Olympics 2024

Due to start Friday 26th July - 11th August in Paris.

Any events you’re looking forward, seems to send up a new load of people I’d never heard of before, that become absolute household names.

Lived watching it since I was a kid, can’t remember what channels are showing it?

Any apps people use to track competitions?

  • Men's 100m breaststroke: unmissable.
  • I’m looking forward to watching the gymnastics - hoping Max Whitlock can win his 4th gold medal before he retires at the end of the competition.
  • I can’t think of an Olympics like this in my lifetime where I know barely anyone taking part .
Boxing is probably my favourite sport followed by the athletics then the track Cycling .
  • I think I'm right, The Discovery+  channel is the one to watch, I believe they have the main rights nowadays. I do like the BBC coverage especially for the athletics.
I intend to watch as much as I can particularly the boxing, cycling, gymnastics, athletics, horse dancing, swimming, diving, hockey, football, archery, weightlifting, surfing, sailing, rowing, skate boarding and climbing.
  • There is street dance for the first time - Breaking - which should be good.

Men’s synchronised swimming makes debut as well.

Yeah discovery own the rights, mainly shown here via Eurosport

BBC will also have live coverage due to the Crown Jewels rule, but like the  Japan Olympics it is restricted on what they can show as they are not the main rights holder
  • Re athletics, Eurosport show competitors from all countries where as the BBC focus on British athletes and the fill it in with lots of waffle from a variety of ex athletes on the gravy train.
  • Absolutely love the Olympics, am barely going to be able to watch any of it this year and gutted about it

    Love it as well.

Looking forward to the three weeks every four years where everyone at work is an expert on the different intricacies of the kneeling, standing and prone components of the rifle shooting, and the likely wind changes in the offshore sailing

  • Sign up to discovery for a month. It costs £6.99 then cancel. You can watch any sport live or on delay. I would highly recommend doing this.
  • The Discovery + App is free for anyone already signing up for TNT (formerly BT Sport).
  • Track cycling. Don’t have a clue about those involved but awesome to watch. Would love to see it live.
I went to watch a session of the Birmingham Commonwealth games cycling, as it was held in the London Olympic velodrome. An excellent watch, other than hearing the Aussie national anthem too much!

    That’s £30+ for a month though

What a way to celebrate my 70th:(

I was mentioning it more for those who already have BT Sport/TNT, and didn't perhaps realise that this also includes Discovery.
  • It’s only on for just over two weeks? I always thought it was a lot longer than that.
  • Looking forward to it. I'm going to the weightlifting and wrestling finals.
  • I love how invested I get in sports and British competitors whom I had never heard of a moment before they perform, and, even if they win gold, I will likely have forgotten a week later.
But in that moment they make the whole Nation smile.

Velodrome at Stratford. Great place to watch it. Few years since I did but well worth it.
  • looking forward to it and with it being in Paris will be on at watchable hours. Athletics the highlight for me.

If you fancy it, this is always good https://www.london3day.com/
  • and if you really fancy it, you can do a taster day on the track there https://www.better.org.uk/leisure-centre/lee-valley/velopark/taster
  • Athletics is always my no. 1, lots of Brits that I'm looking forward to seeing; Keely Hodgkinson, Laura Muir, Eilish McColgan, Molly & Holly in the pole vault, Charlie Purdue KJT, Max Burgin, Josh Kerr, Matt Hudson-Smith, Zharnel Hughes and Mahamed Mahamed  (who is coached by a friend of mine). probably missing a few from that list. And really looking forward to Sydney McLaughlin vs Femke Bol

Also love the hockey and triathlon but will watch basically anything else except the swimming which bores me to tears
  • So much good stuff.
Doping for advantage aside I like the purity of some individual sports.
The high jump for example, you either get over or don't. Weightlifting, you either lift the bastard high, or fail. I don't really get the boxing scoring system, but either you win or the other person does.
There is loads more, but my point is I love the fact that it is rare to fiddle the system (doping aside).
The funny thing about the high jump and weightlifting is I always want the people to succeed whoever they are.

    Really?
Swimming sort of dominates the 1st week then Athletics the 2nd week.

and that's a history of the main stadium being out of use for the Opening Ceremony which isn't happening this time, as the Rugby 7s will be played at the Stade de France before the opening ceremony
