Don't care what the stats say. I can see with my own eyes that he is absolutely gash at this level

That's the last thing he does. And he did several forward passes today. He had a rotten five minutes yes, but saying he hides? Fucking ridiculous

No he doesn't hide, but instead of hiding what he does is back off the player too much, or get pulled out wide but not commit to a challenge, so all they have to do it pass it past him into a gaping hole in the midfield, it happened about 4 or 5 times today and as he was the only defensive midfielder the gap left behind was even bigger than normal. At least when Dobson used to get pulled out of position he'd put in a blood and thunder challenge and win the ball 70% of the time, CC just stands there awkwardly staring at the opposition

So so bad and not a Championship level footballer.

The real problem is that we have him and JRS starting today when CM was our biggest problem last season.

We definitely didn't have JRS starting today, unfortunately.

The only reason he played was because we had JRC in and he is 30% faster than Skipp.

If Skipp had the same pace as Coventry he would have played because he is a better footballer. Plain and simple.

Thats not saying much - and is more an indication of how fucked we are in that position.

The only thing that's ridiculous is the way you continue to defend him no matter how badly he plays.
Last week at Watford plus yesterday against Norwich were probably two of his worst ever games in a Charlton shirt.
You just choose to see what you want to see.

Awful yesterday, fell to the floor for the first Watford goal, didn’t close down Brunn Larsen when he cut in for the first goal at Burnley, penalty conceded at Bristol City and was crap at Cardiff.

Dropped 5 horror performances in a row
  • The same happened last season. Looked decent until coming back from International duty, then his levels dropped significantly!

Probably just knackered. 3 game week next week, he can’t start all 3 surely?

I am still sticking to my guns and saying Skipp and Mwamba is what I want to see. Best of a bunch of average (at best) options.

He cant cope at this level, doesn't have the speed of thought or the anticipation or the vision, can only haul down or trip a player to try to prevent them from getting away, slow moving the ball on so we've lost any space we had, which then means he invariably has to pass backwards or sideways.

Conor Coventry plays as a smart, defensive midfielder for Charlton Athletic who focuses on reading the play rather than using physical strength. Out of every 100 midfielders in the league, his ability to cut out passes is better than 97 of them, making him elite at stopping attacks before they start. However, when he is forced into direct, one-on-one physical battles on the ground, he struggles significantly. His success rate in these floor challenges is only better than 23 out of 100 midfielders, meaning he loses most of his physical shoulder-to-shoulder contests. Because he is easily overpowered in these physical battles, he often resorts to giving away tactical fouls to stop the opposition from breaking away. In fact, the number of fouls he commits is higher than 93 out of 100 players in the league. When the ball is in the air, his aerial skills are perfectly average, ranking better than 43 out of 100 players.

When it comes to using the ball, Coventry acts as a reliable passing engine who prefers to keep things safe and simple. Out of 100 midfielders, the total volume of passes he attempts is higher than 81 of them, and his successful completion rate is better than 62 of his peers. While he is very good at keeping possession, he rarely takes risks to drive the team forward; his ability to spot and play creative, key passes is only better than 25 out of 100 midfielders, and his dribbling volume is near the very bottom, beating just 12 out of 100 players.
In the attacking third of the pitch, his goal threat is virtually non-existent, as shown by his total of zero goals and zero assists this season. He almost never gets into positions to score or create, with his expected goals rating beating just 22 out of 100 players, and his expected assists beating 38 out of 100. Furthermore, he rarely shoots, with his total shots taken ranking better than only 19 out of 100 midfielders. Ultimately, Coventry protects his team's defence by being clever and intercepting the ball early, recycling possession safely rather than using muscle to win physical fights or pushing forward to create goals

Interesting. First paragraph pretty much bang on how I see it. Makes interceptions more than any player I can remember. But needs a more physical player alongside him for some of the more nasty side. 2nd and 3rd para I feel are more down to his role in the side and the way we play/instructions he is given. I think he is capable of more progressive passing but he is instructed to play it safe and we dont have the players making the runs anyway. He's never gonna score lots but should get a few more assists and play some more progresive passes in a better side.

That summary pretty much... sums it up. His best assets are his positional sense and defensive decision-making. Recently, they've been missing and he's been costing us goals, which is why he looks truly awful, because there is not much else to his game.

I appreciate what he's done for us, and he is capable of putting in a stormer every now and again, but I have never really warmed to him. As a footballer I find him pretty uninspiring.

    Strengths
    interceptions
    Short passes

    weaknesses
    duels
    fouls
    dribbling
    key passes
    shooting
    G/A

Within the details there’s 8 metrics they look at and Coventry only excels in 2. (9 if you include aerial battles where he’s just below average).

Doesn’t make for a great read

Basically if he doesn't intercept the pass he's fucked. As I mentioned in the post match thread, several times he was pulled out wide by their play and just kind of stood there, clearly waiting for a forward pass to cut out. All they did was pass it around him and as he was the only defensive midfielder, it left a gaping hole in the middle of the park every time it happened. He then doesn't have the pace or physicality to get back and challenge properly.

He looks good with a second defensive player alongside him who's able to mop up when this happens, but playing with a double pivot and 5 at the back means we are relying on just 3 players for all attacking impetus
