  • Just feels like another midtable forgettable season is on the cards. No real creativity , don't rate Allan Campbell or Anderson in those further forward midfield roles - would be probably looking to start TC and Berry there on Saturday. Confused as to where Dan Potts is? Hasn't been mentioned he's injured and surely he's an upgrade on Gillesphey who if he's the best technical player at the club I wonder what on earth he does in training that he can't produce in a game.

A better side would have had that game out of sight before we could come back. The only amusing thing tonight was knowing Barnsley's keeper cost Chelsea £12m.... He looked very very shaky.
  • The ridiculous thing is that at 90+3 we were 5th in this hellhole league

Subs made a difference tonight, Berry is our only central midfielder remotely capable at this level and whether he persists with some of those he keeps picking or not I’m afraid to say Dobson will tear us a new one on Saturday, people genuinely believe Coventry was a better option 😂

    Roll on Saturday
    Yes, let's see shall we

With manager Nathan Jones serving a touchline ban and forced to watch from the stands, Charlton arrived in Yorkshire looking to build some momentum. Charlton started brightly, with MIles Leaburn making his first start of the season, but it was Barnsley who came closest, striking the woodwork and forcing a clearance from off of the line. Charlton had some nice passages of play going forward and had their own chances, but it was the home side that opened the scoring, perhaps against the run of play, on thirty-four minutes.

The second half was much the same as the first. Both times probed back and forth against the backdrop of a subdued audience of about twelve thousand. Some substitutions were made for both sides, including Luke Berry who came on after sixty-two minutes and scored on seventy-seven minutes to bring Charlton level. At that point, there wasn’t much quality on display as the two teams largely cancelled each other out.

All of the decisive action was confided to the final minutes of the match. A mix up at the back for Barnsley in added time gave Charlton the opportunity to pull ahead when Tyreece Campbell wafted a cross into the centre of the box and their keeper fumbled his punch to gift Luke Berry his second goal. Unfortunately, just two minutes later Barnsley found a leveler through Watters stabbing home from within the box.

This team isn’t good enough but for mid table obscurity. Continuing the trend of last season, we’re mostly only able to draw games we should be winning. There are at least a couple of missing pieces of real quality needed to get us into the upper echelons. It’s set to be a frustrating season again.

    Barnsley 2 Charlton 2

    Over to you.
Fully agree. Mid table (at best) on this showing. Very much hope I'm proved wrong.
  • After 12 games I can see what our best back 4 is. But I cannot see what our best midfield is or the best pairing of our 7 strikers.
And I don't think NJ does either.
Oh and the goalies are not good enough either.
  • I'll say it. Small to me is a better bet than Edwards. He made a big difference when he came on. In fact the three players who made a difference, Small, Campbell and Berry we couldn't give player marks to. The rest have to take a look at themselves. They have shown at home that they can pass the ball, they can tackle, they can out work teams so why are they so tepid away?
  • A win would of papered over the cracks, no decent cover when injuries happen and some players simply not good enough.

Whilst its true Jones has only had one window we need some better quality.

I never realised it was 1 win in 6 which makes tonight even more annoying.

Mid table all night long at this rate.

Yep. It's all about consistently winning. Not happening. So much for promotion.

I have to be honest and say that I need convincing we can challenge. Had we won today, I would need the same level of convincing. I hope Nathan Jones comes out and says that performance wasn't good enough. We deserved a point as much as Stockport deserved one of Saturday.

  • Like others have said, we didn't deserve to win but so disappointing to concede having got the second goal. Poor game management. Gillesphey was well thought of at Plymouth, he looks a liability for us. Going to miss Jones if he is out for some time. Just don't feel this team is good enough for challenging play offs this season.
  • Two points cheaply given away. Promotion on this form?
  • What’s happened to Edward’s since he’s injury.

Deserved to win against Stockport. Deserved to lose against Barnsley, so it’s evened out.
But my god we’re awful to watch.
Anderson and Coventry are headless chickens and MG is the very definition of Bambi on ice.
Perhaps we’d make a better petting zoo.
Might not be such a loss-making business either.
Need to work through the numbers but it’s doable, I think.
I don’t see the point in carrying on with the football. We’re just not cut out for it.
  • Why does he play Allan Campbell?? He offers fewer challenges than Johnny Williams and contributes zilch!
Thought NJ made the wrong call to keep this guy on, and pick him ahead of Doherty or Berry.
  • The ultimate joyless club offered the briefest glimpse of surprise enjoyment before immediately slapping itself round the chops and putting a swift end to all that nonsense.
I would say Bradford are just ahead of us in terms of being joyless. Just!

Small and Berry are eligible for marks

Edwards is a solid 6/7 out of 10. Small is usually either an 8 or a 4. I can see why Jones prefers the stability

6th biggest budget in the league, you wouldn’t think it. The summer recruitment has been largely a flop, a very lopsided squad made worse with NJ’s erratic team selection, and if you decide to sell the leagues best striker make sure the replacement has potential, and not Ahadme who looks like he’s never played football before. Good grief, there’s got to be something rotten at the club if they think he’s the future. Just praying he stays injured.
That's the worry for me. Jones had full control this summer and he's assembled such a  unbalanced squad. Can't even tell what system he would want to play if everyone was fit.

Small and Ramsay are stronger than their opponents. They are faster than their opponents. This benefits us defensively and offensively. Being able to start both is the way to go at this level but with Ramsay out we need those attributes from somewhere. I hope Jones doesn't think Watson not being the worst player on the pitch means he should start on Saturday. It could be ugly if he does. Not a lot of choice but REG a better bet at home.

This observation completely ripped off from me, about 2 weeks ago :p

It was true 2 weeks ago and true today. You can't rip off the truth.
  • Wrexham is the one scalp Jones wants above all others. We'll raise our game - as per Bolton and Birmingham - before the drab mediocrity returns.
  • It's quite simple. We talk about standards but not enough of these players are competent enough to hit those standards consistently resulting in mixed results which in turn results in a middling season.

Out of that starting 11 only Alex Mitchell and Matty Godden can be reasonably pleased with themselves

We aren’t in an injury crisis. Okay jones has missed the last 2 matches and Ramsay got injured on Saturday, but it is very rare to have ever present players , almost everyone misses several games a season. The majority of the squad is fit and available and those 2 were both fit and played in all 3 of the dire consecutive defeats. So he really had no excuse.

It feels exactly like most previous seasons, he’s chucked together a load of random players with very little strategy or meaningful system (other than defend and hope the oppo gift us the odd goal).

I thought Mitchell's distribution was terrible and Godden didn't have too much to be pleased about IMO. Mitchell defends well though to be fair.
