Referee should get suspended for that call in the City game right at the end.
Saw Grealish through on goal so called it back to stop him scoring. Farcical.
UAE cant have paid the referee enough this week
Very intelligent input as usual.
No need to be a prick SELR
You've been suggesting all season that Man City have been getting favourable calls from referees, because they've been working out in the Middle East, and so causing a conflict of interest.
A gooner being a prick? Well I never.
You would have thought he'd be absolutely delighted it got pulled up!
Sometimes you want a bit of sporting integrity. Not watching the ball break the defensive line so immediately blow up to keep it 3-3.
Referee has made the mistake to blow his whistle too quickly... thats it.
Even the poor bloke has probably realised his error, and didnt need half the City squad in his face as a result.
Isn't the first, or last time it'll happen
Player makes a mistimed tackle and gets sent off he misses 3 games.
Referee makes a mistake that potentially changes the entire result, back next week and opposition manager banned because he's immune from criticism. Just referee things.
What happens when all the Referees are Suspended... Who takes charge of the games?
You think it was acceptable the City players getting in his face? - Because that'll happen up and down the country, and less referees will now progress in the game, because they don't get the same sort of protection.
Oh... But foreign refs!! - Until they make mistakes that aren't acceptable either...
What possible downside is there to having foreign refs? It’s something I honestly can’t get my head around.
I've no issue with foreign referees, but what happens when they make the same mistakes, or worse that the current lot are making? - Whats the new solution then?
The attitude towards them on here, is they'll sort out all the problems, but they're still human... There will still be the element of Human Error - Still havent heard the resolution to that when it happens.
Starting to think this could be Arsenal's year if they can keep Saliba and Rice fit.
City seem to be struggling defensively and they haven't replaced Gundogan. I know they have De Bruyne to come back but no team has ever won 4 in a row so history is against them.

The idea is that by having better referees the number of incidents are reduced. Not 'foreign' - better. There's no reason why the Premier League can't just pluck the best team of Serie A refs or La Liga refs because we have the funds to do so. Add them on top of the Premier League ones and we've got a decent pool of A-tier referees instead of relying on some C-level refs because they're English and mates with PGMOL.
Currently every single game there are glaring errors made by referees because they have complete job security and immune from criticism.
Would a player play at 100% if they know they're guaranteed a starting place no matter how they perform?

That's making the assumption that the Serie A or La Liga wont kick up a stink if we try to take their Referees
Your comments are fair enough, about how more competition could improve the quality
However it could also result in more baffling decisions, referees under pressure not to be dropped, which results in them being more rash, you talked about a player getting a three match ban for a mistimed tackle, how often is that as a result of not wanting to be at fault for losing the game, and ultimately being dropped themselves?
Yes the Referee will be suspended for X amount of games, rather than getting another game like the Footballer will do when receiving a Red Card - But it'll still be that game impacted as a result.
None of that will take away the Human Error from officiating though will it.
Unfortunately its a bit like the play acting that got mentioned on another Thread
Its a shame it doesn't get called out more, by the Commentators who instead go with the approach of: "Well he had every right to go down" - Same with surrounding the referee, not once will you ever hear the Commentator saying its wrong.
If we want better / more referees in this country, the attitude towards them needs to change. Where is the incentive to become a Referee now, every decision you make in your job can be analysed down to the finest detail, then you've got the horror stories that go on in the lower leagues - Oh but its fine, because the big clubs do it... So can we.

Mistakes will happen, I’m perfectly ok with that. What blows my mind is making a decision to not have the best staff available based on nothing other than where they are born.

I agree entirely about how refs are treated, but they have the power to stop it, they themselves choose to not get tough in dissent.
The referee that did the first England match last month was appalling, so it's not as if foreign referees are always better. Indeed watching international tournaments, it's not as if our top refs are obviously any worse than every other country's.
Having watched that incident again more than several times, I'm not convinced Grealish scores from where the ref blew up. There's no doubting he should have let play continue to give him the chance to but Davies had already closed on him and Royale would have put on the after burners. Thats the one main reason why Ange is persisting with Royale at CB, because he's the only one available with pace. The referee certainly made a mistake but I can see his logic. It was just a genuine mistake.
It doesn't help that he was the ref in the Spurs v Liverpool game so all the Bin Dippers and Blue Mancs are claiming conspiracy theories of the ref being a secret Spurs fan.
Its a shame that one decision overshadowed what was an absolute barn stormer of a PL game.
Citteee/Spurs .. at the time I thought the ref called back the advantage as Grealish was offside .. haven't seen replay since the game finished, was he offside Whatever, a great game showing why English top level football is (or certainly can be) so exciting and popular

They're not immune from criticism - they get deluged They are immune from any real accountability however. Haaland probably shouldn't get away with bawling at Simon Hooper like that, despite the legitimacy of his complaint. Hooper on the other hand gets away scot free, by any tangible measure, despite probably changing the outcome of the match. Hooper's decision wasn't a mistake. He saw the foul on Haaland, he saw Haaland regain his balance, he watched the ball played over the top, then put the whistle back in his mouth and blew up. He made a conscious decision to wait for any possible advantage as Haaland played on, the accruing advantage becomes obvious to everyone so then he stops play. That's not a mistake, that's a choice. He'll never have to say why he chose what he did and PGMOL will back him regardless, it's a closed shop. He's not even being 'rested' for a week, he's officiating again midweek i.e. he's Teflon and that's wrong. My money's on he was knackered and couldn't face legging it 60 yards to keep up with play. He's inadequate and he's not alone. He got rested earlier in the season for shafting Wolves at Old Trafford. A tremendous match of terrific attacking and dodgy defending has been completely overshadowed by the interference of a buffoon. The PGMOL stock of officials is not nearly up to the standard required in (any) PL games and it is ruining the product, add in the dribbling incoherence when those same unaccountable dolts use VAR and the top level of English football is a pitiful fiasco. When we consider how furiously avaricious everybody is at EPL and FA it is baffling that they side idly by and allow their cash cow to be badly butchered by the hired help.
Football does not really have an "advantage" rule the way that other games such as rugby do.
Once a ref has "let the play continue", he is not really allowed to call the foul even if the other team nick the ball and score a goal. In rugby a ref lets an advantage last until attacking team lose the ball.
My feeling is that the ref was momentarily willing to let play go but panicked when he saw it was quite possible that Spurs would intercept Haaland's pass and be in a good position to attack the City goal. But by then it would be too late bring play back.
I believe refs should be told that they CAN let play continue for a substantial time and still bring play back for the foul after an attack breaks down.
I've no issue with foreign referees, but what happens when they make the same mistakes, or worse that the current lot are making? - Whats the new solution then?

So what? European Courts will favour free movement of labour. Creating a marketplace where the average wage of referees will rise due to competition can only be a positive to entice people into the career.
Potentially retired players may be more willing if they know the salary is decent and the job security is higher than going into coaching or management. A potential training course or sanction for a match or two pales in comparison to a sacking due to poor performance that managers receive.
The issue with tackling behaviour is that referees have zero accountability so players feel the unfairness when these bad decisions are made. There is no post-match fallout from the incident, it's just a 'shut up and never mention it again' attitude from PGMOL.
Grovelling apologies aside, there's no indication that PGMOL and refs are trying to get better at their jobs, they're clearly content to keep ticking along while games are ruined due to poor officiating.

Just because Simon Hooper is from Wiltshire and hates Northerners and had pictures of Glen Hoddle on his bedroom wall; no one should jump to conclusions about any bias 🙄
It was a bizarre incident and either the ref was unsighted or realized that Grealish is skilful but slow and rarely outpaces a defender BUT he may well have been fouled(most fouled player in Prem?) if Defender didn't make a clean tackle.
It was a great game and I was cheering on Spurs who just kept going for it. Really not sure which coaching videos and manuals that Ange learnt from but it's great to watch even if it's looks crazy to have such a high line 😂 against Man City when you have got it back to 3-3 but they are so brave and a brilliant point for Spurs.

Apparently Nottingham Forest have the largest pitch which i would never have guessed at all.
