  • I was told Wycombe were decent payers hence they’re sitting near the top cos they’ve signed some decent players and to get decent players more often than not you have to pay up

Caleb Taylor would be on serious wages although I guess they may have only been paying part of them.

I overheard what sounded like a very credible discussion yesterday, in which it was said that the club have turned down two relatively derisory offers for Jones from Wycombe and really want to hold onto the player. In reality, though, if a Championship team comes in for the player, that will not be possible given the chasm in wages.
I don't see why he would want to move to Wycombe this month anyway, they're hardly a L1 giant like Birmingham who are 99% certain to go up, or a "glamour" club like Wrexham. I doubt the payrise would be that much either.
Exactly. With all due respect, Wycombe is a very small club and I have my doubts as to whether they’ll stay the pace. I suspect that Lloyd will await the outcome of this season and see what his options are club-wise and contractually.

If the owners did decide to cash in, they would face an absolute shit storm from our supporters.
Personally, I think giving the owners a shit storm would be an incredibly naive decision!
The SMT are making bad decisions. Many of which have been highlighted on here.
I fully expect the OG to do what they do best, successfully manage long term strategic investments. Demonstrably successful business men don’t just sit back and allow things to go wrong indefinitely.
There isn’t much patience left amongst this mentally and emotionally battered fan base, I totally understand why, however, I don’t think there’s much patience amongst the OG for treading water either.

I don’t expect this SMT to deliver but I do believe the OG will!
For now, let’s enjoy the upturn in fortunes on the grass…patches.

I doubt a 21 year old academy defender would be on much.

Wycombe have managed to get promoted from League One more recently than us.

They have, indeed, and I fully respect what they achieved then and are achieving this season. They are, however, a very small club and my point is that Lloyd Jones will have better options if he bides his time. He would be a very attractive Bosman option in the summer.
  • If we sold him it would be worse than when we sold May
    Would it?
  • Would be so Charlton to finally sort out the defence and then lose the key part of it.

Think it's been mentioned Wycombe have lost two players they had on loan? We would be stupid to help replace one of them with our best defender and then shift that problem onto us. Let them solve there own problems and see if they can maintain the form that got them to the top 2. If they can and get promoted then Jones will still likely have them as an option in the summer, I really can't see him going there this window, like Dobson last year, it wouldn't be in the best interests of the club for him to join a play offs competitor.

What is the centre half version of Ahadme?

  • Don't understand why he's never played above L1 level apart from a handful of games for Luton.

If we can offer Ahadme a 4 year deal, and Chuks 3 1/2, Jones should be getting at least 3!

Does Jones want a three year deal?

No it wouldn’t, there are far more decent defenders out there than natural goal scorer’s
  • Jones will have good offers on the table and I doubt we’ll be willing to match the best of them. Add to that the fact he walks for nothing in a few months and I have absolutely no doubts that he’ll be leaving. I’ll be really gutted because we should be strengthening not weakening the squad. Having said that we have to remember our lowly status and recent history hangs around our necks like an albatross.
  • I also will be sad to see Lloyd Jones go. Hopefully he will sign a contract with us, but i can see a Championship Club picking him up. He is certainly good enough for the Championship.

Whilst Jones has been terrific this season, an advantage of our lowly status is potentially, if a good player leaves, there will still be better players out there. Not saying we will get them, and I'd like Jones to stay but none of our players would be classed as irreplaceable.

I don’t know. He’s 29 years old and hasn’t played above the third tier in his career (save four appearances several years ago). I think his market will be top League One to mid-Championship clubs so I don’t think we’d be competing with recently relegated Championship teams or those with big wallets and/or Premier League ambitions (basically the clubs that could massively outspend us).

It’s easy for me to spend someone else’s money, but I would make him the most lucrative offer possible. Much like CBT, Dobson and May - if we lose Jones it will be very hard to (and costly) to replace him.

I think 90% of Championship clubs will be able to offer better terms than we can unless we intend to really push the boat out on wages which is unlikely. I think he’s already had Championship interest. I’d be shocked if he doesn’t depart this window.

I mean if I’m being honest, even if we could match the Championship money, he’d still be getting offered Championship football if he moved to a team that was safe from relegation. Charlton can’t guarantee that by any stretch of the imagination (“please sign for us so we don’t end up in League Two” doesn’t have the same ring to it!).

Just so sick of losing key players all the time and replacing them with inferior quality.

they're not irreplaceable, but also in recent years we've not been able to let key players go and then replace them immediately
  • Wycombe sit in an automatic promotion place and get crowds of not much more than 5,000.
    A very small club.
Can’t see him going there however if a lower championship club eg Preston come in with a bid that would test the clubs resolve . I still back the owners at the moment.

I back the owners too. It’s just that they have appointed a SMT to run the day to day stuff and hire, fire and recruit players and I don’t see much to be optimistic about them.
  • Shite last season. Very good this season (made me eat a bit of humble pie there!). A bit fragile with injuries, but definitely worth another contract with us. Id say top league one is his limit IMHO. Be amazed if championship clubs would be queuing up for him in Jan or the summer really, but stranger things have happened. Id like us to offer him something as he has been a good influence on the back three this season and both Gillesphey and Mitchell look better players when he's alongside them. As always money talks though.

Problem was we only offered him 2 years. Why? I can only think there was a medical issue when he signed, because frankly he was pants when he first played and only came into form in 2nd half of season. He had a groin injury before he signed, something that won't stop you playing but could explain his slow turning circle and lack of pace until he mended. Not a medical no-no.
  • Or maybe he only wanted a two year deal as it left him free renegotiate a new deal with us or someone else sooner.
