  • Anyone following the women's test? Fear the Aussies are going to put down 400+ unless we can polish the tail, then we are going to be chasing

    No

Sorry to change subject slightly, but cant see another thread for it, hells bells that T20 game last night between Middlesex & Surrey.  That was a great watch...

    Anyhow, back to proper cricket!
We are all over it on the Kent thread. Canters has gone into hiding and Blackpool is leaning towards becoming a Kent supporter as a result. Did you know though that Surrey set a new record? The highest number of runs ever set by a losing team in The Blast and in fact the second highest in the history of T20. And they achieved it against a team that had lost all 10 of their Blast matches this season. They should change their name to the Surrey Trendbreakers!
I believe it halted a run of 14 consecutive T20 defeats going back to last season
  • Morning all
  • Unfortunately we've not also added Foakes....

They basically picked their squad for the first 2 Tests, so Bairstow it is. Rehan is only in because of Moeen's injury, and they went with the like for like attacking option...

Yeah, wasn't really expecting anything else!

I can see Wood coming in for Anderson though.

And Woakes possibly for Broad or Robinson? The maximum we want our quicks playing is four of the Tests and possibly, depending on the workload, three so we will have to be creative in our changes and Australia, for the above reasons, might not have to make quite so many. These were the overs bowled by each of the seamers in the last Test:

    Anderson 38.0
    Broad 44.0
    Robinson 39.3
    Stokes 14.0

    Total 135.3

    Cummins 32.2
    Hazelwood 25.0
    Boland 26.0
    Green 8.0

    Total 93.2

I'd definitely play Mark Wood - we need a bit of genuine pace.

Woakes isn't a bad shout, he plays well at Lord's and can bat too, but Broad and Robinson bowled well at Edgbaston.

Hopefully we'll get a faster wicket and not another road.

The 3rd Test starts 4 days after the 5th scheduled day at Lord's, so some rotation is inevitable
  • I thought Rehan Ahmed was with England's squad at Edgbaston, he was listed as Moeen Ali's concussion sub.

For this reason and the fact that he didn't play the ireland test I actually think Anderson will play. He wasnt match fit coming into the first test he now has overs under his belt, he should be perfect for this next test.

I just think he might fancy Headingley more than Lords and as they're back to back he'll only play 1.

    We shall see!
  • I think Anderson will play at Lords and Old Trafford.  I would pick Wood for both of them as well.

With that in mind I would go with Anderson, Wood and Woakes for Lords.  Broad, Robinson and Woakes at Headingly and Anderson, Wood +1 for Old Trafford.  Then it's probably a form and fitness game.

  • Really don't think we can drop Broad or Robinson after that performance

I agree but they both won't play in all 3 tests will they?
  • Who knows with the current set up? If Stokes can't bowl meaningful overs (7 in each of the innings in this Test and looked in agony in the second innings) then we might we have to go in for at least one of the Tests with Root as the sole spinner. Wood is a short, sharp, impact bowler these days so won't bowl meaningful long spells either I wouldn't have thought. That would leave the other two seamers to do the donkey work and that would mean a lot of overs for them if Rehan Ahmed, for example, was regulalrly hit out of the attack.

I am. Well, have it on whilst working. Gonna be a hard fight to get back in it. Too many runs given away yesterday in the afternoon session and again this morning unfortunately.  Glad Eccleston got her five-fer though.

I would guess Headingley would be the best place to go "all pace"?

Historically you want more pace AND spin for the last two tests.
  • Currently looking likely to rain a fair bit next Wednesday and Saturday.  The 2 days we are going.  Obviously hoping it blows over and doesn't rain at all.  But if not, I hope it rains all day and no play at all so we get the money back (could do with it as Wednesday's ticket is spenny!)

I'm going Friday, and the forecast is uninspiring.

The rip off is that once 30? overs are bowled, you get no partial refund, so you end up paying full price for way less than a full day's play.

Felt for those last Sunday - play stopped on 29.5 overs, so you were at least getting half your money back.

Came back on, 3.overs, lost two wickets, went off again.

No refund and two wickets down.

Well done Tammy Beaumont! 100 in all forms of the game.
  • as captain, Cummins will play all five tests so hopefully he will be less effective as series progresses

Yours truly was one of those. A year ago at Lord's I again saw "enough" to not get any refund, and that was with the extortionate Lord's pricing

Crawley has got Robinson's disease - he thinks we'll win at Lord's by 150 runs. Another player that can't afford to have a target on his back!

I think positive thinking is a large part of the 'Bazball' ethos but thinking and speaking aloud are very different things.
