The Payne criticism is sometimes over the top but most is spot on. He's a trier and he never hides but at the moment he is 'filling in'. We can all see that he isn't a forward that will hold the ball up or be a threat in front of goal but at the moment it's him or Kirk and hopefully by the 1st of September it will be neither.
What is he then? A wide/floating attacking role, and being a goal threat are what he surely was signed to be
The attacking toothlessness can be explained by the lack of a strike partner for May.
I'm not sure what the excuse is though for the defensive ineptitude. That second half really wasn't good enough at the back, and it wasn't so much individual errors today, as horrible team defending, which is more worrying.
Agreed - a tired 5ft 4in Alfie May looked so much more effective when he had Kanu alongside. He has to play in a two upfront to be effective.
Played some good stuff in the first half but it was clear we were unlikely to score and think Bristol knew that hence their approach
Jack Payne was taken from League 2 and he is out of his depth at this level
I said last season we should have brought Wollacott back after his injury. Still don't rate AMB and can't see us going up with him (parrys ball, poor distribution and slow to kick out when we need to)
Finally we need to sack set piece coach. Saturday and tonight were all awful. Corners had no purpose and free kicks wasted.
Need 3 points on Saturday or we will be chasing the pack and cursing our slow start come April......
Kanu is 18, if we were doing it properly we shouldn’t really be seeing him feature for another 12-18 months. It worked tonight but a kid who is clearly raw shouldn’t be being into a pressurised situation with such expectations
I agree, and yet he rose the occasion. Perhaps he’s the sort of player who thrives with a bit of pressure. I’d all but written him off, but there’s definitely a player there.
May's shot goes in we are 2-1 up and at least get a point. Hearing the critics on here slagging off Ness is typical. 21 year old who is still learning.
I have been about the only person on here supporting Daniel Kanu and it was suggested he should go out on loan to a national League club ! Looks like our best striker until we get another one in and Leaburn get back and fit.
Gutted for George Dobson who showed he can pass the ball as well as tackle and thank fuck we didn't take the advise of some on here who wanted him sold after having a few quiet games at the end of last season.
May, must have a partner who plays close like Kanu did when he came on. Alfie May will come good but can't find his goal scoring boots even when he does get a decent ball to his feet.
We had 4 players cramping up tonight including the impressive Edun and Jones. How were we going to hit the ground running with about half the squad not at the required fitness levels because of injuries or not having the required pre season ?
Payne and May could be the strikers/forwards for a hobbit 11 but it won't work in League 1.
There were positives in our play but weren't good enough in both boxes for the full duration of the game.
The 10/15 mins after we went 1-0 down were absolutely pathetic. Could and should’ve been 3 or 4. No idea why May smacked it so hard when he hit the post
Trying too hard maybe? You can see how desperate he is to score. Hopefully gets some composure when the first one goes in.
I’m fed up with sponge foot shooting. I’m glad he gave it some. He’s the 42 goal striker, we’re not.
I didn't realise side footing the ball was considered sponge footing. Thierry Henry not as good as I thought.
Not sure what you mean. I didn’t mention side footing?
Can't sleep as I am so wound up about tonight's result. I wasn't there so can't comment on the performance but this seems like the same as last season, and the one before that. I live in hope that we can recruit some decent players to give us a lift but can't see it in all honesty. Another frustrating and disappointing year awaits I fear.
I'm guessing there'll be plenty of negative posts here tonight so I'm going to briefly try to give some balanced views as someone who says what she sees regardless of formations etc.
Not one player in a red shirt didn't give their all tonight. Whether that's not enough, that's what I saw.
Dobbo, Ness, Edun, Corey BT were stand outs for me. Dobbo wouldn't look out of place in a Championship team, Ness looks stronger than last season, Corey has gained more confidence & is more willing to take on his man & put a decent cross into the box, Tayo was pretty outstanding in his first start. In addition, young Daniel will develop nicely given the opportunity but not over played too soon...all in my opinion of course.
But with one wage now off the books with Egbo's departure, I think we should pay up Chuks' contract and take the loss in order to bring in 1 or 2 experienced players to bolster this young squad - one of them to add some much needed support for Alfie & Daniel.
Yes, tonight's result & the manner in which it came about was heartbreaking for both the faithful AND the players, not forgetting the gaffer who must be wondering what more he can do with the squad he has at this moment in time. To see 2 young guns on the pitch tonight who played in the U18 final we attended in Barnsley a few months ago is quite remarkable. Add to these, 2 others in Kanu & Ness who are barely out of that age category ......I don't believe too many L1 clubs find themselves in this position. Yes, it's fantastic to have a wealth of home grown youngsters in the squad but are we expecting too much from them week after week?
Let's see whether the new owners view the situation & the way forward on the same way. Surely they must feel that Chuks is a millstone with no positive outcome likely for our club, sad though that might be. Maybe it would be a relief for the guy himself to have his future more clearly defined so that he would be able to re assess his options. Only time will tell...but as far as the transfer window is concerned, that time's running out.
Action is required sooner rather than later if our club is to follow the path that they clearly intend it to take..onwards & upwards.
Our stand out player again was CBT. We have not had a decent winger for years but last season when fit and so far this season he has been outstanding. Barely gets a mention on this thread. Weird.
Probably because I suspect you’re the only one who thought he was our stand out player Jon!
Dobson (once again) was our best player and Edun had a very good game. CBT was fairly mid range imo
I think mid range is a little unfair. The vast majority of our attacking threat was via his runs down the left. The problem was we weren't getting much of an end product out of them, partly because he didn't always make the best choice of final ball, but also because the players getting on the end of them didn't make decent contacts. And that shot that rebounded off Payne's heels probably summed up both their games.
T. S Elliot said, April is the Cruelest month but not at Charlton where August is definitely the Cruellest month. Both Adkins and Garner believe that and unless a couple of experienced players show up soon so will Dean Holden.
I thought Michael Hector was going to be the rock at the back and Jones, Ness, Thomas where going to fight over the other One or two CB positions depending whether we play 3 or 4 at the back but that doesn't seem to be the case and Ness who played well for most of the night gets slagged off for a 100th minute lack of concentration.
I saw AMB do two goal stopping saves but in the waste lands of CL you take stick for your good save despite the fact the defenders were slow to react after his good save.
Expected it to be difficult, we’re not in good nick fitness and injury wise but we’ve got to come off that pitch with something.
If it’s not points, it’s at least managed minutes to be a step closer to full fitness and a full performance level.
Instead we’ve run three players into the ground! Camara was fatigued after 30 mins, passing started to drop off, he then ends up in a two man midfield covering more ground and playing 100mins.
Anderson was feeling his hamstring for about 10 mins before he came off.
Jones was feeling his quad before half time, comes off limping and massaging his same quad.
We had options on the bench to replace all three and avoid the risk, who also need minutes to get up to speed themselves!!
We’ve got a bit of work to do before we’re in fighting shape to make the most of what we have. Risking creating problems, prolonging getting to our fighting best doesn’t make sense!
Zero points, 3 big players close to the mark and minimal time for others in need.

CBT won man of the match , the centre circle lounge does a poll after the game , so they may be all a bit boozed /full up on food .
Brought a mate and his two kids along and he fancied 2-2 or 1-2 rovers after I’d said we’re pony and they’re draw specialists . 2-2 was 15 to 1 and 1-2 11 to 1 …. I gave him the 11 to 1 🙄 and he had a score on it ffs
A vintage, Charlton have the poniest footballing supporters in the world , crossbar challenge . £10,500 the fella could have won and he dribbles it along the floor to the bottom corner , ridiculous
I saw the first half via stream before falling asleep at half time and missing the entire second half (I’d had a couple of drinks!). Woke up wondering why the Valley looked so dark behind Curbs and Brown. Took a good few seconds to realise what had happened. I thought we looked ok in the first half but with the obvious limitations that everything of any note was produced via CBT and we can’t play one up top with a midget on his own. Cant comment on why it all fell apart second half but I just despair at how we can yet again be so half cooked two weeks into the season. Our requirements have been obvious for all to see and why we can’t buy a player who is not recovering from injury I simply cannot fathom. Even if we magically get it right in the market over the next fortnight (don’t bet your mortgages on it folks!) we are behind the game yet again. Mid table beckons unless we have more major injuries to key players which doesn’t beggar thinking about.
Edit. Just watched the highlights. Time for Isted methinks.
My favourite part was when we tried the Peterborough short corner that they did against us 4-5 times without us inexplicably being able to stop it despite it being simple to do so. Bristol cut it out first time like a properly drilled and switched on team should do.
Holden needs to sort it out.
Bristol created loads and that wasn't from just smashing balls into the box from all over the place to no one like we are apparently set up to do with midget striker. Honestly losing patience as we did not deserve to win yesterday. Yes we could have scored a couple more but Bristol could have score more than a couple more.
On the positive side Edun looks class and pleased for Kanu
Arguably we didn't deserve to lose (again) so will just look at positives and negatives.
Positives - work rate high - pleased for Kanu - not only the goal but he showed what he can do for the team - Edun is a proper player - Dobbo looks even better than ever - CBT a constant threat and looks fitter - Anderson & Assimwe still improving
Negatives - fitness is a problem for a lot (not all) of the players (in stark contrast to Bristol Rovers) - Concentration lapses (maybe because of lack of fitness) have cost us goals - the central defenders (who, for the most part, had good games) were guilty of this as well as Camara - Payne has had many chances but simply is not at this level - I don't want to sling childish criticism/name throwing at him because he is an honest tryer and a better footballer than 99.9% of us would ever be/have been - but he needs to be playing at a lower level. I doubt we'll see him start for Charlton again. - We didn't create enough chances and only sporadically play with the right intensity (again because of fitness?) - of the chances we did create May should have done better. Particularly the one that hit the post which just could have been slid either side of the keeper - As well as Assimwe's progressed, the team needs another, more experienced right back/RWB - We saw what can happen with a pairing up front when Kanu came on, the need for a heavy duty striker is URGENT!!!!!!
A vintage, Charlton have the poniest footballing supporters in the world , crossbar challenge . £10,500 the fella could have won and he dribbles it along the floor to the bottom corner , ridiculous
Wait till you see my attempt........when I get asked it will be lottery money
Waited until this morning to post to see how I would feel after a few hours had passed.
Still angry at yet another referee not doing his job. As clear a red card as you will ever see. Why is that crucial incident absent from the highlights?
I don't watch often but agree with everything @Fanny Fanackapan posted having seen last night's performance.
I was impressed by the new signings and younger players who've emerged from our excellent academy but I'll single out Dobson as my stand out performer on the night though.
Our loss of confidence and evident fragility after conceding was alarming and we got some lucky breaks in not falling further behind after. Did well to get level and took it to them pushing for that winner, which made the finish all the more gut wrenching and undeserved for the collective effort put in. However, until we strengthen, I fear we're more likely to keep losing games than win them due to the lack of goal threat.
We're a frustrating Club to support. Now the tone for the season is being set, I can't see crowds returning in great numbers to suffer more underachievement. What we need is a run of winning games and that has to start on Saturday, but I won't be surprised if it doesn't such is our luck.
Very similar game against them last year - all over them first half then they started playing second. Kanu had to start up top with Nay Saturday - even given the situation, ridiculous to play May as a lone striker - Payne needs to be put firmly in the departure lounge with Kirk and DJ - owners need to hurry up and get the cavalry in - still think we will be ok with the right signings - Edun looks great and second half we saw what Camará can do - will judge it all once the window is shut - please don’t dissapoint us SE7 - can’t take another season like the last one
Arguably we didn't deserve to lose (again) so will just look at positives and negatives.

We 100% deserved to lose. Bristol could and probably should have been 3 or 4 up before we even scored.
