The place we have hitherto called Turkey is officially changing it’s name to (I don’t know how to put an umlaut on the ‘u’) Turkiye.
It is now a three syllable pronunciation “tur-kay-ah”.
One reason given (well two of them actually) is to lessen the association with the bird, and also something being a ‘turkey’ being a dud.
The football connection is we once played some ‘friendlies’ over in Turkiye.

As "Turkey" annoys Erdogan, that's a tempting reason to continue to use it...It'll be interesting whether this is something which the people agree with.
The latest is Kiev. Since all this trouble with Russia the Ukrainians want to go back & call it Kyiv.
The capital of Turkey was Constantinople it's now Istanbul. (Great song about it btw)

Bet that was a pain to get in a chant of the terraces in Tripoli.
but seriously lots of countries changed name to throw off the final yoke of colonialism and in the case of Ivory Coast the Cote D' is simply Francophoning the name of what is a French speaking country .. the D R Congo seems to change its name every time a new government or new tribe takes power
