RIP Graham Thorpe

  • Taken far too early. He stood out and stood up at a time in the 90s when very few England players didn't. He rarely gave his wicket away cheaply and a great fielder too.Its a shame that he had to make way for KP as I think he had more to give.

    RIP Thorpey

    THIS

I have always felt his omission from 2005 Ashes was incorrect - he should have been in the team - obviously history ‘tells us’ they called it right - personally I don’t agree - he was dropped too early - still had plenty in the fuel tank to give England

But as Lennie said ‘never look back wishing’

He was either born too late or too early - either side, he would have been in superb England teams, and been a star - sadly he was a bright star, amongst largely sub average team mates on the international stage

Loved watching him bat - he simply gave me hope, in largely fallow times

Surrey member from early 90's so witnessed him behind the crease many times, a very sad loss.

    Taken away too young.
  • RIP - no age whatsoever.
  • Sad news,  RIP Graham 🙏

Although obviously we won, Ian Bell averaged 17, so you could argue that history suggests that they could have picked Thorpe and Pietersen.

But I guess that was never the consideration at the time.
  • In reality it was Bell he was dropped for, as KP was always going straight into the side.

He retired completely later that summer due to his back problems. I read somewhere that he has been planning to quit after the Ashes.
  • Committed suicide - how very sad. Hope he has finally found peace.
  • Tragic

    RIP

  • Very sad. There had been rumours about what happened 2 years ago, and sadly they were true.
  • This breaks my heart.
  • Talk to people.

    If it helps, start here
  • That is so hard to read his daughters words
  • Yeah very moving and shows that suicide isn’t the ‘selfish’ act some people believe it to be. People honestly believe they are doing the right thing for their family by taking their own life. Depression is an awful disease.
  • So moved by his and their story. Horrible.
  • Terrible. I heard what happened a couple of weeks ago, but won't put it on here as it still hasn't come out in the public domain.
  • I'd heard the rumour that it was the reason he was ill back in 2022, but hoped it hadn't been true.

Really sad, very brave of his family to release that statement, and goes to show how mental illness can affect the seemingly strongest.

    RIP Graham.

Not nice at all, and contrary to what some people believe to be the cowards way out, it really isn't. We don't have the right to say what other people should, or shouldn't do with their own lives.

Here we have a successful man, who lived a life many could only dream of, and yet it still wasn't enough. I feel sorry for his family, and of course hope they, and Graham all find peace.

  • Committed suicide.

Stepped in front of a train.

I feel for the train driver.
Yes that is what I was told but thought I shouldn't post.

It was on the lunchtime news. From the coroners inquest I think.

I heard he had taken his own life, which is very sad,...not about the means, unsure about that, don't feel that they would put that information out...

As do I, my eldest is a train driver. I believe some have never driven a train again after such an horrific incident.
