not awful but he was our least good player. He does not score enough and he does not create enough, what does he bring to the team. His passing in other areas is not of sufficient quality.

This is why I enjoy this forum (most of the time), if you replaced the word Gilbey for Morgan I’d agree!!, but that one word makes me completely disagree with you. I’m probably being a little harsh on Morgan to be honest based his play on Monday. But I doubt Albie will continue to be first choice once the other players are up to speed.
But we don't have a significant number of people saying that Morgan is our best midfielder and that he should be in every team. I think that most people on here had all but written him off as a first team player prior to the last few games.
I am really pleased that Albie has stepped up, I hope Alex does the same.
He has certainly improved slightly, but I wouldn’t say stepped up like he’s been really great. If that’s what your saying?,then I think you are very easily pleased. As for your Gilbey comments, I’m pretty sure we can’t have been watching the same player. He had a couple of low key games, I’m guessing he was probably a bit knackered, those games also coincided with really poor team performances. They are different players but if you have to choose one, there isn’t even a debate to be had. I think Fraser replaces Morgan in the team with Gilbey and Dobson.
i think our first choice centre mid will be dobson, gilbey and fraser with nile john covering for both dobson and gilbey and Lee for Fraser - i predict albie morgan will be at gillingham within a year and watson will have retired

I am not running an Albie appreciation club, more I am questioning the belief that Gilbey is one of our better players. Recent games are an indicator of current form or possibly direction of travel in form. Players should be judged in the long term, probably over longer than a season. Both fall short for me.
What I am saying is that there is a debate to be had and neither Gilbey nor Morgan have demonstrated enough to me that they are good enough to be first choice in a promotion winning team. Possibly both may be good enough for a promotion winning squad though. I think we might end up with a midfield of Dobson, Fraser and John.

I really have no idea about John, so can’t comment which is why for me at the moment he’s not in the equation, he’s a young lad with promise but no game time at this level. I’d be interested to know if anyone has seen,heard about him and what they think. Should I be excited by us having him. If he is anything like Conor Gallagher I’d be over the moon!!.
Interesting about assists stats relying on finishers at the club. I can remember Lee laying on a few sitters that people have missed. Leko missing from about three yards out is one in particular I recall. Stockley missing two free headers from close range... I wonder what Lee's Expected Assists are, anyone have access to WyScout?
Lee has 4 assists from expected (xA) of 4.05. So not really any conclusions to draw from that.
My take on this is that Scott wanted to go to a club that valued him.

Agree. In truth, Ipswich used a scattergun approach in the summer and signed anyone with a pulse and talent. That approach will always have limited success as they haven't bought players to work to a system.
Scott Fraser knows what his strengths are and knows that our system is perfect for him. I honestly think this is the most exciting signing under the TS era so far. A real step up on what we have and could really help complete the puzzle.
Good of such a massive club with such high standards like Ipswich let him go and pursue an easy life at a minnow like ourselves.

Nothing about us being a shithouse club 15th in league one, where anyone who can remotely play football will be a guaranteed starter and with the lack of attacking talent from midfield if you can hit a forward pass over 3 yards you’re considered a cert for inclusion .

I could see Gilbey potentially filling that role - he does plenty of running and legwork but his final ball is not always great. In theory the two could complement each other fairly well... In theory.
