I'm pretty sure no club has ever said 'Ben Garner is the man we must get' so i highly doubt he was first choice.
Equally i'd be very surprised if he was low as 8th or 9th.
My best guess is that he's probably around 4th or 5th choice. Warburton probably said no as he will hope to get a championship job, Beale probably wants to stay at Villa a bit longer, Taylor maybe isn't so sure about leaving Exeter, so then we're into a group of whoever else, of which Garner is clearly one.
Like most others on here I would have preferred a "bigger" name, but when we were linked to him earlier in the week I read his wiki page & thought his pedigree & stats looked good. That was confirmed when I saw this seasons League 2 stats. Most impressive.
He has had years coaching the youngsters & bringing them through to play in the first team. I can see that was attractive to TS as he has said multiple times he want to get our Academy cat 1 status & to use it to bring players into the 1st team instead of spending ££££ on players every season. This was his plan last season but Adkins wasn't fully on board (hence starting the season with no fit left back & no active midfield).
If Garner can reproduce Swindons stats from last season I'll be very pleased.
I think BG is a good appointment. He is well thought of in football circles and has worked miracles at swindon. To clarify the bristol rovers episode, he was tasked with rebuilding the club from bottom up. He sorted a new training ground and was implementing changes to all aspects of running a club with the full support of the owner. He then had to take some time out due to family reasons and was stitched up by someone at rovers who got in the owners ear. He wasn't given the time needed for his changes to bear fruit and was replaced by Tisdale who was a complete nutcase. Barton has benefitted from what BG put in place but would never give him credit.
Another positive is the way he turned around a poor first half against port vale into dominating the second half.

Question, he certainly wasn't number one choice as he wasn't the first manager to be spoken to. But whether TS spoke to 3/5/10 or 100 I don't know.
But the same mistakes are being made time and time again, players bought on stats, now managers.
But despite Swindon being number 1 in almost every stat last season, they weren't top in the one that matters - promotion.......So a manager fail to get one off the best squads in league two out of the division, so we'll give him a go at getting us out of league one with in a relative terms arguably a worse squad...... Swindon only just made the playoffs by a point.
Why would the first manager TS interviewed be his first choice, and how do we know he even had a ‘first choice’? Sounds to me like they interviewed, and if the rumours are true, are still interviewing lots of candidates.
Maybe they went into it with a complete open mind and wanted to hear from as many managers as possible which is why the process is taking as long as it is.
Secondly, and this is complete ignorance on my part due to my lack of knowledge, but what do you know about the Swindon team and it’s players to say they had one of the best squads in the league? From what I read they had 7 players at the beginning of the season, and had been in somewhat of a downward spiral.
If you believe that then IMHO you are deluded. TS much like RD has a very small pool of managers who will work under his 'set up', especially in League one, which he is now finding. Garner wasn't first choice or even 5th, but he may well be one of the few prepared to work under the set up provided by TS and MS.

I’m very surprised at the line you are taking here. I presume you have good reasons for it, as it’s quite unsettling. On the face of it, I’m not sure how you could have access to the full recruitment long-list, which is what you imply.
I certainly do not have access to any form of head coach recruitment list, but I am aware of a number of potentials who have been spoken to/sounded out, and I also know why some of them are not interested.
You have an owner and son wishing to dictate to seasoned professionals the style of play, a much lesser than normally expected input into player recruitment, this really is no different to the infamous email from RD and the diamond formation to Powell and how players were brought in. TS is a just a bit more friendly/cuddly and here (more!)
As I mentioned above, some seem to think Jackson was appointed due to his record as Caretaker, that's simply not the case, TS was unable to persuade anyone to come (that he wanted). Just remember he was appointed as Caretaker on 21st October and it wasn't until almost two months later he was given the permanent gig ............ on a very restrictive contract that TS knew was highly likely to mean he could remove Jackson at the end of the season easily and for minimum cost.
Good luck to him if he's appointment. I'll back the team, can't not.
What's annoyed me though, again, is TS grandstanding comments. Last season's We're going walk the league, that worked well.
Now its one about our ambition of the managers we are trying to appoint, saying we're aiming higher than Beale, who's the hottest property of the english coaching world right now, and he pulls Ben Garner out the bag.

On a negative side despite all that possession and shots, their defence was awful as they finished 6th and conceded more than any side in the top 10.
Clearly TS thinks that being entertained is more important than promotion. I think all of us would disagree .
I think your both write and wrong mate. Ofcourse promotion is important more so to TS than most of us as it lowers his losses if we get promoted. However entertainment is also very important surely ? I know we are all different but if you asked me would I spend my cash next season watching the same turgid crap we saw last season if it got us promoted then the answer is no definitely not. Ofcourse I would be pleased we got promoted but I would be buying tickets to watch it

I think people need to catch a grip personally. We are a lower third division side run by an eccentric owner. The only big names we would have attracted were the needy and the desperate. We’ve been through that before. We were never going to get Beale either. That was an utter red herring. And had we done so it would have been a massive risk. Brilliant coach but brilliant coaches have bombed before as Managers (Paul Clement anyone?). Thomas’s fiddling and nepotism will be well known through the game’s grapevine so we were never going to get a Warburton type signing. I suspect Ben whatsisname is third or fourth choice but I can see how his recent record would be attractive to TS. I’m underwhelmed but prepared to give the guy a chance. If he plays attractive football that will at least be a start. Let’s be honest, some of the names in the betting lists filled me with horror. At least we’ll be well prepared for league 2 if the unthinkable happens and we end up there! Some seriously ambitious recruitment needed now.

There also seems to be an assumption that we interviewed them and they turned us down. It is possible that Garner was the best candidate.

We re-signed Davison because we knew he would miss a penalty and so Swindon wouldn't get promoted thereby meaning Garner would be open to coming to Charlton, and would clearly want to play the same player he used in the league below? Seems legit and not a stretch at all
In the long video Mr Garner talks of his early days starting out. One thing I found interesting was him saying as a young coach starting out he had no ‘network’. As in he had to stop playing early and start at an extremely humble level, whereas others who start out who had had playing careers often have a lot of contacts and associates in the game to draw on. He had to manage what was placed in front of him. Mr Garner accepted that he would tread a very lonely path in the beginning, almost like a ‘who the hell are you?’ scenario from others. Very much like the reaction of some of our fans now. He got his head down and worked and worked in conditions that were not favourable. He joined both Bristol Rovers and Swindon in unfavourable circumstances, and many argue those are the circumstances facing any new manager at Charlton. I draw from all that he is driven, eager to improve, and not afraid of challenges.
