Well if we take a step back and assess those that gained promotion last season, all having smashed the league to pieces, Ipswich probably had by far the biggest investment and have been astounding again. Wednesday did the unthinkable in getting rid of Moore and haven't recovered. Plymouth I would say, have a budget similar to Charlton, are holding their own and I doubt they have spent big, so would be my pick for the best run club.

What is their secret? Maybe Scott should take a look.

This season’s over, no point throwing good money after bad. If there’s money available then I would invest it in the summer when it’ll go further.
That's exactly what "the club" will come out & say

have we ever brought in a worse collection of loanees than the last window? louis watson has been decent - the rest?
Even Watson has been somewhat disappointing. Has offered very little when used (albeit sparingly) in recent weeks.

    Was utter dogshit against Gills

    Penney, Kane and Kilkenny?

Had forgotten Kilkenny.  That is an unimaginably bad list of loanees that Scott has recruited when all put together:

Penny- now unemployed, one of the poorest players I have seen pull on the jersey.

Kane- now playing in front of 60 fans in Gibralter. Spent most of his with us injured, looked poor the brief moments he played.

Kilkenny- back at Bournemouth and not featuring, assume no one wanted him on loan this year.  Totally ineffectual for us.

Camara - came to us with a chronic recent injury record, spent almost his entire loan injured. Seems we may be stuck with him. Best case he gets fit quick but then he will go to the AfCON.and probably return injured anyway!

Abankwah - barely featured. Recalled early.

Tedic - a non entity. Will almost certainly be recalled.  No impact whatsoever.

Chem Campbell - has some skill and ability but Apples binned him completely for weeks and plays him in the wrong position.  Will at least have a career in professional football ahead of him.

L.Watson - decent enough but lightweight and for all his busyness he doesn't really create.  A good squad player.

Compare them to previous loanees like to JRS, Cullen, Beilik, Gallagher... It's night and day in both attitude and ability.
To be fair, you do get more bad loans than good ones. For every Cullen you have a David Davis, for every Bielik you get a Beram Keyal…for every JRS, an Andre Green.

In last 5 years, we’ve have 4 maybe 5 good loans.
  • Are you sure this balance of experience and youth is the best one to get us out of League 1?

Apologies for the format below, I'm not a techno person. These are the published EFL squad numbers for this season.

The Charlton in-squad players are Aneke, CBT, Dobson, Edun, Fraser, Hector, Jones, Kirk, May, McGrandles, Camara, Taylor, Tedic, T Thomas, L Watson, T Watson.

Abankwah and C Campbell are in the U21 number.

Our availability record for the experienced players (in-squad) list is poor as 25% have been out for a while and there's also Leaburn from the U21's who has been out too.

I think the budget probably needs adjusting to grow our in-squad numbers and would like to see that happen for next season. Although if the EFL rules allow it I'd also like to see it happen in January.

Whilst I agree, for 6 out of 8 to have zero impact and the other 2 to be squad level players with minimal impact themselves is dreadful.

I know I was a bit disingenuous lining them up against our best loanees of recent times but for every David Davis, Keyal and Green there is also a Jonny Williams or Elliot Lee.

5 loanees should imo see 1-2 top notch, 1-2 squad players and 1-2 flops.

Well I don’t want to bore people with it and there are no guarantees but we could have had Lewis bate for £2k a week - instead we took Watson for £500 a week - I know who has the bigger profile / pedigree
  • Nelson Abbey, Marcus Mcguane, Herbie Kane, Femi Azeez, Martial Godo & JCH are all out of contract in the summer. Davis Keillor-Dunn is contracted until summer 25 but playing in a division below.
Marc Leonard is one to keep tabs on, Brighton highly rate him but he’s only contracted until summer 25 currently.

Just a few I’ve been keeping an eye one and hope Andy Scott has been too.

  • What's happened to Terry Taylor? Is he still alive?
  • He’s settled into the injury suite quite nicely I reckon - be surprised if he plays a full season again if he sticks to the normal rehab programme

I did not check previous posts but my message to Andy Scott is simple, check the fucking injury history of anyone you bring in, you nob !  Glad I got that off my chest.
Perhaps the financial balance sheet is more important to him? ;)
  • Shouldn’t Scott be less present at our games and more out watching other teams players?
  • When is the next fans forum with Scott?

We are where we are because of Andy Scott. No tangible difference between this muppet running recruitment and Thomas Sandgaard's son. In fact I may be as bold to suggest Sandgaards son did a better job. I'll just mention Tedic, Penney, Walker and Camara. His appointment of Appleton the stand out candidate who's a wizz "on the grass" and specialises in "developing youth" I've seen no evidence of it. Our youth players have regressed and on the grass the starting 11 are struggling to string 2 passes together. Andy Scott is demonstrateably clueless. No sign of the 'winning mentality' he was waffling on about. Appleton and the players will be the fall guy's, but this clown owns the situation, he created it.
The problem with young players you have to bring them through no more than two at the time and you need the experienced players to help bring them on in that time. When you have them where you want them, then and only then can you bring more in. We have an issue where we play too many youngsters and they are not helped enough by the more senior players where we have too many softies that need help themselves.

He doesn't need to, I heard that he bought Martins black box
  • Andy Scott quotes...

"Dean left the role because we wanted to be successful this season, or give ourselves the best chance."

On Appleton:  "He developed young players and understood the style of play he wanted. He implemented it well. The top six is a realistic expectation for everybody."

“That’s my job now, to make sure we have the strong foundation built to get promoted and stay in the Championship and progress even further, challenge at the top of that.

We don’t want this to be a waste of a season. We want this to be a successful season. We felt making the decision when we did left Michael with plenty of games to be successful with a group we feel is a strong one in this league.

We can at least challenge at the top end of the league where we feel we should be with the squad we’ve put together.

“I will hold my hands up if something goes wrong. I don’t expect to get plaudits. I don’t want to be front and centre – doing interviews. I want to do my job and be judged on how the club performs.

So, Andy... You holding your hands up yet?

    Maybe now?

  • He was considered a disaster at Forest. IF the January window is a damp squib (Which given the owners  have NOT  said we have money to invest), and we have more lame duck and lacklustre signing, he perhaps should consider his position.

He don`t want to be front and centre - doing interviews. Not since he was sacked by Aldershot in his last managerial post. He likes calling the shots in a more comfortable backroom role, bringing the manager tools like Tedic and Abankwah while not getting players like Dobson and CBT signed. Yes, he should certainly consider his position.

Hands up, baby, hands up .....

  • Needs to go. Useless, especially if he chose Appleton.

I disagree. Whilst this season is likely over already, a few good signings could see us pick up some good results in the second half of the season and carry some momentum into next season.

A team finishing the season on a bit of a charge and getting a higher placed finish is also likely to attract better quality players in the summer than a side who plodded to 16th.
Agreed. Shows intent. Dobson and CBT more likely to stay. Most people say they wish business was done before pre-season starts - January is long before pre-season. Do it all next month!
  • There was time back at the start of January 2022 when we were above Bolton in the league. They went on to have a strong back end to the season with strong January recruitment. Will be many years until we finish above Bolton in the league.

We should certainly see the rest of this season as a building block for next season.
