Rovers actually scored their first against the run of play and we equalised against the run of play. After the first ten mins Charlton dominated the next 60, we started to look leggy after the first goal and when Bristol went to four in midfield. After that May should have scored and their should have been a sending off. With all that said, we dominated without threatening the goalkeeper and the two goals conceded were really poor, I actually felt we looked worse when Jones went off and the changes in midfield did not stem the tide. We need to get rid of McGrandles if we are not prepared to play him and Kirk for the same reason, which will we be bloody difficult because he isn't good enough to earn that wage anywhere else. Getting rid of Egbo was a good move but more of the dead wood needs moving on if there is to be movement in.
  • And that, my Charlton Life friends, is why I haven’t committed to a season ticket this year. I went to the game but on that performance, we’re not good enough to compete. That performance had mid table mediocrity written all over it. If we continue to play like that, I’m bailing out mid season. Poor …
  • I'd rather we'd started out winning all our games. For the long term though a few early losses should enable us to work out the ambition of the new owners. It's clear the squad needs strengthening. Let's see what they do.

I must see a different game from a lot of you. I saw the same game as Fanny and Bailey.

I guess coming at it hoping for the best rather than wanting to say "I told you so" having been negative before a ball has been kicked might be the difference?

We could have been two up before they scored @Jac_52 - but let's ignore that, eh...

I think the game demonstrated what we already knew. Rovers were a competent side and that is probably good enough at the moment to stop us with a bit of luck. The reason is not because we haven't got good players, we had some very nice passages of play and slick passing that was good on the eye, but when we are in that killer position we delay, make a poor pass, have a crappy shot etc... It is quite simply because the team lacks goals. Could it find them with an energetic target man to play with May. At this level I think it could but we have played 3 games and there is no sign of him.

A positive was Kanu and players can make jumps. If you count the Aberdeen game, that was his 3rd goal in 4 games with only one start. Holden absolutely has to start him on Saturday but we have to hope it works as there will then be no other scoring options on the bench.
  • We're not rotating Kanu with May anyway so may as well give it a shot.
  • Until we get a decent forward to play along side May we are flogging a dead horse. We have to pay serious money to get one who isn't available cheap because he's injury prone.
  • Our stand out player again was CBT. We have not had a decent winger for years but last season when fit and so far this season he has been outstanding. Barely gets a mention on this thread. Weird.
Probably because I suspect you’re the only one who thought he was our stand out player Jon!

Dobson (once again) was our best player and Edun had a very good game. CBT was fairly mid range imo
CBT won man of the match , the centre circle lounge does a poll after the game , so they may be all a bit boozed /full up on food .
I reckon he won it because he was (as usual) the biggest threat, and the polls tend to go for an attacking player.
Dobbo was startlingly good in the first half. Proper championship quality, and his passing and skill on ball have moved up a level. Superb performance.
He could, and possibly should, have won the award, and so could Tayo Edun who shaded it for me over the full match, as Dobbo has a quieter game in the second half.

  • I sound like a broken record and maybe I am looing at it through too much rose-tinted glasses, but I think there are promising signs, but the squad is thread bare and needs at least 4 in ASAP.

Payne is not good enough said it after Posh I would rather Kanu start with Payne on the bench, Kanu offered more and at least occupied a defender.

Think Karoy and Nathan are great prospects but can see don’t want to rely on them as starters all the time just yet. Need another RWB and CM who are better than what we have and let them come on or start the odd game and learn. I think they both have big futures though and they are well down the list of issues we have in the squad to sort.

We also obviously need another forward who can hold the ball up and link up play. Poor Alfie must be so annoyed he needs help from someone to do that to allow him to play of the shoulder. He is showing good signs and think with someone up with him the goals will come.

Would like another CB as well. Been impressed with Jones and have a fully fit Hector to come back but not a big fan of Thomas and Ness is still learning.

Egbo going out is good as it is one of the ones I wanted out if Payne, Kirk, DJ and McGrandels can follow soon that would be best for all.

The next few weeks are massive now for our season – Get it right I can still see as up there challenge and like the 2018/19 team get better as the season goes on.
  • I guess your view of last nights performance depends on how you view the current state of the team/club.
Yes Charlton should 100% at least aspire to be a Championship club of the current Millwall standard. But you can’t do that with a squad of mid table L1 players
The team we put out last night put on a relatively entertaining game against another solid L1 side, end of.
In both teams there were some stand outs and in both some absolutely passengers.
We all know what needs to be done it’s been said enough times, but will/can the current ownership, who ever they are, step up. I doubt that.
I think the best we can hope for is that we will slowly evolve, with youth and the odd good signings, but of course this is trusting to luck and that approach can easily see us go in the opposite direction
  • Our attacking threat isn’t bothering me as much as our lack of defensive organisation at the moment

Peterbro and last night we arguably deserved more from attacking possession and that will come with returning players and hopefully replacements from the 3 in the squad last night that need to move on

But I’m not convinced CB is on Holdens wish list and going on last night that might be a concern unless he can get Hector playing 35+ games this season

And I always think you need a top top keeper to get promotion, think Kiely in 99/00, we have two good goalkeepers but not elite at this level.

Small margins as could easily be sitting here with 7 points instead of 3, need a win and hopefully an Alfie May goal by any means on Saturday
  • Can’t knock the effort of the players, they clearly are trying their best and the only luck we seem to get is bad luck. Having said that you can improve your chances of good luck by taking decent corners and free kicks - ours are awful.
If we had Rak Saki playing on Saturday and last night we wouldn’t have lost either.

I’m not 100% convinced our set up is right.
I’m not an expert on formations (I still like the old ‘W’ formation with five forwards, two of whom drop back a bit), but in the second had every time Rovers moved forward with the ball they seemed to have loads of options, including the long ball over the top. They looked a threat every time they played one.
It’s either a set up/formation issue, or (and I hate to ask it), have we failed to replac Inniss properly, as his aerial dominance is missed.
  • Curbs says no fast fix and it’s going to take time
Just having a strike partner for May would solve a lot of our attacking issues. And it doesn't even have to be a marquee signing, you could see the difference it made when Kanu came on.

Would resolve some of the defensive issues as well as it would stop us losing the ball again and again from a punt up that poor Alfie cant win.

  • We have no style of play other than passing to CBT and lumping it over the top to May and Jack Payne

  • There are positives to take from our game just now
Our pace intensity & drive going forward has definitely improved but our defence is letting us down they could have easy have put 5 or 6 passed us last night
Why isn't it being drummed into them how to mark pick up runners or close down players all the time this goes on we will leak easy goals
& If we keep dropping points at home the numbers will drop again
  • All I am going to say is that I don't ever want to see Payne and May as a front pairing again.
  • Holden out.
  • There will be reaper cushions.
  • PWR but from what (admittedly little) I’ve seen we are nowhere near playoff material.

The last time we reached the playoffs we had a spinal core of Pearce, Bauer, Sarr, Beilik, Cullen, Aribo, Taylor and (for part of season) Grant.

    This year we have Dobson.
We also had a pretty dire start that season too... W1 | D2 | L2 in our first five games.

We had a bench no one was happy with, whilst in the game against Peterborough we couldn't take any chances.

at Posh, injury time winner, v Pirates, injury time winner .. the story of us conceding late late goals goes on, not just this squad, squads over time, remarkable and very very annoying

Yesterday's team ? .. why no Thomas and/or Hector to start .. why no Kanu partnering May when it's obvious the latter is too lightweight up front alone ? .. and yes, I know we still have the ever ongoing injury problems .. why was no experienced keeper signed over the close season ?

And just a wish, may the dirty fat  bastard who i m o deliberately injured Leaburn at Welling, break his neck and suffer in agony a s a p .. I thank you
  • Our stand out player again was CBT. We have not had a decent winger for years but last season when fit and so far this season he has been outstanding. Barely gets a mention on this thread. Weird.
What did he create though? Beats a man but then his crosses or shots are usually wayward. He's good for us but 'outstanding' is a stretch
  • As nice as it is to reminisce about how we had a bad August in 18/19 and got promoted, we've also had other seasons with bad Augusts and finished 12th or worse.
