RIP John Prescott

He was once quoted as saying that, after fifty years in politics, when he died, the only headlines will be about a punch he threw.  I wonder if Lifers have any more memories of this political behemoth..?

He could take an egg or two and he had an affair with his secretary. RIP.
  • I doubt we’ll see the like again. RIP John

Wonderful powerful politician who makes this lot we have now on all sides look so amateurish.

Genuinely cared for the people he represented and made it from a poor background to fairly high office.

    RIP John.

RIP. If you could pick a politician you would like to have a drink with down the pub, he would be at the top of a lot of people's lists.
  • Bit of a big mouth and very arrogant, but I couldnt help liking and admiring him, especially when he gave that guy in the crowd a clump.R.I.P ,we could do with a few personalities like him around now.

Proper old school no bullshit politician, represented and articulated, in his own unique way, my political leanings and views. RIP John

  • RIP two jags. Had the guts to say it how it was even if you disagreed with him.

I wonder if he had planned his funeral (having two hearses show up would be a wonderful last laugh to have).

A conviction politician, who cut his cloth to achieve the possible, rather than hold out for the perfect.

Didn't always like him, but respected him.

    RIP.

He came from an era where politicians from both sides of the house would wipe the floor with the present incumbents.
    RIP.

I met him a few times and he was a complex character.

There is no doubt that he was integral to Blair in connecting him with the grass roots.
  • I will always remember him as someone who was always opposed to the House of Lords and then took the ermine himself.

The downing of a pint in 5 seconds during his 1994 leadership bid was the stuff of legends.

Just seen a video of Prescott and Jeremy Clarkson absolutely going at it about the m4 bus lane on top gear. Epic stuff. RIP

  • I had the pleasure of being on the opposite side of the negotiating table to him. I admired him as a man of humour and a passionate trade unionist who said it as he believed - RIP John

Met him at Kings Cross Station, whilst waiting for a train, lovely guy. He was standing near me, I turned round and recognised who he was. Smiled and nodded at him and he came over for a minute to chat. No idea why. It was soon after the Coalition got in and we talked briefly about Cameron etc - he wasn't impressed ;-) He didn't have to come over but he did. RIP

Well said Chips. John Prescott was a proper ‘man of the people’. RIP big man.
  • Great man, very regretful of his role in the Iraq War.

Aside from the punch, the Tories mocking his mispronunciation in the house will always stick with me.

There are so many career politicians these days. Prescott was one of the last Labour politicians that had a "real" job before he became a politician.  He was a flawed politician, two jags, affair, punch all if which would have got him crucified by social media today, instead he rode the storm and proved his worth to Labour and the country.

Labour used to be full of former workers / Union stalwarts sadly there are only a few that come up through this route .. Angela Rayner being one.

Sorry I've no room for hypocrisy.
