  • Our current owners can still potentially make a return by flipping the club if we gain promotion to the Championship, even if we remain loss-making, because other investors may say, look at Brentford or now Ipswich. The PL is now a possibility.

I genuinely can't see anyone all of a sudden paying £20m+ for us if we got promoted this season and then add on the costs each year when we don't go up,  in our present no ground/training ground ownership state .

Ipswich have spent real money to get where they are ... not minged about trying to save pennies .
Everyone's trying to be the next Brentford but they're the outlier
But I'll wager, a year ago, you also couldn't see anyone paying Tommy ÂŁ12m for us as a League 1 club.

I'm not sure what bullshit I'm lapping up, but our recruitment continues to be a major concern for me given how many players signed in the last five years have failed to impress, some of whom did themselves no favours last night.
And yet we are starting to get posters saying "wait until January when we ship out the useless ones and bring in replacements..."

Have people not learnt anything yet ?

We can't simply "ship out" players we dont want - players are under contract & we have to find other teams to buy or loan them, which we found pretty hard last transfer window.

Then there are the owners. I haven't seen anything yet that makes me think they are going to spend enough £££ so that we have a capable squad.

As for recruitment.....I give you Andy Scott.

I cannot believe the anti Appleton bollocks on here.
Yes a very poor display by 11 fringe players or coming back from injury. They should have been able to see off CV comfortably and if Kirk hadn't been so (typically) pathetic in front of goal, they would have.
    But put it in context.
We played a good Wigan side off their own park for 80 minutes last Tuesday - one of the best displays since we pissed all over Forest in the first half at The Valley in the Championship.
All that matters this season is the League and if yesterday equipped Appleton with the case to demand serious turn out of crud and strengthening of the squad in January, then it's all to the good.
Personally I couldn't give a flying **** if we go through to Round 2 or not. Nothing matters but a promotion challenge.
No chance. I don’t care about Appleton one way or another - he’s just the latest in a line of nonentities who will move on quickly. But we don’t have the players, the culture or the commitment in the squad to get promoted.

Airman, that being the case please give me an alternative, because I fail to see one and I also fail to see how anyone, even with the best of intentions, turns this club around.

I'll take it there is no alternative then Airman. Please do us a favour then, try to make your comments balanced, I don't remember you coming on here declaring the first half at Wigan, the best 45 mins we've seen this season but you are straight in with 'we're all going to hell' comments after the reserves got held at home by a team eight divisions below. Since 1968 I've seen shit players, shit managers and worse than that, shit owners, but the one thing I've had since 1968 is hope and if you haven't got hope you've got dick all.
We all have hope, hope that SE7 sell up.
And the buyer is who ?
Somebody with ambition, which this lot don't have.
East Street investments are looking for a club !
So you really don't know do you, just an uninformed rant. Just scroll up or go through thousands of posts as to why nobody wants to invest in Charlton Athletic. The club is divorced from the ground, with a fifty mill price tag on it that is way above its current worth.Charlton are a first division club losing 7 million a year and even if they were to get promoted then they would lose just as much. With no guarantee of recovering the investment made, anyone with 'ambition' as you call it has enough brains to steer clear.
So SE7 are bloody stupid for taking things over then.

Yes, we maybe kicking the can down the road but that's where we are and your rant about getting rid of them for nobody doesn't make sense, somebody has to pay the bills and run the club, even if you don't like them.
  • I can’t be sure, but I don’t remember any of us on here saying we shouldn’t buy Charlie Kirk, before we start pointing fingers at the recruitment team.

@AFKABartram called it about right and very much against the tide when he  expressed reservations that despite his record at Crewe and age, no champ or prem clubs were sniffing round, which was true and quite telling as it turned out, saying he suspected he was a confidence player and warning others not to get too excited.  We didn't want to hear it at the time and did, well most.

Glad I didn’t go or watch it on tv - I’m done with reserve games dressed up as proper fixtures - I never watched reserve games when it was called the combination league and won’t watch them now so that rules out any cup games for me unless we reach the quarter finals in the fa cup or possibly the league cup - anything else, I’m not interested.
Even if you didn't want to go, surely you should have bought a ticket - otherwise how can you be a proper fan?

Nope - I’ve done my time with these games and won’t go to them any more - they r a piss take and it’s how football is now - I won’t go and then moan about it, I just don’t go
Excellent - does that mean that I no longer need to buy a season ticket (even if I can only go to about 5 home games a year) to be regarded as a proper fan, or is it just an exemption for you in relation to cup games (unless we get to the quarter final)?

I know, but it's fun highlighting it...
maybe fun for you but its very boring correcting people like you - you can only go to 5 games - why would you get a season ticket? please read what i said - if u can be bothered - and try to understand it before highlighting something and making yourself look stupid would be my advice

    A stopped clock.

    ;-)

    (Good call AFKA).
PS I do remember wondering if his success at Crewe wasn’t partly down to him combining well with his wing back. Which is a problem when you’re a club without proper wing backs.
  • Yes we played poorly but didn't lose; were we underestimating Cray Valley ? Yes we were. Scroll through their squad list and see how many of their players have had relative success with Crystal Palace, West Ham and even England youth teams. Now they are hardened (semi) pros and knew exactly how to play against  an 11 who had never played together before. What Apples must have worried about is what has happened to Ness and Anderson who were pulling up trees a few months ago.  They will be tough to beat on their own patch unless some of the regular starters are in the team. Will we win? Yes we will and then beat Gillingham.

  • Lets examine that starting 11

Walker - In Isted's absence, he's our No 2 keeper. If we can't play him against an 8th tier team, when can we play him?

Abankwah - Not a RB, but would Asiimwe or T Watson have been much different?
Ness - Wasn't everyone screaming for Hector to be dropped and Ness to replace him?
Thomas - Has been a regular at LB, so again perfectly reasonable to play him in his correct position
Edun - Our 1st choice LB coming back from injury. The perfect game for him to get some minutes

Anderson - Talented youngster, started the season well
McGrandles - Has done well under Appleton previously. A perfect opportunity to give him some minutes after his injury
Fraser - "The Scottish Pirlo". Was one of the 1st names on the teamsheet at the start of the season before his injury.

Kirk - The ideal opportunity to get some confidence into him
Tedic - Not been given a chance to play as a No 9, the perfect chance for him to get a goal or 2 and get some confidence
Chem - Many people have been questioning why he hasn't been in the matchday squads

It didn't work, but I can understand why Appleton picked that team. He would have learned a lot from yesterday, and not just about Kirk. Other players "failed the audition" while the lack of leadership in the first 11 is even worse in the reserve 11.
Thanks for posting and everything you say is true.
  • I've read numerous posters saying they don't know what has happened to Ness since 12 months ago.
He had a patella injury that kept him out for 5 months, have all these fans forgotten?

I don’t buy the excuse/angle from Appleton that the humiliation enabled him to learn stuff about our players so all is good then. Absolute crap to say he has only been here a short time and he is learning about our players. What does he do all week FFS?
He was presented with a Televised cup game at home against a team more than 100 places below us in the pyramid, and it was his decisions that have led to our humiliation.
Whoever appointed Appleton is also responsible.
    This.

For once I would have liked us to be on live tv smashing 7,8,9 goals past a hapless keeper.

But no, I get another woeful performance against a non league side. I was at Northwich Victoria. I was at the home quarter final tie against Wycombe (I know they weren't non-league but we were PL).  When will a manager take it seriously & show the tv masses that we have a team to be proud of.

Take it seriously like you did?
You chose not to attend a week ago, so you could eat a roast dinner at an allotted time.

Relative to league games, as reflected in the subsequent attendance figures for home fans.

Elfsborg, I would agree, but you and I both know the Duchatelet will never lower the price. I don't know what the terms of the lease are, but given inflation at the current levels his 50 mill price tag does have some deterioration over the next twelve years, my feeling is that Duchatelet has factored this in. I like to think that like a lot of businessmen he never expected the Ukraine war or indeed the Palestine/Israel conflict to continue to devalue his assets, both of these conflicts will continue to drive inflation for the considerable future. My point about your comments are that it's no good wanting these people out when the only people interested are the East Street investment type of owner, you may not like the current owners but they are a good deal better than ESI and might turn out better in the long term than Sandgaard. Let's hope that Duchatelet continues to see this particular asset, The Valley and Sparrows lane continue to devalue, and cuts his losses, sells at a reasonable price to owners committed to Charlton's future.

So if they didn't what do you think Sandgaard's Investment would have been this season ? Yes, we maybe kicking the can down the road but that's where we are and your rant about getting rid of them for nobody doesn't make sense, somebody has to pay the bills and run the club, even if you don't like them.
I'd hardly call it a rant.
Of course they will pay the bills, anyway, Dushitelet makes The Valley and Sparrows Lane more attractive price wise then this lot would not be with us, I would think.

Righto  @Bailey we have almost come together on our little exchange, let's leave it there eh?  Enjoy the rest of the day.

Yes we played poorly but didn't lose; were we underestimating Cray Valley ? Yes we were. Scroll through their squad list and see how many of their players have had relative success with Crystal Palace, West Ham and even England youth teams. Now they are hardened (semi) pros and knew exactly how to play against  an 11 who had never played together before. What Apples must have worried about is what has happened to Ness and Anderson who were pulling up trees a few months ago.  They will be tough to beat on their own patch unless some of the regular starters are in the team. Will we win? Yes we will and then beat Gillingham.

I suppose you could turn it around and ask why those Cray players are underperforming so much the rest of the time, that they're playing in the 8th tier!
