Watching that game today I thought we had a dose of ‘Liverpool syndrom’.
Squad believed we were so good and Reading would be easy.
No one applied themselves as in the previous 3 matches and we paid the price.
After half time and presumably a good boxxxxxxcg they came out and played some football but left open some gaps and Reading capitalised.
They have to learn that if they don’t all become Duracell Bunnies they will lose!3 -
I don't think it was as bad as some (or even Jones) are making out. First half, yeah they had more of the ball but did nothing with it and we had the best chance. Second half we started brightly, they scored a decent goal and unfortunately we made a cock up for the second. One of those days but nothing to panic over.5

Especially when you look at the performances and goal “threat” in the 4 games thus far from our current front 2…
I don’t disagree with the sentiment of your original post other than the point about May - let’s get this very straight, May was and is a superb striker on pretty much all counts at this level and our side would be much, much better with him in it. I like Jones no messing management approach, but I think his management of May last season was appalling. If I had been running my socks off and carrying an entire team on my shoulders last year like he was, I would be effed off if somebody came in and started giving me stick and calling me out and hauling me off at the first opportunity every game.17 -

We have scored 4 goals in 4 games. Even if we are tight defensively all season we still need to score 75 to 80 goals. This strike force would take 2 seasons to do that if theyre lucky. Until the goals start coming the decision to sell May looks disastrous.5

I sat just behind goal and heard L Jones shout "f***** pinning him down" to one of our players while defending a corner. He is "well 'ard", good CB, I like him.
Not impressive from Charlton overall though, riddled with bad passing.
Not enough play to feet also: long balls not finding the target, or if they did, it was miscontrolled.
Mistimed tackles too frequent. And strikers not in position for winger crosses.
On the positives, good pressing and fitness, no injuries, and they gave their all.
Annoyingly, too many silly fans in the upper and lower seating in the south stands, both Reading and Charlton, almost breaching the barrier to fight each other. I really feel for the stewards and the security people.0 -
I have to tell you that you’ve inferred all of that. I wasn’t claiming any of that about May. The key part of what I said was ‘and work harder after a bollocking’. Jones has specifically brought in people who he knows or thinks will react well to this style of management. May didn’t. You’ve said it yourself there, he didn’t like getting called out and subbed so they didn’t work well together. I also think Hector is the kind to care when he loses, but he’s a very strong-minded player who was afraid to let it be known when he wasn’t happy with management decisions and similarly would have got tired of Jones I reckon. I think the overall thing here is that you’re very upset with the sale of Alfie May, which is fine, I also think it’s a shame that Jones couldn’t work with him but he’s gone and inferring some extensive offence whenever people mention him in passing isn’t going to change anything.paulsturgess said:

Been pretty pissed off after that, travelling up for that rubbish. But as soon as I saw NJ seething in his interview my mood has completely changed. He’s not another Appleton who will let standards fall, he will get right in to the players this week to get us going again against the Millers. UTA!7

Basically the same thing though. Jones is going to be incredibly marmite, some players are going to respond well to his style and some won't. He's not going to change the way he does it and he won't make exceptions so players who don't like it, get shifted on.paulsturgess said:

No doubt our attacking play and goalscoring need to improve, but being strong defensively is also very important.

Yes, you also need to score goals as well.
The problem with your theory is that teams will not and do not score 4 goals every game.
The top teams score probably no more than 2 per game on average.
But if they have a leaky defence and concede 2 every game they will start to lose a lot of games.
I don't recall Portsmouth, Derby or Oxford scoring 4 or more much last season.
But I do remember Pompey & Derby conceding 1 or less many games.
You seem to be about the only poster who cannot comprehend this.12 -
What is odd about the May argument is the idea he couldn’t play for Jones because he runs around too much and isn’t disciplined enough while people are also defending Ahadme’s apparent lack of any discernible skill set because he runs around a lot. I know they are different players but I just don’t buy that Alfie couldn’t have done just as much closing down as TC and Ahadme do whilst also offering a goal scorer’s instinct.paulsturgess said:

What’s done is done with May though. Whether it be TC or Ahadme or both that that come out next week (or the week after) we need to try something different up front.We do have options and the potential ace up our sleeve is Leaburn coming back so no need to declare all hope is lost yet.3 -

Slowly scrolling through the BBC’s league 1 results and I saw that Orient had been beaten by three goals and then saw Bolton had also been beaten by two goals and I thought oh dear our wins against those teams was perhaps nothing to get too excited about and then with a sense of foreboding I scrolled further and saw our result.Not panicking yet, but …1

Looking forward to this all week, but felt disappointed generally leaving the ground.
There is one mitigating factor.
In terms of winning every home game and drawing every away game, the win at Wigan still leave us one point ahead of that target.
Puts pressure on the Rotherham game though.1 -
Typical, my whole family agrees to go and most of the team fail to turn up. That pressing game that has served us so well this season was absent, we allowed them time and space, consequently for much of the game all the play was theirs. I really hope that the lack of energy was a blip and not a sign of fatigue. To their credit our defence did hold solid for quite a while. There was very little threat from us though, partly because we had very little of the ball, partly because the passing was so awful we just couldn't hold onto it when we did get it. We did get into the game eventually, but never looked liked scoring, we're just not creative enough. That said, I did feel sorry for Campbell when he was pulled off, he was the only one who looked threatening. The subs were disappointing: Chuks got a lot of the ball, but did nothing with it; Kanu looked like he was unsure how to shoot; as for Godden, I'm wracking my brain but I can't remember seeing him on the ball. Boy, do we look like we need a wonder signing sometime in the next hour.0

I still think there are many positives in comparison to this time last season and it’s a work in progress. It’s bad enough losing but reading this thread tonight is almost worse - some posters seem determined to establish how bleak things are when we are in a radically different situation than the last few years.

very surprised Godden did not start especially after the impact he had last week.
the referee was a Total wanker and we should have been awarded a penalty.
the reading first Goal looked spectacular but was truthfully freakish and on 6 other occasions would have not gone in.
I think our superb and honest manager will address todays lack of desire !!2 -

I didn't think we were terrible but we look a bit toothless up top. Ref should have given us a penalty and it is a different game. If we don't concede the first, I don't think we concede the second. Onwards and upwards. Will be better, I suspect, when Leaburn is fit.2
