I will always remember him as someone who was always opposed to the House of Lords and then took the ermine himself.
    Not even an RIP
Sorry I've no room for hypocrisy.
Hypocrisy maybe but it's also the Governing system we have and the Tories have a natural majority in the Lords so to get legislation through, Labour want as many stalwarts in ermine as they can. The real issue is reform of the 2nd chamber.
  • Someone who I always felt was in politics to genuinely try to make things better, which we're sorely lacking these days.

    RIP.

Saw the news earlier. The speech at the party conference where he said sorry for his affair was very moving. You could see that he meant it.

A politician with honour. Not many of them left.

    RIP.

Far from a perfect person but he never really pretended otherwise unlike some of the more hypocritical politicians both then and now.

But he was genuinely for "the people" not his pocket and can't question his commitment.

He was once quoted as saying that, after fifty years in politics, when he died, the only headlines will be about a punch he threw.  I wonder if Lifers have any more memories of this political behemoth..?
He could take an egg or two and he had an affair with his secretary. RIP.
    Nessa from Gavin and Stacey
  • A man of his time. Doubt there'll be many more characters of his ilk in Parliament going forward. A sad day for the world when someone is pationate about politics (and women) has left the world.

Flawed he probably was, but a real person he definately was. Might have liked to have a joke, but was nobody's fool.

John didn't just make politics interesting, he made it believable!

A light in The House, had gone out for good.

    RIP

    Well said Golfie
  • RIP. Whilst probably being on the opposite side to most of his views, I'll always respect a politician driven by a genuine conviction.

As an aside, I note that one poster liked the "not even an RIP" post and LOL'd the "no room for hypocrisy" post.

A fine position to take and entirely appropriate. If you are going to post on a RIP thread, at least have the decency to say RIP.

If only they'd taken the same view on the Maggie Thatcher Died thread, when they made a point of not saying RIP...

(yes I do have too much time on my hands).

A sad day indeed. A conviction politician with 'warts n all', but despite having the piss taken out of him by the opposite benches, he ploughed on. A proper old school politician who I admired for his forthright speaking. Everyone will remember that 'punch', but he was far more than that. None, and I mean none, of today's nobody's in the HoC could hold a candle to him, they're all career politicians and namby pamby!
RIP John, thanks for just being you!

  • Probably the last of the old working class polititicans. Said it as he saw it. Yes he was flawed but who of us are not. Fought hard for his constituents and class. He will be sorely missed politics will be so much poorer without him. RIP John.

Sorry I've no room for hypocrisy.

  • RIP

    But ...

As someone who worked in the Dept for Environment and Transport in a reasonably senior role when John Prescott was the Secretary of State (and deputy Prime Minister) all I will say is that the public personna that many of you feel John Prescott showed is vastly different to the one many people who worked for him actually experienced. All I will say is that for anyone who wanted to get on a job in the Secretary of State's Private Office was highly sought after. Suffice to say here there wasn't a huge queue of candidates.

And I will leave it at that although I could say an awful lot more.

Sorry but why are you policing this thread? The original poster asked for lifers memories of the deceased. Starinnaddick gave theirs and chose not to give it a RIP. Get off yer high horse.

Many politicians I’ve actually despised but I wouldn’t take that to their grave or wish any of them anything other than peace.

    John Prescott, Blair's wingman

    Two-jabs John when egged on

as the bruiser and so blunt when on song

The Cabin steward who went on to serve Labour

being Deputy PM he would rattle his Sabre

The conduit between Blair and Brown

John, the hard-nut who wore a he-man's frown

He was loyal to Labour more than his wife

an affair with his secretary caused some strife

But he cared deeply about the land and sea

Al Gore and John at Kyoto tried to be toxic free

The old labour working man who simply knew

that he had to be the cement between old and new

Born in Wales but made in the city of Hull

The union, titan MP and Lord was never dull.

    RIP John Prescott

I can’t actually think of one thing he stood for politically that I agreed with. However I always respected him as I believed he was standing up for his beliefs. I can’t think of any politician today that I think that about.

    RIP

Hardly an aside. If you want to take the high ground, probably best to leave it after “conviction”.

    RIP John Prescott.

Not somebody I agreed with much but could respect him even if holding differing opinions from him. Anthony Wedgwood Benn was another from John Prescott's side of the fence.

Absolutely an aside, and not taking “the high ground”. But apart from that, spot on.

My partner worked for the Labour Party many years ago for a high ranking MP.
She told me this morning on hearing the news he had passed that she was warned at conference once to keep away from him as he was “handsy”
Her words, not mine, she found him very unpleasant

It seems that being an MP turns people into a nonce. The ratio of noncey behaviour must be hugely greater than any other profession.

Come on, there is something inherently wrong with you to want to do the job in the first place.  They are at least narcissists and certainly would not survive 6 months in a proper job!

Sweeping generalisation of course, but i feel i need to put it out there...

surely there are community mp’s that have no interest in the front bench. Calling anyone who’s an MP a narcissist is a stretch. You can’t be that cynical soapy 😘
