  • If we're going for an experienced manager who knows the division then I'd rather go for someone who's achieved promotion.

Appleton’s record as a manager is shockingly awful - I’d take the Cowleys over him any day
Their stats can't be hidden but for every manager there's the context behind them to consider. If only managers with high win percentages were offered work, he'd be one of many permanently unemployed.

Including interim positions, he's managed  or assisted in all four divisions and has been moderately successful in L1 with both Oxford and Lincoln without getting promoted out of it. I don't think he is poorly regarded within the industry though.

Whoever gets it I wish well and I won't be "done" with the Club, but I can't see him finding London and us an attractive proposition. I think it unlikely he'll take it if offered, but it depends how desperate for work he is I suppose.
Going for Appleton not only ruins the interminable joke, but underscores we're a shit club in a shit league.

Powell won't come, so for me it's really only Moore out of the names mooted that shows any ambition, and he strikes me as the sort of person who'd get the club. Maybe Nathan Jones - I do think he'd get us promoted, but showed his limitations in his last role.

In a strange way, a lot of the people who don't want the job are the ones we need. It is possible, even likely, there is a gem out there but I would say the best 'interview' in terms of finding him is seeing somebody do the job and all those applying for our job will have suceeded and failed. That is why I favour giving Pearce a few games. Not because I know he will be a success, but he might be and if he isn't it is easier to go to option B. A new manager that fails will cost a lot of money.

It also shows what a good job the previous Southampton manager was doing!

I wouldn't have powell or bowyer purely because you should never go back

    my shortlist
    moore
    jones
    cowley
  • My shortlist is very short

    Moore or
    Richardson

    Thats it.

Whoever it is needs to be backed with decent experienced players and time.
We can't expect any long term success if we are constantly churning the squad with 10+ players each season.
Every year you have to expect that 1 or 2 of the successful players will be sold on. Will that money be reinvested?
It worries me that Powell turned us down because of the 'plan'.

    This.

It used to be that a summer "rebuild" would consist of replacing a couple of players retiring, a couple coming to the end of their contracts and 1 or 2 being sold.

Now every summer we have to replace half the squad as 4 or 5 are out of contract, 5 loanees go back and we move on a few who are now out of favour.

    It really can't continue.

Richardson or Moore for me. Not convinced we'll get someone that's already in work and think Nathan Jones will hold out for championship interest.

If you watched the game yo can see why .. one trick pony once we combatted that , Fleetwood was non existent
  • Do we know for sure that Chris Powell turned the role down “because of the plan”. Where’s that bit come from ? I’d have thought it more likely he wasn’t interested because he’s already got the tee shirt and probably after his associations with England and Spurs can have some very attractive coaching options without the hassle of tin pot club management.
  • Scott brown available after being sacked by Fleetwood
Sacking a manager two days after the window closes seems even more stupid than sacking a manager with a week to go!

As I said a while ago, Darren Moore is the only candidate that does not divide the fans.
on that basis alone he should be given the job
I don't really care if the new manager divides the fans as long as he gets us playing well and in the promotion mix. Let's face it, the fans don't really need an excuse to be divided on much.

I'd think there are more than a few Charlton people with a direct line to Powell

    2/5 with some bookies.
He has been muted for the Hibs job.

Rather Appleton than Powell or Bowyer
I appreciate I'm feeding a WUM here, but, why? What has Appleton done to be considered over powell or bowyer?

I would say as a guess (can't be bothered to research) that in two full seasons of managing us in l1, we got promoted twice with those as our manager.

as said above, im not a believer in managerial 2nd attempts but would have either of those in a heartbeat over below average Appleton.

I am always half glass full, last to turn against managers, players and owners, I believe that Kirk will come good!!!!! But Appleton!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Plan?
These guys sacked Holden without a plan anywhere within a thousand miles as evidenced by their (reported) pathetic grubbing around to find a Holden replacement.

Didn't Curbs try to sign him way back when. Unfinished business 🤔 My guess is that Appleton might end up at Fleetwood now, so they'll steel him out from under our noses 😉
