Middlesbrough nearly reached 85% possession when they lost to usElfsborgAddick said:I would not be surprised if you saw somebody score 10 in a game.There will possibly be games where teams could almost reach 85% possession. The group stages could be more interesting when the minnows are playing each other.2 -

Yes, there will be parts of it that will be a ballache, too expensive, too hot, too corporate etc.
But it’s an event that comes around every four years, and life’s too short to find the negative in everything.Bring it on.
Tickets, accommodation, flights all in this is setting me back about £5-6k for a three week trip.
If we get to the Final and I end up going back out for it then that number doubles. Even as a member of the England Supporters Club. Thats the part that I find is really disgusting from a price perspective, because they actually take the money off of you (£3k for a ticket) before the tournament and hold onto it!
But that factor aside, it is doable to make the rest of it seem reasonable. I literally pressed the pause button on my TV when Englands name came out the hat so I could start booking flights, hotels etc on free cancellation before anything surged too much.Whilst this is not loose change, I would have thought this would have been a bit more. However, for major tournaments around the world nothing is cheap.I hope you come back thinking it was money well spent.3 -

There are obviously going to be some one-sided games but 10 is probably pushing it a bit much. Brazil put 6 past Panama in a friendly the other night and i'd expect us to do similar if we are bothered about pushing for goals.ElfsborgAddick said:I would not be surprised if you saw somebody score 10 in a game.There will possibly be games where teams could almost reach 85% possession. Overnight Haiti (who are in Scotland's group) beat New Zealand (who we play in a friendly on Saturday night) 4-0 in Miami.
NZ are obviously one of the worst teams in the tournament, but that win for Haiti could be a warning for Scotland that Haiti are not going to be pushovers.2 -

I lived in Liberty Village which is just down the road from BMO Field so went to a few CFL and MLS games. As you say, proper shite stadiumLeroy Ambrose said:
The Canadian bird i was seeing a few years ago lived on Lakeshore Boulevard, so you could see the stadium whenever we went into town on the Gardiner Expressway. In that case, shouldn't it go to Australia? There is no rule at FIFA - only money counts.Chris_from_Sidcup said:
I get your point but they rotate the tournament across different continents and you can't host a world cup in North America without the US involved.Mametz said:fenaddick said:
So soon? It's been 32 years!! For reference, the shortest gap is 16 years (Mexico 1970 & 1986). Germany was also 32 yearsMametz said:Normally I look forward to the World Cup finals but not this time. Why has the USA got it again so soon after having it before? Why has it been expanded to so many teams? Extended half times, so as to pack in as much advertising revenue as possible. Etc, etc, etc.
I really can’t be arsed to watch this overblown farce.
Thanks for both of your replies.Algarveaddick said:
Much as I disagree with another totalitarian 😉 state like the USA being given most of the world cup, it's Mexico's third bite of the apple, the last being only sixteen years after the first.Mametz said:Normally I look forward to the World Cup finals but not this time. I really can’t be arsed to watch this overblown farce.I can accept that the America’s have right to host the World Cup, given the enthusiasm of the fans and the success of teams such as Brazil, Argentina and Uruguayan in previous World Cups. But the USA? It is not one of the two most popular sports in that country. It may be 32 years since The USA hosted the tournament but it is 36 years since Italy, three times winners, hosted the tournament, 44 years since Spain, former winners, have hosted the tournament and 60 years since England, former winners, hosted the tournament. In all of those countries there is greater enthusiasm for football than the USA.
The last 5 world cups have been Africa, South America, Europe, Asia and now North America.1 -
It would be beautiful without the Scottish / French navy blue.SDAddick said:

Friendlies mean nothing. Perhaps NZ were trying out new formations. Perhaps Haiti are simply more acclimatised earlier. It all depends on the attitude and approach to friendlies. For some it’s a training session, for others it’s serious preparation.Chris_from_Sidcup said:Overnight Haiti (who are in Scotland's group) beat New Zealand (who we play in a friendly on Saturday night) 4-0 in Miami.

France have hosted three Euros in 1960, 1984 and 2016, which is what the original conversation was about. They won in 1984 and 2000.jimmymelrose said:

If they're trying out new formations a week before the world cup then they're in a big trouble.jimmymelrose said:

Maybe it would be better to use either the verb Win or Host, rather then Have.Callumcafc said:

But in either case it’s incorrect. They’ve only hosted 1 World Cup.0 -

Judging by the very disappointed reation of the NZ Manager after the game I’d say it came in the serious preparation category. They will have to do much better to even by competitive. Frail defence and no urgency in attack.jimmymelrose said:

Just watched a 15 minute youtube video of England players getting out of cars, saying 'you alright' and walking into a hotel and now i'm pumped for the world cup to begin.17

Absolutely fuming they got rid of Josh Denzel from Lions Den. This new guy is shocking, zero charisma.0

Absolutely shocking that a Charlton fan would ever watch anything called the Lions’ Den 🤣11

It’s quite straightforward for England who know the paths to the semi final, whichever position they qualify.
Qualify 3rd
R32 -> 1st Group K in Kansas City (Portugal)
R16 -> 1st Group B in Vancouver (Canada / Switzerland)
QF -> 1st Group J (Argentina) in Kansas City
SF in Atlanta
Qualify 2nd
R32 -> 2nd Group K in Toronto (Colombia)
R16 -> 1st Group H in Dallas (Spain)
QF -> 1st Group D/G in Los Angeles (USA/Belgium)
SF in Dallas
Qualify 1st
R32-> 3rd Group K in Atlanta (as long as 3rd Group K qualified)
R16 -> 1st Group A in Mexico City (Mexico)
QF -> 1st Group C in Miami (Brazil)
SF in Atlanta3
