Manager Dean Holden has confirmed that George Dobson will now wear the captain’s armband.

Jayden Stockley has skippered the Addicks so far this season but the new gaffer explained at his pre-Oxford United press conference that midfielder Dobson will now be taking over the duty.

Holden said: “George is the new captain. I made that decision and spoke to Jayden prior to the game [against Peterborough United]. Obviously as a striker Jayden is essentially judged on scoring goals and creating goals, working hard for the team and being a brilliant teammate. He doesn’t necessarily need the armband for that.

“For me it’s about him focusing on what he can bring to the team as a forward player, really concentrating on that and not having to worry too much about other things away from that. It’s as much of a release for Jayden as it is for Dobbo.

“Dobbo’s a captain-type. He’s not going to perform any differently with the armband on his sleeve but for me he encompasses everything that a Charlton Athletic player is so that’s the reason.

“George is a player I worked with at Walsall a long time ago now,” added Holden. “I know exactly what he’s about as a character and as a person. He’s infectious, he’s 100 per cent in every training session, every game and that can’t be doubted at all.

“There are a number of other players as well that could have taken the armband but I just felt that George was the right option.”

his first decision gets a big 'tick'

  • I mean I totally agree with the decision, but it's a pretty savage thing to do. It's like coming in, demoting your 2nd in command, and promoting someone else in the team to take their place. It may be correct, but it's still a brutal thing to do midway through the season. Should be just as much a reflection on how Stockley is viewed, as putting down a marker for how important Dobson is considered to the team and club.

  • Should never have been given to Stockers in the first place, Good and right decision on Dobson…

  • Surely the obvious choice.
  • Definitely the right decision. As obvious as it was, I'm glad that a new manager hasn't come in and dodged it for an easy ride.

You don't make someone Captain and sell them a week later, so he's staying till the summer at least

Hardly misses a game. Not rated by Adkins at the start of his reign and was left out of the starting line of the first game of this season up at Accrington this season by Garner

Your best captains are the ones that lead by example and don’t miss a minute like Mark Kinsella etc

Now give Dobbo a decent new deal to show we’re moving in the right direction.

I do feel a bit for Stockley. I think he has chronic injury problems and it wouldn't surprise me if his relatively patchy fitness record has had an influence on this decision. Equally, when as captain you're there as a bridge between players and staff in many ways, this switch up has ramifications behind the scenes.

I would like to know how Stockley feels. I agree with this as a decision, and think Dobson will be a great skipper, but the dressing room response is also really crucial here

I beleive that's the second time Stockley has lost the captaincy mid-season?

Adkins made him captain as well and then it shortly went to someone else.

Unless there's a "captain premium" to be added to the sale price ...

    This.

Its one thing dropping him & playing Kanu in his place, but then taking the armband off him as well. Wow. As I said to my boy - says more about Stockley than it does Dobbo.

I hope Stockley throws a tantrum about it like he does on the pitch every game and sods off. Not good enough to lead our attack anyway

I get where you’re coming from, but I don’t think it does. 99.99% of Charlton fans think Dobbo should be captain. By far my favorite player at the club (and judging by this forum most would be of the same opinion) and I think that says a lot given that he is a DM

Yes, very well put. This may look good to us on the outside from a purely footballing decision, but there are potential changing room ramifications. It feels savage, as someone else said, and I'm not entirely sure it needed to be done and done so publically.

I think the obvious thing to ask is: is this a way of trying to get Stockley out the door in January? If so, it's a good way of saying Stockley isn't wanted anymore. If not, or if a move doesn't get done, then you risk having an expensive, disgruntled player who is a leader in the dressing room.

Also, I agree with Paddy that I think Stockley has a chronic back/hip/pinched nerve issue that is plaguing him. Obviously he wasn't a great fit for Garner's system, but he's just looked so off the pace so many times this season. Thinking back to this time last year, he was far more mobile and dynamic in addition to being a goal threat. Obviously we know he's better with a partner, but he didn't consistently look this bad under Adkins when playing up front on his own.

Last thing, if Holden drops Stockley and/or if Stockley gets sold and then we go to a two up front system, I'm going to pull my hair out (with the caveat of he's injured and won't be the same without major rest or surgery--but then I don't know that he'd pass a medical). Holden clearly wants to play more direct, which should suit a fit Stockley.

I don't know, like everything at this club this just feels like the result of a lack of joined up thinking.

Also, congratulations to Dobbo. From not even making the bench to POTY and skipper. Adkins was obviously a skeptic, Garner was a skeptic to start the year, but Dobbo just plugs away and wins people over.

Hope he gets a big helping of parsnips tonight to celebrate.
  • Great decision and love the tongue in cheek comment about Stockley not having to worry about other things and concentrating on his own game as a forward.
I read that as stop moaning at everyone else and score some goals please 😆.
Don’t think Stockley will like this decision, don’t really care if he does. Think George will be delighted and really deserves to lead the team out at Old Trafford.

We’re at our lowest point as a club. Something drastic needs to happen and I’d rather Holden tries to change things than continue this god awful slide towards relegation. I don’t really care too much about changing room ramifications as this is the same changing room that has been badly letting this club and its supporters down. Change is needed and this, I hope, is the first of many.
  • There are two types of leader on a football pitch. One that constantly speaks to everyone, encourages, advises, mentors. The other leads by example. Dobson to me is the latter with the potential to add the former. Stockley in my opinion is neither.

For those wondering why Henderson is a captain of England I don't think you could argue that he doesn't do both of the above things, and that's the best version a captain can be.

The problem with strikers as captain is that if they don’t do their job and score goals they won’t be in the team. Captain has to be a main stay in the team - Dobson is the perfect choice. Well done Dean Holden.
