Nathan Jones on being ‘absolutely abused’ by Charlton Athletic fans

Half decent media training would do him the world of good. And Methven would know people who can give him that. But he's been around and other clubs must have also thought about that. He probably resists the idea. So we can expect plenty more of these volatile interviews.1

I was surprised by Wimbledon fans treatment of Karl Robinson because they used the ’c-word’. That used to be a no go zone but I’ve heard it used more often in recent years.
Consider the following reactions to Jones’s recent complaint:
Shut up Jones, you whiny wally!
Shut up Jones, you whiny w****r!
Shut up Jones, you whiny Welsh w****r!
Shut up Jones, you whiny f*****g w****r!
Which is worse, the extra expletive or the negative (xenophobic?) use of his nationality?
Also, rightly or wrongly, isn’t it different if someone shouts this out in a football stadium or in the street?
Then consider if it’s one person or twenty.
I think if I were in his position in the dug-out and the F block in the Covered End sang (3 or 4 above) then I would not consider it ’abuse’. However, if I were let’s say, in a public place with my children and a group of 20 people shouted or sang this at me, then I would consider that unacceptable, and yes ’abusive.’20 -

That’s football and happens at every club. He knows that, he’s been in the game long enough. Charlton’s fan base is far from being the most toxic so let’s not kick ourselves too much. The fans were singing his name at Stevenage and again before and at the start of the game yesterday. He’s a chippy fella, reckon he must fall out with people all the time. Digging out fans after a spell of the team being universally awful just seemed an unnecessary move to me, but hey ho, that’s his characterThought this comment yesterday was unnecessary, and his whole demeanour in that post match (looking at the floor, biting his nails) was bizarre. He's a proper numpty in my opinion, but we knew that from his old interviews at Southampton and Stoke. I wish him success while he's here as it means success for Charlton, but doesn't mean I have to like the bloke.
And if he's so sure he's right with the teams he's picking, why has he had to make so many personnel and formation changes in the past 4 matches?22 -

Totally new style of play and personnel. He’s picking sides based on what he’s saying at the time during that process. He knows he’s not always going to get it right1 -

Backroom staff - rolls eyes 'Yes boss, i'll just take him away now, let me know if you change your mind'

I think Jones shouldn’t have bothered going after the treatment after the game, but I also do think you have to consider it from his non-traumatised perspective. We’ve seen too much. For the past 17 years we’ve been an absolute basket case and it’s got progressively worse. I think we’ve had 3 good seasons in that time and even then there was weird stuff going on behind the scenes. We’re used to everything being terrible and any good moment suddenly being ripped away and some more humiliating nonsense happening to us. We now expect the absolute worst and we’re on a hair trigger. Losing 3 games in a row and not playing very well so far this season set people to 11 very quickly. If you’re Jones though, you’d be absolutely mystified. Come in to a team that hasn’t won in 12 games and is set for relegation, get results off Bolton and Pompey, finally get a win off Derby and proceed to lose only the first and last games of his season. Bring in a massively different team playing a very specific way over the summer, see the team be a little slow to adapt and have a couple of setbacks but still be very much in the promotion conversation after 10 games and get an absolute mouthful from fans. If you’ve not got nearly two decades of context for that you’d probably feel a bit put out to be fair. As far as he’s concerned we’re screaming at him for putting the heating on because he doesn’t know our entire family was killed by a radiator. He’d still do well to keep it too himself but I bet he’s perplexed. We aren’t well. We need CBT, but not the winger.34

In his words he got abused by the fan base and called it out. Why does he need media training for that?
Are you saying he should keep his mouth shut and just get on with it? Why? Nobody should be personally abused. Especially when they are trying to do a job.
As I said earlier, name me another work place where it's on?
I'm quite astounded by some of the comments on here.9 -

No issues with booing May, he doesn’t play for us anymore - it was all a bit pantomime anyway (and I’m sure he expected it). It was basically only for his first touch anyway. Suspect most of us would happily have a beer and a chat with him in a pub and he’d probably happily oblige3

Nathan can have his moan up but what’s abuse in his world a couple of fans saying you haven’t got a clue , play Ramsay you Cnut , change the formation you Welsh twat
ok he does all that and we improve
it’s not the whole ground singing you’re getting sacked in the morning .
touchy fruit bat
as the great cardigan above says ‘just win games ‘9 -

Very volatile man, can see why we've got the Luton crowd in because they appear to be a comfort zone for him. Bit of a fidget physically and sometimes professionally.6

My missus comments that he has his nails taped up, as he chews them through matches (pretty gross) can he rein it in a bit, and still be successful?1
-
NJ has definitely been tapped up by Cardiff in my opinion - however, he's saying that look, i'm here, i'm doing everything i can to get results, i'm not trying to get sacked so please just back off and let me get on with it. It's as simple as that to me.0

Not even close to what Ted Lasso had to put up with.4

"It's football. Pay me money, Can say what I f******g like" You'll hear them chirp
Remind me again what other working environment in the UK would any sort of vocal abuse be allowed let alone the kind of vitriol that is served up week after week to football players and managers?
The bloke is there to do a job. Having some buffoon wallowing obscenities at you the whole time you're trying to do it must make it almost impossible.
I get it's hard to police a whole stadium but there's no reason a couple of security guards can't be stationed next to every dugout who can turf out these clowns when they over step the mark.
Times have changed. It's not on.I’d have thought that generally peer pressure from fellow supporters keeps it in check / within normal boundaries in the context of a football atmosphere. I assume the seats near our dugouts are mostly long term season ticket holders. When was the last time you saw that being effective at a match?2 -
The blokes a nervous wreck. We're either a few games away from a complete breakdown or a messiah complex7
-
All this bloody analysis. Why don't we just let him get on with his job.10

Mendonca In Asdas said:Goodness knows the age of the fan giving out the abuse, and whether he was around.
But I guess he wouldn’t have been to happy when Curbs was in charge, (imo our greatest ever manager in living history) set a premier league record at the time by losing 8 consecutive matches in a row, I reckon he’d self combust!
The fan I meant, not Curbs.

I don't care how mad he is, if he gets us promoted he's a good enough manager in my book.4
