Speed camera on Woolwich Road

  • The new Silverhouse Tunnel will do wonders for pollution.

It's a great idea to put 20 mph limit on a dual carriageway- raises plenty of cash.

20 mph limits on main roads are crazy. Here's why. Let's assume the section of road is one mile long to make the maths easy. At 20mph it will take three minutes to complete the mile. At the old speed of 30mph it would have been 2 minutes. So, as long as the traffic volumes stay the same, there will be 50% more vehicles in the same length of road at any given time. This means the traffic will be heavier, congestion will be worse, getting out of side roads will be more difficult, pedestrians will have more problems crossing the road, cars will be using more fuel because they are in a lower gear and pollution will be worse.
All of which kind of demonstrates that all the mayor is really interested in is making money from motorists.
It's about reducing the number of deaths when pedestrians are hit by cars.
Can't find a single news report of a pedestrian being hit by a car on that stretch of road. It's certainly not an accident blackspot.

I think it's about making money.
Sorry but most of London is 20mph now. These new cameras are mobile. Beware.
  • Not much more annoying than 20 mph main roads. Also Lewisham drivers who stray in to Bexley and assume 20mph applies there. If Bexley goes to 20 I will likely give up driving.

It was a mobile camera. Comes with a tripod out of the back of a car.

You won't see the 40 new cameras on Google maps (or your satnav). They move around to catch speeding motorists.

It will at some point and you giving up driving is what they want. There is talk of some of the city going to 15mph.

Might be an idea to reduce the speed limit down to 10 mph - should help to raise more revenue.

Don’t speed, no cash raised. Simple really.

You will if you use an app called Waze - user submitted info permitting.

Ludicrous fines for ridiculous speed limits on a dual carriageway- nothing to do with safety and all about revenue generation.

The police like Khan don't give a shit about road safety but they're happy to stand there with their mobile speed cameras to raise money. They'd install a permanent camera if safety was the issue.

Obey the speed rules. No problem then.

Fixed cameras don't work, specifically because people know where they are, and slow down for them before speeding straight up again.

Bore off if you have nothing intelligent to say about how speeding rules are applied other than inane comments.

You're obviously the type to blindly accept everything without comment.

If you want to cut speed put in a speed camera in dangerous areas rather than a random use of mobile cameras - it will be more effective overall. It depends if revenue generation is the issue.

It would be nice to see some traffic police enforcing road rules on motorways and A roads.
  • The empty cycle lanes in the borough need to be paid for somehow.

It is likely that it will not be random use. It will be roads where speeding is known to happen.

The random part is that drivers won't know they are there.
  • Always laugh when people say "It's for road safety" when it took a decade and at least 2 deaths to get a crossing put in by the fire station in Lewisham.

Suppose the point is; if they installed fixed cameras at accident blackspots, it would help reduce accidents. If they then kept speeds on the rest of the network at sensible limits, it would look less like they're just trying to generate funds.

Fixed cameras have been used for years. We've all seen drivers slow down for them and speed up immediately afterwards.

This is about enforcing speed limits over wider areas.

TfL are now using GPS to limit some buses to just under the speed limit on stretches of road like across Blackheath.

The stretch of road where the camera was located yesterday is a dual carriageway but the inside lane is a bus/cycle lane. Some drivers cut into the bus lane at way over the speed limit which is dangerous.

Installation of a speed camera requires three life changing injuries at a given location, so I was told at a speed awareness course.

Indeed it is, and like you was told on a speed awareness course.

I don’t think you understand what intelligence is or what inane means.
  • Just with reference to the 20mph signs in this pic. There are two schools there with kids often darting across the road to the bust stops and generally messing about on the roadside. I think 20mph is reasonable.
  • Twenty miles an hour is laughable. You can do that on a bicycle.  You would have to be practically asleep to hit anything at that speed.  It's not easy to drive at twenty when you have been conditioned to thirty in urban areas and it invariably involves changing down a gear or two. The Police know this and target speeding in these areas because it's more lucrative. I got done opposite the entrance to the Stone Lake retail park in Charlton (Currys/PC World) by a copper who ran out from the turning with a gun. I was doing 26mph and at risk to no-one. This nonsense shouldn't prioritise over burglary and car crime which is no longer investigated.
    Speeding is a car crime.

There’s no evidence just prejudice and self entitlement.
