it does feel a bit like we have let them off the hook a bit this last hour - I think psychologically Aus knew they weren't likely to bowl us out tonight and it was all about limiting us and seeing out time, so in a way we have just played into their hands really - could have been 40 or 50 runs further up the road for maybe another 2? 3? wickets lost - in the grand scheme of the game you'd have to think that would have been worth it - we are only going to do it first hour tomorrow instead aren't we so all we have really done is limited our own time to get them tomorrow.
I don't know too much about cricket so if i've missed something tactically here then happy to accept that! Just seems like a missed opportunity to go for the kill a bit.
Was being speculated on Cricinfo that the Root dismissal might have changed the plan to 'bat once'

And elsewhere. It was the sensible approach anyway. Trying to bat once only is surely the best way to win this game.
Tomorrow morning will be fun. Or carnage as wickets tumble.
Love or hate the Aussies, was very impressed with their total respect for Crawley as he left the field.Even Green who bowled him did not whoop with joy, just a very sincere"well played mate"

still hate 'em
but seriously - probably the first time we have been properly on their level for a long time - I read something on BBC live text whilst I was at work and couldn't watch where it was mentioned that today looked a bit like one of those nightmare days that we always have when we are playing over there. Don't think there's any bigger praise for this side than that. What's a bit frustrating is that COULD (and probably should) have been what happened first test and then progressed from there. Ireland were not the team to warm up with IMO I think we went so gung ho like that because of it.
i'd also add that I think the "Carey moment" for right or wrong will go down as a bit of a watershed moment for this series - even though we ultimately lost I feel like the momentum shifted dramatically after it and as much as he and Cummins might say they would do it again, I think on reflection they may look back on this series and rue it because we have looked better than them for the majority of the time since.
Again, don't know too much about cricket tactically so if i'm wrong then i accept it.
2-0 after 2 Tests was a misleading scoreline, as the gap between the teams is small. My forecast before the series of a 2-2 draw still might come true, as I see England as the dominant team now, but the rain might secure the draw for Australia.
Probably the best day of test match cricket I’ve ever been to. Sat with Kate Cross and the Lancashire/Lightning women’s team today and they were an absolute delight! Absolutely over the moon for Zak ❤️

Edgbaston still frustrates me, should have won that one.
Lords we were always behind, there was a glimmer of hope when Stokes was in but that was about it.
No way we winning this with that weather draw is buying money
Sadly this.
Even tomorrow morning could be disrupted. I reckon we will get a lead of 120-150 and then declare. Try to have them 4 or 5 down before parity and then see what happens.....but with Saturday looking to be a complete washout & Sunday not much better until the afternoon I cant see anything but a draw.
Test cricket should never be played in Manchester. Always bloody rains in the NW.
I think we ought to see a six hitting bonanza. Even if they only make 40 or so, they will be where they want to be and if it goes better they can put more pressure on the Aussies. I expect England to try to put on as big a score as possible in 15 to 20 overs which will mean the Aussies have to bat within that first session for 10 to 15 overs.
Off 78 balls last night Brook and Stokes scored a combined 38 , with the whole weather situation I thought it was a bit lame that we didn’t just go Bish bosh bash and shit or bust last night ok we could be all out for 70 lead but it pushes the game on or maybe 120 lead overnight . obviously iF they’d gone crazy and ended all out 70 in front I’d have slagged em off for not respectin they’re wickets 😛 but to me if I said coin flip 2-2 or 1-3 after this test , we’d have to flip the coin … we need to win The Ashes not take it to The Oval at 1-2
I think they didn't want to give the Aussies anything to latch onto last night. They will be feeling dejected. Today will be different and they will have a set plan of how many runs they want to score ideally and when they want to put the Aussies in. It is just a question of what that plan is.
Also, a bit of rain can make the conditions more challenging. Hopefully.
What do we think bat for a few hours and put them in just before lunch? I assume we might have a total we want to post but equally feels like we really need to go for it so maybe just a few hours and give ourselves a chance to bowl them out today.

We need to have a decent lead though. Pointless declaring if the lead will be easily overhauled, especially if we're on top.
I think we have to assume we'll get some play on the final 2 days. If both days are totally washed out, then so be it, as Test matches don't conclude within 3 days unless it's a minefield, which this pitch isn't.

An hour or so of Brook and Stokes batting in these should do the trick

Glad we sacked OT off for next time!!
