Some things take time, Rome wasn't built in a day as they say. The priority right now is staying up, I think if we do that, we'll have a stronger summer than the last one; for one thing we'll be more suitably prepared going into it. The better football will come.11

I’m the one who looks silly? Preston spent more than £2.1m on one player last month as they broke their record transfer. So again you’re stating things as facts that are just not facts. That to me looks quite sillypaulsturgess said:

because people are comparing budgets and we will have spent much more in total this season on transfer fees and wages combined than they have on transfer fees and wages combined.
that is a definitive fact.
I'm not saying that means we should be as good as them but it's dull all the Jones disciples only entertaining narratives that do not in any way challenge him, and bandying around incorrect statements to support this narrative
I haven't Naby... why do you say that? I'm sure if you research it for yourself you can near enough clarify the broad point yourself.
Did I also make up Hull's transfer embargos, Sheffield Wednesday's points deduction, Blackburn's chaotic ownership/management/squad situation?!
I'm merely encouraging people to consider how we're doing with a bit more of an open mind as it seems clear, from your statement alone there, that anything that paints Jones in a less than godlike-light is just dismissed.
We’ve spent around £10m maybe on transfer fees, Preston probably half of that but as everything is undisclosed it’s hard to say for sure. They broke their record transfer fee in January. Again we don’t know the numbers but I would imagine that their wage bill is much higher than ours and would take their total spend above ours even with our transfer expenditure
If we had a higher budget than Preston, then Thierry Small would probably still play for us. Or we wouldn’t have lost out to them in signing Offiah in the summer
https://the72.co.uk/2025/09/05/preston-north-end-transfers-every-deal-done-season/
Preston spent £1.8m. We spent £10m as you say. You can't really be suggesting they spend more than £8m a year more than us on wages??? Lols as the kids say.
(This Small thing is silly. Been round in circles about this. We could have paid Small if we'd wanted from that £10m. Jones didn't want to for his own reasons, fair enough.)
If you said we spent more than Preston did in the summer window, then yes that’s a fact. Over the whole season I don’t think that’s true at all though and we can’t know for sure anyway as no one has the numbers
None of us know the difference between our wage bill and Preston’s. I’d guess it’s at least £5m but considering the number of players they’ve signed for free I’d imagine their wage bill is quite substantial so it’s probably more than that. What we have been told is that we have a bottom 3 budget, that will be based on wages, but even if you add our transfer expenditure I don’t think there’s that many clubs we’d move above. And it’s probably barely any if you do it properly as we’ve probably only paid around £3m of those fees this season1 -
We spent more then Preston in the summer as our starting point is a couple of hundred miles behind them, seriously, not a comparison19
-
We also spent 7 figures last month right...?
Repeat the overarching point sticking to pretty unarguable from either side points:
- Preston very modest/comparable budget
- Hull transfer embargos
- West Brom shifting players to desperately avoid points deduction
- Blackburn disarray empty stadium awful owners also low budget
- Pompey low budget
- Oxford low budget
- Leicester points deduction
- Sheff Wed points deduction
There is a conversation to be had as to our much more stable ownership, finance and structure circumstances following promotion being better or similar to any or all of the above
We are roughly where one could very reasonably "expect" us to be, in my opinion.
And "preston offered higher wages than us" is not a relevant answer to the question "last night, why did we play such awful negative football and couldn't put a pass togehter or get into the opposition's half yesterday against a hapless team."
To keep repeating - don't think he should be sacked, don't think he's done a terrible job this season. Also don't think he's overperformed, do think he / we could have done better.
Let's hope for progress in our structure, style and performances the final months of the season as we need to be much better next year.0 -
But we weren’t all starting from zero. We got up through the playoffs on the back of a good second half of the season. So while £10m may seem like a lot, it doesn’t get us anywhere near the level and especially when (like most teams) you don’t get every signing right.paulsturgess said:We also spent 7 figures last month right...?

Most of those teams have good squads from years of being established in the Championship, and Leicester are still paying some players Premier League wages. So we may have spent more this year but squads don’t reset and start afresh every Summer.

Seeing as most transfers are undisclosed these days... I'd take any confirmed transfer fees that were on undisclosed deals with a large pinch of salt.4

Preston have been in this league since 2015… their revenue in that period has been £15m+ per year.
Meanwhile Charlton have been stuck in League One with revenues of £8-9m per year…Over a decade that’s a £50-60m difference.2 -

In addition to this a player with us as a top earner will be on around 10k a week works out to be £520k a year. I think Small was RUMOURED to be around £15k a week at Preston or £780k a year.Dazzler21 said:Seeing as most transfers are undisclosed these days... Now he's a fringe player... So just imagine what their true first choice players are on.
A quick look at capology suggests their annual salary bill is around £15.3m this season.
Ours is £11.8m.
Portsmouth is around £12.6m
These are estimates overall but use confirmed salaries to give a more accurate picture allegedly. Again pinch of salt, but imagine they're not miles out.1 -
Lovely. So Dazzler has just confirmed that our overall budget for this season is substantially higher than Preston's, the fact I stated earlier NabyDazzler21 said:

, and you have just highlighted that we bought 3 players this season for the same or more than their all time transfer record
All pretty clear that on paper, we should be competing with Preston this season!

On a more serious note. Having a bigger budget for 1 season doesn’t undo being a division below for 5 years where Preston have been able to bring in Championship quality players. They may not have paid fees but fees don’t equal quality, as our recruitment has shown3 -

Are you seriously trying to claim that we have a bigger budget than Preston (who've been in this division for a decade) simply because we had to spend a bit of money in the summer to try and bring our league one squad up to a half decent championship level?paulsturgess said:

The 3 newly promoted PL clubs all spent more on transfers in the summer than Aston Villa. In fact Sunderland spent 120m more than Villa. But they had to spend big in year one to try and stay there. It doesn't mean they have a bigger budget than Villa and should be doing better than them.
For context if we stay up and finish in our current position of 18th, it'll be our highest league finish for 11 years. Preston have finished above 18th in 10 of the last 11 years.13 -

If you use capology as fact then I’m afraid you’re once again looking silly. Think that website had TC on less than minimum wage not too long ago, it’s a load of bollocks. Just look at our players on there and you’ll see it’s complete nonsense and quoting the numbers from there as fact just makes you look sillypaulsturgess said:

It has Lloyd Jones on 7k a week and Gillesphey and Berry on 10k+. If that was true Lloyd Jones would go on strike3 -

Rather than using made up numbers, here are the only available actual numbers that show Preston’s finances. I’d imagine the current season’s are higher too2 -
A 17m loss is pretty crazy, and this is a team that has been basically treading water going nowhere in the championship for the past decade.
Also a 26 million wage bill pretty emphatically puts to bed @paulsturgess argument that we have a bigger budget than them.3 -

I think that figure is players and staff rather than just players, but it still shows what we are up against when many would consider Preston one of the more “sensible” clubs in the leagueChris_from_Sidcup said:A 17m loss is pretty crazy, and this is a team that has been basically treading water going nowhere in the championship for the past decade.
