Alfie May- Progress at Birmingham

Watched parts of the Walsall Birmingham game, which was Stansfield's first game and Alfie had a bit of a stinker. Shot every time he got the ball, rather than get his head up to see players in better positions. Wouldn't be overly surprised to see him dropped as the season goes on. Alfie is a great goalscorer, but Davies likes 4-2-3-1 and makes sense to have Stansfield up top. They will probably be spared by the embarrassment of riches in other positions regardless, but a League One winning team needs a better number 10 than Alfie May, who is way better at scoring goals than setting them up.

Alfie would have gone there expecting to be top dog.

He got the raging hump when he heard we were trying to sign Luke Berry as he saw it as a threat and I dare say it contributed to his departure.

But he told me he had limited time left playing and had to go "where the money is - if it means going to the Emirates I would do it".  He just wants to provide for his family.  So I don't suppose he's over the moon with the embarrassment of riches at Brum but I also think he has the comfort blanket of a nice bumper contract to soften the blow
So he signs for the biggest club in his career at that point, the squad massively underperforms and then he gets the hump when the squad is improved

sounds like he likes being the big fish in a mall pond. I did notice that he didn’t run over to celebrate the equaliser on monday
Something on the Vlog they said a statement was issued that said they loved each other to bits
  • Just occurred to me that JS will be the most likely penalty taker so that will make it extra hard for AM to keep up with him on the GS table.

I have to say none of this fills me with reassurance about NJs big plan. For me the jury is still  out on how we have replaced him. And as for the thing about Berry, when he cocked up from 1 yard, and then tried to look as if he knew all along he was offside, that made me relapse into grieve mode for Alfie all over again.

Well, we’ll learn more in a couple of weeks time. He’s bound to start against us.
Quite simply we haven't. The odd goal dotted around the team won't be enough.
  • I'm sure the £80k a week salary will soften the blow!
Not a chance in hell he’s on those wages . 12K was what was banded around when he signed
Jesus Christ 🤦🏼‍♂️ Does anyone know people like this in real life?

  • Last season after six games we had 7 goals with four of them scored by one bloke. So far this season we have 6 goals across six different players.

It’s really not that big of a difference in total output thus far (7 vs 6) and I feel far more confident that the latter is more sustainable across a 46 game season.

It’s no coincidence that our long run without a win coincided with the period where Alfie May couldn’t buy a goal. If Alfie couldn’t score, we were lost. Spreading goals around will hopefully protect us from similar problems this season.

Would you rather have both Alfie and the rest chipping in? Obviously you would. But if you pushed me to choose one or the other I’d pick the current set up over what we had last season.
Not sure if you were replying to me but I doubt in this team that Alfie would score too many goals because we're creating very little. Yes I would rather a team put together with a guaranteed goal scorer up front in a partnership with another striker & a creative midfield. We haven't got either. What we have got is a strong defence & very little else. Yes TC is a tricky skilful player but can't score or create for others. Gas is a hard working strong player but isn't going to score goals, I'll be very surprised if he gets into double figures (lets face it he won't) Godden ? Not even a starter. Aneke ? can't start. Kanu ? not getting a start. Leaburn ? who knows what player we're going to get after his very serious injury. Some people are pinning their hopes on Dixon creating & scoring, I wouldn't hold your breath.
Midfield is severely lacking in creativity but then we don't need it when we are playing kick & rush.

If this football was served up by Appleton or any of the other no hopers we have had over the years there would be 100s of apoplectic Lifers demanding his sacking. I'm not for one minute suggesting that we sack NJ before anyone gets upset but this isn't good enough. Yes we're 3rd after 6 games, brilliant, we all want to see a successful team/club but with this setup I think it's going to be another wasted season.
Fair point in particular about Appleton, nobody wanted him but he got by on his early results, the trouble was once the results dried up everything started to unravel and any support for him went. Jones, to be fair, is doing the same at present at least producing results but also making us hard to score against. Only time will tell how the season goes but at least we aren't looking like we'll gift our opponents a goal or two every game.
  • Ryan Reynolds is Canadian not American. #Pedantic
    😂
  • I reckon he will get loaned out to someone like Blackpool in Jan - somewhere where he can effect the results of other promotion chasing sides without being in one.

They bought him for the sake of it whilst throwing money around - the goal was stopping Huddersfield getting him IMO.

May is doing well which shouldn't be a surprise. Let's be honest, he was a journeyman lower league player and now he is getting £15.5k a week. We couldn't match that and were never going to be able to keep him given his age unless we wanted a deeply unhappy player on our hands and that can affect morale in the team. Playing for us another year could have taken away this opportunity where you have a League One club willing to pay ridiculous amounts of money. I wish him all the best as long as it isn't at our expense. We are so far doing better without him than we did with him last season although I am not stupid enough not to know he would make us even better. Overall we are better and the money we got for him may have helped that. It is best we look forwards not backwards.

The best copium post so far in this thread haha
  • So what if he’s on 25k a week ,he had to take the money when he’s nearly in his forties .
This season we’re much better off without him , so what last season was our wankiest season in 98 years but if we compare against it everything is great , we’re still 5th 2nd 3rd

Nail on head for me, I am still sticking with my 7th to 12th prediction

Why would he get the hump when we were trying to sign Berry? - Why would a Midfielder be a threat to him?
Think Swisdom means in terms of being the star, Berry coming down from the Premier League could be perceived as being the main man. I'm guessing Berry will be on high wages too
    Both really

He knew Berry was Nathan's "boy" and also felt threatened in the attacking/goalscoring midfielder role.  He was really pissed off by it.  At the time Luke Berry wasn't someone I was aware of otherwise I would have told him to stop worrying about it.  I think it was only a contributing factor as I think Nathan had made it clear what he did, and didn't want
He'll really not have liked Brum spending £20m on a striker then. Alfie does have a tendency to have temper tantrums, I heard some fairly unflattering stuff about him from his time at Cheltenham before he joined as well. I can see why he and Jones didn't get on given that they're both pretty fiery characters
Agree with this, and perhaps the proof of your insights was seen in the substitutions of May in games.

No problem. It wasn’t my joke. I’m not even saying it was a funny one. But it was so clearly not a serious comment.
