Hopefully a contract extension isn't too far away.

Though at the same time, it would be nice for him to be rested and fresh for Saturday!

At least Ireland's games were Thursday and Sunday, so he can return to us earlier than the players who play their final game on Tuesday

Surprised by this, he ranks fairly highly for progressive passes per 90 and not too bad for security too (less surprising)

It's almost like received wisdom takes over from the evidence of one's eyes

Could be. Could also be that everyone else is a bit crap at it too or that the Championship is moving to a more direct and dribbling-based tactical trend. Probably somewhere between three

Probably the definition of progressive pass that helps him here. Coventry makes a lot of passes out to full backs or wide players that are risk free but technically progressive if they go forwards. Here’s his Watford pass map, plenty are technically forward/progressive passes but they are still mostly sideways in nature

If you had a stat for line breaking passes then that’s where he’d probably struggle and what we really lack as a team at the moment. Coventry isn’t the problem though, he’s good at what he does, but just needs someone next to him that is good at what he isn’t

He is the 7th best midfielder in the division for line breaking passes per 90 and 20th for players of all positions

Fair enough I’ll hold my hands up there. Wouldn’t have expected him to be that high up on that

His passing has definitely improved this season. But him and Skipp together are just a genuinely miserable partnership.

Players like Skipp and Doherty make him look worse.  I’m not a huge fan but he was better when Chalobah was playing

Can you filter this for just our players?

Having had a look I also think this definition of line breaking passes is probably not what I mean. It says Coventry plays one every 6 passes which is definitely not the case, would imagine it’s actually just meaning progressive passes. So my original point still stands

Last graph I promise but this one also reflects well on CC. Skipp makes more defensive contributions but Coventry's passing is more positive. I suppose the caveat is that he was playing at the beginning of the season when form was better and Chalobah was next to him

Chalobah would also make Skipp and Docherty look better.
That's the problem because without Chalobah you can perm any 2 from 3 with Coventry,  Skipp or Docherty and it doesn't work.

The skipp stats back up what we can all see - skipp is a defensive midfielder without much else in his locker - he has more licence in our team to get forward and / or involved in forward play than Coventry but is a country mile behind him on the stats. I think Cov is a better player, full stop and Skipp has killed our team unfortunately. Everybody has gone backwards since he came into the side. There's no quick solution to it but we can't all be wrong in seeing this. (although i accept there are still a few bedazzled by his ex spurs / prem pedigree)

Such a flawed stat because a line breaking pass can be classified as dropping deep receiving the ball and passing the ball beyond an opposition front 3 to a midfielder on the edge of the centre circle in your own half.

I understand it’s not his game but 7th best for line breaking passes but bottom 13% of mids for chances created per 90, bottom 27% for expected assists and bottom half for pass accuracy.

I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
but wanted to check with Leuth if I’m still a “fucking idiot” for saying Coventry only looked good because he was paired with Chalobah?

I don't particularly rate him in this division he just passes sideways and doesn't protect the defence as much as you expect he should

Last 2 games he’s been well off it. Would go with Skipp and Costello (Chalobah if he’s fit) next week
