Just looked it up, this would be the highest in Tests - it would be the joint 3rd highest first innings score to then go on to lose, and none of the other 3 were by an innings.
Many of England's top runs scorers have enjoyed their own personal records against India or Pakistan but most of those weren't, as one might think, set in the Indian subcontinent. In fact, the roads at the The Oval and Lord's feature rather a lot. Individual top scores against any Test opposition:
Graham Gooch v India (333) at Lord's Harry Brook v Pakistan (317) at Multan Dennis Compton v Pakistan (278) at Nottingham Zak Crawley v Pakistan (267) at Southampton Alastair Cook v Pakistan (263) at Abu Dhabi Joe Root v Pakistan (262) at Multan Ian Bell v India (235) at The Oval Wally Hammond v India (217) at The Oval David Lloyd v India (214*) at The Oval Ian Botham v India (208) at The Oval Mike Gatting v India (207) at Chennai Michael Vaughan v India (197) at Nottingham Alec Stewart v Pakistan (190) at Birmingham Dennis Amiss v India (188) at Lord's Paul Collingwood v Pakistan (187) at Lord's Jonathan Trott v Pakistan (184) at Lord's Colin Cowdrey v Pakistan (182) at The Oval
Pakistan to be docked Test Championship points for producing a pitch offering too much help to the bowlers
Bizarrely, this has, whether it is a combination of the cracks in the wicket or inept batting, become a proper "Test" match with a result on the fifth day in all probability.
Leach showing why he is still England's number one spinner. Good take from Smith too.
Good for Leech after his injury forced him to miss matches but if Jack had taken the wicket with his 1st ball and not his 2nd ball that would've been a hat trick of 1st ball wickets after Wokes and Carse.
With the next Test starting on Tuesday, Stone leaving the party, there will be at least a couple of bodies and minds in the bowling department that won't be 100% come next Tuesday. Much will depend on whether Stokes can return and bowl too because, if he can't, then we either have to drop a batsman or go in with just four bowlers (meaning dropping a spinner because I can't see us playing just two quicks on that track). For those reasons, I don't see how Stokes goes back into the side if he isn't fit enough to turn his arm over in a meaningful way?
Pakistan's 2nd innings collapse was predicted by a lot of pundits even before their battering by the Yorkshire Tykes .. all sorts of records set by England, there should be a 'handicap' method of measuring records according to the pitch, opposition etc .. all in all I am enjoying this test, but hope that Pakistan can make a better fist of things during the rest of the series
What is the highest first innings score, to go on and then lose by an innings ?
No team has scored over 500 in their 1st innings and then gone on to lose by an innings.
Also the previous total (as shown in an earlier post) of 492 was by Ireland. So a recent Test playing nation & not a longstanding one like Pakistan.
Anyway, I now expect Pakistan to get a (small) lead & make us bat again. But would love to win by an innings & own a record that probably wont ever be beaten.
Given how desperate the people of Pakistan were to have a return to hosting Home Tests, the record of the players has been abysmal - since 2022 and after this game it will be: Played 11, Won 0, Drawn 4, Lost 7. Away from home it hasn't been anywhere near as bad: Played 7, Won 3, Drawn 0, Lost 4.

Should all be over in 4 day's.
Oh for a good batting wicket.
That was only last year in April 2023.
1531 runs over 4 days on a minefield of a pitch 🤥

Leach strikes to break a very good partnership
