  • Politician for all the right reasons. Definitely a man of the people. RIP
  • I met him several times. He had time for everyone (including Tories), a lot of dry humour and could be self deprecating. Flawed yes (aren’t they all) but a very decent bloke. My overriding memory is that it was almost impossible to have a conversation with as it was like stream of consciousness on his part! RIP
Old-school politicians like Prescott absolutely made time for those on their opposition - they had the decency to disagree well but to work alongside things of common interest. Politics is so partisan now and full of petty hatred’s; would be nice to have our MPs being genuinely kind to one another.
The punch of course sticks in the memory - but for me I’ll remember Prescott standing up for Blair at Conference. He may not have entirely agreed with Blair but knew what the plans and policies he had would achieve so backed him to the hilt and won over the left of the Party. So much good stuff was done post ‘97.

I think the nature of press reporting and the need to secure short term political wins at the oppositions expense to win the media war, especially at front bench level, masks the enormous amount of cross party collaboration and engagement that happens.
