At least this forum shows we are all passionate about England and when we produce a Turkey of a performance we are all trying to find out why ?
There was a negative mindset tonight which was epitomises by Maguire and Stones who are such good mates they mainly passed the ball to each other !
That was our Scotland performance all over again and coming after the freedom we played with against Iran we were back in the straight jacket again. The USA are a very energetic team but are we not capable of matching that by making 3 changes at HT and again after 70 to match the Americans fitness and pace ?
I get the fact that the USA went for the win after their disappointing draw against Wales and England just didn't want to lose.
It just made for a flat evening.
Why does Southgate think Foden has to play wide when he turns up everywhere for City in the attacking third ?
What a disaster of a night. Tried to get an early night, didn’t sleep a wink.
3am kick off, asleep at 5, son up and screaming for waffles at 7.
Was it worth it? Absolutely not, really does you wonder what Foren has done wrong, still don’t see what Grealish brings, other then generally slowing things down and some free kicks.
If Kane scores that early chance the game would have been very, very different. But he didn’t and it wasn’t, we need to find a way to play against well organised solid teams.
I reckon we should get rid of Southgate and maybe get in Capello, or maybe Roy Hodgson.
Southgate is the first England manager in the modern era to understand the formula needed to win in major tournaments. In fact we were only a penalty shootout away in the last one. The one previous we were extra time away from a final.
Both times we had a dud result in the group stage. Today was that dud for 2022.
Gareth deserves a bit more credit than he’s given. It could certainly be a lot worse.
I do think he's done a good job but that shouldn't prevent criticism from fans, the media and ex players when we fail to outplay and beat the US of A?
2022 has seen a drop off in results and with, what most people expect, a group we should win, there are now questions about if we do win the group and how do we beat Wales, who lost 2-0 today to Iran, whom we beat 6-2.
The performance was slow and ponderous. There was a lack of penetration, fluid gameplay and we have a manager who is safety first. A game in which our little played centre half was our man of the match.
We probably expect a bit more. If it gets the shit one out of the way so be it. I just can't see Brazil, France or Spain playing that bad in a game that should you win you guarantee top position in the group.
In 2018, France weren’t overly convincing in their group. A dodgy pen and an OG helped them beat Australia, before they narrowly beat Peru and drew against Denmark.
In 2014, Germany could of wrapped the group up before the last game, but scrapped a draw against Ghana.
In 2010, Spain lost their opening group game.
In 2006, Italy drew their second group game to the USA.
I do. But I'm sure their players and manager came in for criticism because of those results.
Ultimately it will be what it will be but in this group, where a win would have cemented our place as winners and Wales up last, I thought we wouldn't be tactically out thought, out run and create less than USA.
If Foden was played wide left or in the advanced central midfield position (where Mount plays) we'd see the best of him, but Southgate keeps playing him right of a front 3 that doesn't suit him!
Do I back Pep or Gareth to judge his ability? Hmmmm.... tricky one that!
I agree that Foden should be an option on the right although I'm not sure he'd displace Saka in our best team and I understand why he wanted the pace of Rashford in behind yesterday. I would probably start him on the right against Wales if nothing else to let him prove a point and for rotation.
But in midfield him and Mount are different players. Foden can play as a 10 but Mount has been playing as an 8 alongside Bellingham. That has different responsibilities in terms of workmate, getting up and down the pitch and defensive responsibility. Foden does not have that side of his game. In a game like yesterday's when were overrun in midfield taking Mount off for Foden would only make that worse (though I probably would have tried it with 10 mins left see if we could really go at them). We could have shuffled the formation slightly to make it work I guess.
Went out with friends last night so missed the game, just watched the hi lights this morning. We looked lucky to escape with a point so need to learn from it
Hard to see how England could go from being so good against Iran to so bad against USA even allowing for the difference in class of the two opponents. At least now there will be a decent level of expectation and the “I haven’t seen a better side so far than us” stuff can take a back seat for another week. Progress will still be comfortable and the lamentable pensioners of Wales should be duly dispatched. What I can’t abide is the two Harry’s giving their carefully scripted post match platitudes (both of them were word for word and closely matched in the dullard competition) and Sir Gareth with a straight face (boy does he have a straight face!) telling us that we should be happy with a point against the USA and we’re bang on track. No doubt after another couple of victories we’ll be licking his arse again but a “sorry, we were shit and got away with one there, I’ll be taking no prisoners when I get into the dressing room” would have made him less ridiculous and sated our blood lust a little. And yes please, can we ban ITV. Mattersmug is fast catching Tyldesley in the sanctimonious twattery stakes and Pougatch is even worse in that you can actually see the little prick as well as hear him. This tournament really is a mess on so many levels.
The thing I find most frustrating in football in general (Charlton and England), is the unwillingness to change things up in the first 60 minutes or so when things are obviously not going as planned? Surely the intention would be going in at half time 1 up, or at least commanding the game? Literally forgot Sterling was on the pitch for the time he was on it and it weren't going too well for Mount and Saka either, so why not use sime of the very good alternatives we got sitting there, earlier on?
Got a feeling we'll get through the groups and meet a relatively easy opposition in one of the knock-out stages, play the same complacent way, leaving the changes too late, and go out on penalties AGAIN.
Obviously hope we don't and I'll be supporting the boys all the way 🏴
Southgate is the Manager of England because we have reached a World Cup semi final and Euro's final so he knows how to go deep into a competition. The Jury's out if he has the nous and belief to win a tournament; or the right mix of players.
My criticism of Gareth last night was not being quick enough utilizing the bench as this isn't 1966' and no subs but 20 22' with 16 players who can be game changers in an attacking or defensive sense depending on the score and momentum of the match.
Canada, USA and Saudi Arabia etc play an all action game with athletes which is ideal for closing down and being all over teams like a rash. We really should've the ability to beat the above teams but only on a few occasions did we play the ball quick enough will good movement to create chances.
When Saka, Sterling and Mount are struggling to control the ball and having no impact on a game then get Grealish, Foden,Henderson on at least as the 2nd half kicks off. Other options/players are available! Be pro active not reactive.
The bottom line is we were fortunate to get a draw which was down to the much criticised Harry Maguire and no clinical striker for USA
The paradox is WDW in our group games is fine but the way we played last night made for a flat night and we lost momentum after our fine display against the talented but troubled team of Iran. The Iranian players received pictures of their new accommodation if they screwed up against Wales and decided to showcase their talent not their unhappiness at the state of unrest back in Iran.
We move on to Wales where we need to play in top gear against a side in decline.
We aren’t gonna win it playing the way we have most of this year , we have a small chance if we get a lucky route and luck out with penalties 2018 style or we build up and grow a pair in the final 2021 style . let’s face it we’d all give our right testicle for that 2018 run of easy fixtures but lightning won’t strike twice
The issue with Southgate on the whole is the lack of in-game adjustments that better managers are able to make.
He's not really capable of making sweeping changes during a game to win a game that is getting away from us. Either we win big and early or it slowly grinds down to a draw or loss.

I agree with this. The only time I can think his subs have been effective is the Germany game in October. Fortunately he’s got it right from the start in most cases in major tournaments.

Whoever wins the quarter-final between us and France wins the whole thing imo. Just need to win on Tuesday and ensure that route
I couldn’t help noticing how slow a pace the game started, with the back four at virtual walking pace passing the ball to and fro…..for me, after about ten minutes, I thought this does not bode well and sure enough it proved to be the case.

Played: 10 games
3 wins
4 draws
3 losses
33% win percentage. That’s not a good record.
Tournament football is all about getting out of your group and then not losing.

Thats all.
Still fuming that I now have to sit with my Welsh husband through the next match knowing what’s coming.
What have I done to deserve it?
