Charlton Athletic vs Burton Albion | Saturday 19th March 2022 - 3pm KO | Match Preview

Charlton Athletic vs Burton Albion
Saturday 19th March 2022 - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Rebecca Welch

Introduction
The Addicks finally returned to winning ways on Tuesday night with a well deserved win over Kent side: Gillingham - Despite another nervy start, Charlton quickly took control of what was an important fixture, and an Alex Gilbey goal shortly before half-time ensured that the points wouldnt be heading back down the A2... We stay in SE7 this coming weekend, its Football for a Fiver once again, with Burton Albion heading down from Staffordshire.

The Opposition
Name: Burton Albion (14th) | Manager: Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink
Ground: Pirelli Stadium
Previous Meeting: Burton Albion 0-1 Charlton Athletic

These two sides last met in mid-November; Charlton were three games into the stewardship of Johnnie Jackson, and fans were able to think about moving upwards in the League Table - We were travelling to Burton off the back of what was a deserved draw against Rotherham United. Whilst it turned out to be a challenging, and briefly, bad tempered game against the Brewers, the Addicks narrowly deserved the three points, courtesy of an in form Ben Purrington goal.

As already mentioned, this Saturday allows for a second reunion between Jayden Stockley and Deji Oshilaja. Who like last time, will probably be unable to contain their joy at seeing each other again, unsurprisingly Trevor Kettle didnt see their warm embrace that way, and both received their marching orders.

Since that encounter; Burton have been a proper mid-table side, they've spent the season occupying the positions between 10th - 15th, and apart from a spell in January, where the Brewers went without losing in four games, have never really been able to put a serious run of form together. They come into this game having beaten Fleetwood Town 3-2 last Saturday, so will have had a longer break than the Addicks. Yet have just four away victories all season, their last coming at the end of January, defeating Lincoln City; 2-1.

Charlton Team News
Its certainly a relief to see players returning, and as a result, its no surprise to see results picking up once again - Tuesday night saw a return to the line up for Conor Washington and Corey Blackett-Taylor, both have been absent of late with hamstring injuries, so could well have their minutes managed, and so avoid a recurrence of any injuries.

Elsewhere and Jake Forster-Caskey made a welcome return for the U23s in midweek. The experienced midfielder has been a big loss this term, and expects to appear for that age group on one more occasion before being available for first team duties. So could well be back amongst the team ahead the visit of Lincoln City, or at worst, the newly re-arranged trip to AFC Wimbledon.

MacGillivray
Clare - Lavelle - Famewo
Jaiyesimi - Dobson - Purrington
Fraser - Gilbey
Stockley - Washington

Substitutes Bench: Harness - Pearce - Gunter - Blackett-Taylor - Lee - Burstow - Leko

Prediction
Whilst matters weren't completely perfect on the pitch on Tuesday night, there were signs of a team that really shouldn't be in the position that they find themselves in - It surely helps the whole squad, given the fact that we have our most lethal strike pairing back, and so expect another positive result come 7pm tomorrow afternoon.

Good preview FA, and following on from Tuesday night when we broke our duck with a win, albeit far from convincing, i can see us getting back to back victories Saturday, which will hopefully put to bed any lingering relegation fears, so would happily take another 50/50 game with a 1-0 result on a sunny Saturday at The Valley..

2-1 win. Boring dead rubber match. Think Washington and Stockley combination will be too much for Burton.

    1-0 win again.

I think we'll probably scrape a win, as having our strikers back again makes a big difference. More importantly, we're not playing lesser teams, the sad reality being that we're not good enough to compete with the promotion chasers

I'll have to miss this game as well due to Covid

Just play strongest possible team. Not anything to play for now or preserving players for more important games. CBT should start and if struggling can be replaced. He has had 4 days to recover. 1-0 win to get us all excited and dreaming of next season's assault on automatic promotion😉

Certainly hope CBT is starting. Makes it more entertaining, especially as there’s nothing much to play for now.
Top half finish apart, of course.

Christ had a mare with my line up - Left out both Clare and Blackett-Taylor completely
I suspect Jesus will eventually get over it given he handled being crucified by the Romans and he still came back 3 days later.
Yeah but he never had to worry about watching Charlton at a 3pm.

Bet he'd be arguing with his Dad as to why he got brought back after seeing us for a second time.

For the first time since about April 2017 I don't care really, probably will do something else as opposed to follow the game.

It's quite a nice feeling after what feels like 4 seasons of every game mattering.   Would have been better if it was about a month later because we had wrapped up promotion already.

    Excellent preview as usual FA.
With players returning from injury I expect us to struggle to a 2 1 victory.
Still can't wait for the season to finish though

A win would be nice. As the weather is looking good, I might venture down to the Valley. Will be the first time since last November … COYR

Always a bit rubbish when there's nothing riding it, however going to Charlton is still a good thing imo so will enjoy a couple of beers and a day out 👌

Hopefully not as cagey as Gillingham and we play with the vigour and urgency we had at the start of Jacksons reign and give the fans something to cheer about. JFH just annoys me for some reason so us beating him would make me happy!

2-0 Charlton. CBT (deserves a goal) and Stockley

I know we always seem to have plenty of stoppage time when we're leading a match but nearly two hours? That's just taking the p155.

Can’t see any changes to the starting line up as long as Washington and CBT came through Tuesday and now not playing Tuesday think we can risk them tomorrow

:D - Wont be long before a 7pm ending happens, always feels as though our games end later and later

I’m still annoyed a JFH’s refusal to celebrate when he scored for us at Stamford Bridge. It was like he was actually gutted that he scored. Was sitting with Chelsea mates, which made it even more embarrassing.
    Hope we stuff ‘em tomorrow.

Another giant of the game! What a joy League 1 is. Hope we stuff 'em, given who their manager is. My prediction is 2-1 to us, I am the eternal optimist.

I think we will win this comfortably, 2-0 or 3-0. Lavelle seemed much better when Jason Pearce was playing along side him, so would be tempted to jiggle the back line to include Pearce. However, I also  thought Purrington had a good game Tuesday, and linked well with CBT, so might be best to stick with that. I would definitely like to see DJ on the right in place of Adam Matthews, but I don't think that will happen. Jackson seems to like one defensive wing back. having said that, I think DJ has been very good defensively the last couple of games he has played.

    Female ref …….. interesting
You had better be on your best behavior this week with your ref appraisal! I am expecting her to be above average. She can't possibly be worse than many we have seen at the Valley this year. It will be interesting to see if the players give her more respect than usual. i hope so. I also hope there are no stupid sexist chants from the crowd.

The Vanburgh now closed, I have tested positive. So not that much too get excited about. 1-0 and the run continues.
