I actually kind of agree with you @NabySarr but can you imagine the meltdown on here if TC starts as a wingback on Saturday.
Tbf against Birmingham maybe not the game for it! But we need more threat from out wide and we’ve built for 3-5-2 so I think it makes sense
I agree, it actually wouldn't quite work as 352 anyway in reality it would just read that way on paper. Ramsay tucks in and the defenders create a back 4 (I would play Edwards not Potts) and Miles plays in that half space on the right
Godden here basically confirms the game plan is be horrible play against and then you create time to play with the ball. Feels like you need more than that in L1

This just sounds like going away from home to a prem side in the FA Cup type tactics as opposed to going away to Bristol Rovers in bad form.
Birmingham will want to play out at all costs so I'd love to see us just set up to attack. Get an early goal and see what they're really like.
Birmingham have conceded a few early goals this season. Then they've tended to steamroller whoever did that to them
I think it's just those comments from Beilik rubbed me the wrong way. Done the team talk for the rest of the league going and saying their entire squad doesn't belong in this league.
I'm not convinced we've got players capable of pressing effectively in our squad. The last time I saw us really try to pressure the opposition backline was against Reading and they schooled us by playing through our lines with ease. To be brutally honest it's not tactics or formations that are our main problem but personnel and that's not something that can be fixed at this point.

In that case make it a diamond with TC at the tip and give him the freedom to drift onto either wing.
Not sure why Jones has a preference for 3-5-2 when he’s used a diamond in the past. It would help us play better football, but I suppose that’s not what Jones wants.
I think he used it in a home game last season but it didn’t last long before he switched back to 3-5-2?
I was thinking of bumping this. I think that is the plan - get it up to the target man to win headers and hold it up or send the ball into the channels for TC to chase and run at the opposition.
TC adds pace and that ups the tempo, but we’ve still not seen much end product.
Our wing backs aren’t offering the quality we need in attack. Small takes players on and gets crosses in but the quality is poor. Ramsay has a frustrating habit of cutting in and keeping possession when it times he needs to attempt what Small does - but perhaps he doesn’t as he knows he’s not a great crosser? When driving out from defence he shows he has the ability to carry the ball, but he rarely uses it in attack.
Our midfield are bypassed by the direct play. We know Coventry is comfortable getting the ball off the defence and using it well, though I’d like to see him be more ambitious with his passing as I think he’s got the ability.
Allan Campebll, Docherty, Anderson and Berry haven’t shown enough but if we played more short passes they’d get more touches and get involved in the game more. Currently their main job is to fight for second balls and get in the box when we create a chance - which isn’t anywhere near often enough.
Up front Jones wants a target man. Until Leaburn is fit Ahadme has no genuine competition. We needed him to come in and be a key player, he’s played like a young player learning the role.
We’ve moved away from the possession based football we saw under Garner and to an extent under Appleton. For me we’ve gone too far the other way and need to find the right balance. Jones probably feels that way given he dropped Mitchell for REG and it was purely tactical.
I don’t see 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 working for us as TC is our only winger.
I’d like to see a 4-4-2 diamond. I wouldn’t be against Zach Mitchell getting a chance though would ideally like to see his contract extended first.
We used a diamond under Bowyer, our best team on paper included Bielik as the holding player, and he could easily move to CB allowing us to change to 3-5-2 mid game. Mitchell has played both roles and has some similar strengths.
Cullen was the deeper of the two CMs, Coventry could potentially play that role, again he has some similar qualities.
TC might be our best option at the tip with plenty of freedom to drift wide - not ideal but playing Coventry, A Campbell, Docherty and Berry/Anderson gives us four players who are too similar.
A box midfield is another option and would have the same goal as a diamond would - put more focus on possession and attacking play without completely changing the system and use a formation that suits our squad.
Like I said Jones made a switch yesterday that was related to possession which shows he’s aware. He might need to go that step further and change the formation with a bold choice or two in team selection.
He also needs to put some attention on the wing backs to get them into positions to put in crosses and cut backs. In Ramsay and Edwards I think they’re capable, but we need more possession and they need to make the right runs and decisions in attack to make it work.
It’s been a few weeks but thanks for listening NJ 🙂
Much more football today too which was desperately needed after that horrible night on Tuesday.
The box definitely worked. We weren’t mega creative but with that system against other teams I think we will be. The fact they changed shape at half time (and maybe in the last 10 mins too? I was having too much fun to notice) is a real credit to NJ and his tactics
Will be interesting to see if that was a plan specifically for Birmingham, or if we will adopt that from now on. With tough games coming up I think we will keep that 4-2-2-2 shape
Think against weaker opponents we could use Tyreece Campbell as one of the attacking 2 midfielders

My belief is that it was a plan specifically concocted for today to nullify their deep ball players.
Given how successful it turned out to be, I think we might be using it more than Jones had planned to originally.
I hope we keep that shape and don't change anything for Stockport. Unless Anderson gets a knock or something on international duty then I'd start Berry.

Yeah I think that’s how I see it, was a Birmingham plan that will now probably become our plan A because it worked so well
Think that box midfield could be the winning formula for us. Docherty and Coventry as the deep 2, and then we can use A. Campbell and Anderson for when we need energy and to scrap and press. But then we can swap them for Berry and/or Tyreece Campbell if we want a bit more quality maybe against weaker opposition
Said it over on the post match thread but it was noticeable how much time the CB's took to pick the right pass. There were times where you could see them getting ready to ping a long ball but decided against it. Having 4 CM's that will run and run creates a lot of danger and those defence splitting passes are slightly less important if you have someone floating between the lines to create a bit of chaos.
If NJ doesn't want the wingbacks getting to the byline, the diamond/box seems a better bet because the extra man in midfield at least creates some more attacking possibilities through the centre.
Interesting that playing with fullbacks instead of wingbacks yesterday didn't make any real difference to how high/deep they were sitting.
From what I saw on Saturday ball distribution is down to the central defenders who smack it up the wing hoping for one of the wing back to collect. Problem is are the wingbacks good enough to deliver/ create the chances for the frontmen as we dont have much creativity in midfield.
Time will tell but I'm fearing we just dont have enough to win enough games.
Nothing I've seen has changed my view from the 1st week of the season. Yes we might have change to a flat back 4 but still no creativity, the crossing is more than dire & the strikers are either unfit, inexperienced or playing out of position.
Seems like the positives of the tactical tweak to a 4box2 are being undermined by the technical/decision making abilities of the two 10's.
Jones likes Anderson so I think it either of the two are to drop out it's likely to be A Campbell. You then have 3 options for the second slot in my opinion, all of which bring different things.
1) Docherty - underwhelming so far but has the energy to make it work and is good at playing simple passes, confident he would have slipped in one of the front 2 when Anderson managed to find their CB yesterday
2) Berry - Creatively offers more than most but doesn't have the energy to press in quite the same way. Can that be nullified with a more efficient presser up front than Godden?
3) T Campbell - Would run and press into the ground and has the ability to just run at defenders. Passing isn't always the best. Has the benefit of a good relationship with Anderson, Leaburn & Kanu which could unlock something.
Personally I think options 1 & 3 the best but don't think any of them are perfect solutions by any stretch.

Docherty has been mostly poor when playing further forward, so got to be 2 or 3 for me.
Berry deserves to start after the impact he had on Saturday and last night

Don't think you can compare him playing the 8 in the 352 to playing as a 10 in the 4box2. He'd be another 10/15 yards up the pitch which makes a big difference

Does Berry have the pressing though? Or are you banking on Anderson doing it for both?
T Campbell playing there behind 2 strikers would be interesting. However would need working on (don't think he has filled that role) and with our string of striker injuries would leave us short of striker changes in 2nd half. Particularly as Leaburn unlikely to play more than 60 again Saturday. Would certainly like to see it given a go longer term though, with Berry always available as an impact sub. However this week would go for Berry.

There wasn't a 10 in that system, there was one more advanced midfielder, but his job typically was to try and link up with the right back deeper and try and push him up the field. After that he was supposed to push on past the strikers as they received the ball. He only really started high up the pitch out of possession as part of the press. In the box formation he would be spending a lot more time higher up and that's mostly about pressing and moving the ball on at turnovers, which yes, he's not been much good at either, but I think he'd still be a candidate there in place of Anderson if he can show the same sort of energy in his pressing. I'd like to see him alongside Berry or TC there.
I think it’s pretty likely we return to 3 at the back on Saturday anyway, to match Wrexham like we did Barnsley in the second half. With our defensive options at the moment we might need the security of an extra defender
I think we’ll be very physical and combative. Not free scoring. Difficult to beat bit don’t win enough. Still don’t see enough goals for top two and 60/40 for top six.
If only we had a striker who works hard, doesn't stop running & virtually guarantees you 20+ goals
Is it better to have one player that scored 25 in a season, whilst 6 others score 20 between them - not sure how many were league vs other comps
Or a more even spread between our 5 strikers of 50+ total? I think Ahadme could get 15 Godden could get 10 Kanu could get 10 Aneke could get 8 (If he stays fit) Leaburn could get another 8 (If he stays fit)
I would obviously prefer one gets 20+ and the rest still chip in with their numbers above, but that's not realistic for us as May had to leave due to circumstances.

You fucking donut.
The theory here is still right we just don’t create enough chances. Bar last night I don’t think May would have had much to feed off this season. I think he’d be on a similar amount of goals to Godden (who is on track to get more than 10 which is something)
wrexham clearly hadn’t done much homework on us if Parky made a thing about restricting us to long cross field balls. Thats our game Parky!
I know we say it every week but I have never known us to have a squad with such little creativity. We literally have T Campbell, and they do far had delivered no positive outcome,
I think I’d happily give up food for a week if it meant a return of someone like Rak Sakyi.
Even in the shite last 8 years we’ve always had a Rak-Sakyi, CBT, Lee, Leko, Millar, Doughty, Gallagher, Green, Williams, Fosu, Aribo, Jackson, Holmes, Dasilva, Malvididi, Lookman, Botaka. Someone with either pace, trickery or could find a through ball.
