I really think Washington would have complemented this system and style of play.
While I do agree the problem is I don't think he'd be the first choice to start as the lone striker and we saw his limitations when playing out wide before. Absolutely he'd have been a great option to change things a bit bit I doubt he'd have accepted that.

Players never accepted that. They think they can do the role, force themselves into the team or be so good the manager can't leave me out.
No one, certainly not at league 1 level (I accept it happens at the very top level, Rob Green, Scott Carson, etc etc).
Some times a manager might turn round and say you aren't playing, period. I would rather shit in my hands and clap than pick you. But it's very very rare. Even rarer for "ability" reasons.
