    Well done Beth

however this shit grinds my gears on the BBC:

Her international goal tally for the 2021-22 campaign was 20 in 19 matches, breaking Jimmy Greaves' long-standing record for the most England goals in one season

    stop talking about different things.
Who is to say someone in the England over 60’s hasnt scored more in a year and why doesn’t that count?

no one says and well done Florence Griffith Joyner on running the 10,009th quickest 100m ever.
Absolutely this. I’m a big fan of women’s football but it’s not the same thing. Stop telling me that whomsoever is England’s second stop scorer. She’s not. She’s England women’s top scorer. And a brilliant achievement that is. But stop convoluting two entirely different things for the purpose of being PC.
One of the problems is that it doesn’t run both ways. Point out that a decent women’s team would get tonked by a men’s pub team and it’s “ah but you’re comparing different things”. If that’s the case then you can’t compare a record in the mens game with one in the women’s game because they are different things.
  • I guess it was the wright decision. It had been a major break through for English women's football winning a major international competition for the first time.
Ben Stokes does not like comming 2nd,  he should have been a bit more gracious.
  • Always the most moving part is the montage of those we lost.

The webpage has a much more comprehensive list, including our own Graham Tutt and Phil Walker
  • Never fucking heard of her.
  • Lionesses to get team, person and coach hat-trick. As the coach is Dutch, they could get the overseas, too.
Should have had a bet on the treble.
  • Never fucking heard of her.
    Well, you have now.
  • Its political correctness gone mad, the lunatics have taken over the asylum!, we are all going to hell in a handcart, etc etc etc

Would quite like to see Eve Muirhead winning it, after finally getting that Gold Medal.

Can see it going to Beth Mead
It's the BBC and a box ticking exercise.
you do know it is a public vote ?

The short list isn't, It's proper dirge.

I understand why there is a shortlist but does it really have to be just 6 - why not 10? Matt Fitzpatrick wins a Major and gets a nanosecond coverage for doing so. Does the BBC really understand what it takes to achieve that? Of course they do because Raducanu won SPOTY last year for doing just that. So how can they exclude a sports person who has achieved the equivalent from even being voted for?
  • didn't see it for obvious reasons, but was it a public vote again?
  • Embarrassing list of nominees and 100% it was done so the BBC could have 3 men and 3 women making up the final list.

No disrespect to gymnastics but surely 99% of the country had never even heard of Gadirova, so how on earth does her achievement rank above a golfer winning a major? I wouldn't even put it above Leon Edwards winning a UFC world title, but i accept a lot of people won't know him either.

Even Lineker tweeted about Fitzpatrick and he hosted the show!
  • The strange thing is why the shortlist these days is so short anyway. From memory it used to be 10, which would give coverage for more sports too.

probably because it had to be announced and shoehorned in the 3 days between the world cup final on saturday to wednesdays show

I've not thought about it, but it would definitely include at least three Charlton players.

I'd struggle to think of three who deserved nominating for Charlton player of the year...  :D
