Good chance he’d have been in there scrapping for the second ball that they scored from.Weegie Addick said:
I wonder if he’d have organised us better from the final restart last night if he’d been on the pitch by then? Though I’m not sure who he’d have come on for.shirty5 said:Our Club Captain on the substitutes bench for the 6th successive league game in a rowHis last start was away at Stoke City at the end of November.1 -
Docherty has been absolutely atrocious recently. He doesn't do 'the simple things', he's basically not been able to do much of anything. The game passes him byRock Spectacle said:Whole midfield is a mess at the moment, Carey has dropped off alarmingly since West Brom, Coventry seems to be playing as a 4th centre half, Anderson isn't quite sure where he is playing, Doc seems to do the simple things and is vocal. And we've got a lot more points with him than without. Who knows

I'd disagree. He is never going to be the goal scoring or crunch tackling midfielder. But he will get back and fight for the ball, help defend and push on the attack. A traditional CM who helps with the flow of the game from the middle of the pitch and gets around it. So many times I've also seen him have more heart for the badge than most defenders and at least try and make sure we fight to not to concede and be the only or last man in defence where the rest have gone missing. The Doc hate is honestly one of the maddest things going and I believe most is from everyone jumping on the bandwagon and making him this seasons Charlton scapegoat that we always seem to have.Leuth said:

Nothing against his effort, but he's been unable to lay a glove on the opposition recently5

I criticised him a lot last season as well, so I don't think there's any scapegoating going on. Our midfield struggled to dominate other L1 midfields and we can't be starting most of those same players in this league and have any hope for success.cafc-4-life said:

Yeah a classic case of top bloke, great attitude but just not good enough now imo.Leuth said:Nothing against his effort, but he's been unable to lay a glove on the opposition recently4 -
Coventry is the type of game Docherty is most useful in. His best games this season have been against the big teams that have a lot of the ball. He’s positionally disciplined which is what is most important against this kind of team, they try and pull you apart so you need to be tough to break down. Doubt Costello can do back to back starts so I’d bring Docherty in tomorrow2

We've dropped him and our form hasn't got any better, in fact we've got even worse. Maybe time to start him again and see if our fortunes change0

Others may be better on the ball. But I think we miss his captaincy skills and leadership in midfield.1

The last few games he’s been involved in, I’ve noticed more how he just aimlessly boots the ball away/forward, I’m assuming that’s a confidence thing but he definitely isn’t putting his foot on the ball and picking passes, and then just seems to be a step behind the game, like the 1st few games of the season, he then upped his game for a bit, but has now regressed again.0

Great captain, great character to have around the club but he’s not a championship midfielder5

He is 29 and has plenty of Champ experience. Just think his confidence has been knocked for whatever reason and he has been rested as a result. Albeit one game but JRC was head and shoulders above vs Pompey and with a point to prove expect him to keep Doc out for a while yet.0

I still think it’s true what some of us said in the summer that we should look to upgrade in his position.
Anderson will likely need regular game time if he’s going to get there, and we aren’t in the position to give him that.
JRC has the chance to make that spot his own, but it’s possible we make a signing there - I think wing back (both sides) and up front will be the priority (Fofana nearly signing shows NJ wanted to strengthen up front in the summer) before CM, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t sign one this window.
Docherty can play a part as he showed in his good run at the start of the season, but he’s best suited to playing a more defensive role than the box to box all rounder we probably need in general.
Longer term no he’s not the answer, but we’ve got to stay up first and that’s also true for other players, it’s not something to single Docherty out for.2 -
Maybe Doc is not necessarily first choice, but I would still play him infront of Charlie Methven.Scoham said:I still think it’s true what some of us said in the summer that we should look to upgrade in his position.
