Drinking in the stands- could it catch on?

  • Would lean towards no as well.

Is that because you are already drunk?

Weirdly me and my bro were talking bout this a few weeks ago. Let's be honest, there's no way we can be trusted to drink in our seats during the game. It would be carnage. And for all those saying "they do it in Holland/Germany" just have a look online at some of the aggro that goes on in those countries both in and outside of the grounds!
Well, there's no way you two can be trusted to drink in your seats , that's for sure!
    You have a point haha!

Carnage? I don’t think so, policing inside grounds in this country is too good any little incidents would be dealt with/ bans,  In this day & age I don’t think having a drink would would be too much of an issue, things/attitudes have changed since 80’s.
Maybe mate, but I really don't think it would work for the men's game. I can see the trial being successful for the women and maybe they'll trial it at a few mens games soon. Leeds, Stoke, Wolves, Birmingham maybe as a start 😏
  • I would bring it back but limit the beer to Bud Light or Fosters. It will be hard getting pissed and if you do manage it, you will have contributed a lot of money to the club.

You appear to be mixing up beer and Bud Light & Fosters?
Not really, if you want to allow drinking in the stands it is a good option to use 'beers' that solve the problem the ban was brought in for.

Why was the ban brought in in the first place? To stop people getting pissed & fighting? Surely if people are getting smashed to the point of agro it’s due to them drinking long before they get into the stadium?

I don’t massively care either way, you only have to wait 45 mins at most for a pint as it is but I’d probably allow it. Close the kiosks from kick off to 40th minute and then close them from the 50th minute until full time to stop people getting up and down during the match.

Away games where you can’t get a drink at all because of the “in view of the pitch” rule are rubbish though (and must cost the home team a fortune).
  • In many other countries you can have a drink during the game, can it be used as an experiment for one season?

I honestly think it would be fine at 99% of matches. Obviously Cardiff v Swansea, Liverpool v United etc (+ every Millwall match, including under 11’s games) would probably need to be dry, but banning it at all games seems silly.

I realise you get a different fan at non-league but I have never seen a fist thrown and you can drink throughout the game.

Can't see why you cant't last the eternity of 37 minutes between sitting in your seats and leaving before half time to get a beer in the intervall.
  • Small non league grounds, like Dulwich, are completely different as you can wander to and from the beer vendors without affecting anyone else. Indeed an empty big terrace like our former big side would be fine too.

By contrast it would be really annoying for other people if you have groups of people leaving and returning to seated areas with beers, spilling them everywhere as they squeeze through.

I love a beer at cricket, but when you have a big drinking group next to you, the endless interruptions as people go to and from the bar do become annoying after a while.

So serve beer up until kick off and allow people to take their drinks to their seat with them. Then close the kiosks until the 40th minute.

Would answer both these questions whilst still treating people like adults.

or just exercise adult self control and restraint for 45 minutes.

I can - I go to football now and don’t drink during the match. But it’s not that people have to drink during the match, it’s that they want to. You don’t have to go to football at all in the first place, you go because you want to. Life would be incredibly dull if you only did the things you had to.

It's a no from solely because I don't fancy getting covered in beer when a goal goes in. Anyone who thinks people won't be launching pints is kidding themselves imo
I’d be fuming if beer was launched over my Stone Island and Burberry clobber.

The rule is from the National League to the Premier League.
Teams below this do not generate the same attendances (the rational behind it) as these leagues so do not have the same capacities.

    I am aware of that.

This. I wanna stay clean and not sticky!
  • Change all the seats to ones with cup holders in bigger grounds?
    Can’t see it.
Having said that it’s ok in Non League so sitting at Southport in August in NLN works ok. Away at Rotherham in January not so sure. Rather drink in the pub.
  • Think it could probably work at home games but I can't be arsed to have a 15 year old lob a pint over me when we equalise away at Wycombe
  • Ok, so it seems a consensus that we are happy not to drink in the stands as we are confident we will be getting wet with beer at some point if we do. It probably highlights what a load of oldies we are, but I'd rather not drink than be soaked with somebody's Grolsch! And given the cost of it, I am not minded to throw it away either.
  • I'd be fine with it on one condition.
Anyone caught throwing his or her pint over everyone is given a ten game ban.
  • don't ever see it happening here (certainly for Men's professional football) - personally I wouldn't be in favour of it either, as others have mentioned, lobbed pints / constant up and down to let people through carrying pints.

Now I love a beer, but I'm quite happy before and after with a pint at HT
  • Don't think the beer chucking thing would happen and if it did it wouldn't be for long. There are ways around the up and down nature too, I'd be in favour but understand the concerns
  • Happy for it not to happen - but could we get rid of the farce that means the blinds are pulled sown in Crossbars because "you cant drink in sight of the pitch".

I've watched plenty of football in other countries where you can drink in the stands, and I've yet to see people throwing beer. Given the cost of a pint in London these days, you'd be mad to do so! Bigger danger for me would be falling asleep when we're shit. If I've had 4-5 beers, it's a dire 0-0 against Shrewsbury Town, and there's 70 mins on the clock, the eyelids will be very heavy indeed.
  • And a white wine when watching the ladies
